Where G13 comes from

G13 is best known for its legend. The story says that in the 1970s or 1980s a US government research program collected the strongest cannabis it could find, bred a super indica numbered G13, and that a single cutting was smuggled out by a worker. Other versions claim the name means Greenhouse 13, or that the G stands for Government. None of these accounts has ever been verified, and there is no documented record of a plant called G13 in any official program.

Growing G13 in Canada

Indoors

G13 is an easy plant for a tent. A four week veg and a flip at 40 to 50 cm finish at 80 to 120 cm after a stretch of about 1.3 to 1.5 times. It feeds moderately to heavily and handles strong nutrients well, especially in the first four weeks of flower. Keep day temperatures at 21 to 26 degrees and humidity under 45% from week five, because the tapered colas are dense at the base. Most plants are ready in 56 to 63 days, and a few take a week longer.

Outdoors, by region

Afghan genetics give G13 good tolerance for cool nights, which makes it one of the more reliable indicas for Canadian gardens. In BC, southern Ontario and Quebec it finishes from late September to the first days of October with a late May planting. On the Prairies, including southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, start seeds indoors in mid April and transplant in late May; a well-established plant usually finishes in the last week of September, before the hard frosts. In Northern Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, a greenhouse or a sunny, sheltered wall helps extend the season. The dense buds still need protection from long stretches of autumn rain.

Height and training

G13 grows as a short, bushy plant with a main cola and strong side branches. Topping once and spreading the branches with low stress training produces an even canopy of six to ten tops. The plant responds well to a sea of green approach as well: grow several small plants, skip topping, and flip early. Remove the lowest shoots at the flip so energy goes to the upper buds.

Flowering and harvest cues

Pistils darken and calyxes swell from around day 50. Harvest when most trichomes are cloudy with 10% to 20% amber for a heavy, relaxing result, usually between day 58 and day 65. Hang the branches for 10 to 14 days in a room held near 60% humidity. The pine and sweet notes become clearer after two weeks of curing.

G13 yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, a trained canopy gives 300 to 450 g/m², and plants given a longer veg reach the higher end. Outdoors, a plant in a 50 to 80 litre pot or in the ground produces 400 to 700 g in a good season. G13 is not the heaviest yielder, but its buds are dense and lose little weight in drying, and the thick resin makes it a good choice for dry sift and hash.
