Where Ghost Train Haze comes from
Ghost Train Haze strain was bred in Colorado in the early 2010s from two strong parents. Ghost OG, a well regarded OG Kush selection, brings resin, structure and a little lemon fuel. Neville’s Wreck, a cross of Neville’s Haze and Trainwreck, brings the tall frame, the soaring haze effect and the sour, floral nose. The result leans heavily sativa, at roughly 80/20, and grows like a haze with more weight in the buds than most.
The name combines both sides: Ghost from Ghost OG, Train from Trainwreck, and Haze from Neville’s Haze. It also fits the finished flowers, which are so heavily frosted they look white. Ghost Train Haze became famous fast. A national cannabis magazine listed it as the most potent strain in the world in 2012, and it went on to place in Cannabis Cup sativa categories in 2013 and 2014. Several seed lines now carry the name, including numbered selections such as #1, and their effects and flavour are very similar.
Ghost Train Haze strain effects and experience
Ghost Train Haze lives up to its reputation. The effect starts within minutes as a rush of euphoria and mental energy, with bright, busy thoughts, a talkative mood and a strong urge to get moving. For experienced sativa fans it is a long, productive ride of three hours or more, with only a mild body ease at the very end.
THC usually tests between 18% and 27%, and some cuts have been reported above that. This is not a strain for beginners or for low tolerance: a heavy dose can feel racy, scattered or anxious, and the clear head can become an overactive one. Take a single small puff, wait twenty minutes, and keep it for mornings and early afternoons. Dry mouth and dry eyes are common.
Ghost Train Haze flavour, aroma and appearance
The aroma is sour lemon and grapefruit over sweet flowers, with fresh pine, a little earthy spice and a faint OG fuel underneath. Breaking a bud releases a sharper, almost cleaning-product citrus that haze lovers will recognise. The smoke tastes of lemon and pine on the inhale and turns floral and peppery on the exhale. Terpinolene and myrcene are usually the leading terpenes, with caryophyllene, limonene and pinene in support.
The buds are long and spear shaped, lime green with bright orange pistils, and covered in a dense layer of milky trichomes. In good light they look almost silver. The calyxes stack loosely along the stem in the haze style, which helps airflow late in bloom.
Growing Ghost Train Haze in Canada
Indoors
Ghost Train Haze is best grown indoors in Canada, and it needs a plan for height. Expect a stretch of two to three times after the flip, so veg for only two weeks or flip at about 30 cm in a tent under two metres. Keep the room at 22 to 27 degrees by day, with nights no more than 5 degrees cooler. It feeds moderately: give a steady dose of nitrogen in veg, then back off and raise phosphorus and potassium from week three of bloom. Hold humidity at 50% in early flower and drop to 40% to 45% for the last three weeks. Most plants finish between day 63 and day 77, and some sativa-leaning phenotypes need the full eleven weeks.
Outdoors, by region
Its mid to late October finish limits Ghost Train Haze outdoors to the longest Canadian seasons. On the BC coast, from Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula to the Lower Mainland, plant out in late May in full sun and plan to harvest in the second half of October under a rain cover. Southern Ontario is the other option, especially Essex and Kent counties and the Niagara Peninsula, where a warm autumn can carry it to the third week of October. Everywhere else, including the Prairies, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, early frosts usually arrive before the buds are ripe, so grow it indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Our guide to growing cannabis indoors in Canada covers the setup.
Height and training
Train early and often. Top twice, then spread the branches across a screen of green net before the flip, and keep tucking new growth under the net through the first three weeks of flower. Supercrop any top that runs ahead of the rest. A well trained plant forms a flat canopy of ten to sixteen colas, which yields more and keeps the lights at a safe distance. Our low stress training guide walks through the method.
Flowering and harvest cues
Haze pistils can keep pushing out new white hairs late in bloom, so judge ripeness by trichomes. From about day 60, check the heads with a loupe and harvest when most are cloudy with 5% to 10% amber for the full energetic effect. Dry for 10 to 14 days at about 60% humidity and cure for at least three weeks; the citrus sharpens and the floral notes come forward in the jar.
Ghost Train Haze yield indoors and outdoors
A screened indoor canopy gives 400 to 600 g/m², and long, well trained colas can push past that in a tuned room. Outdoors on the coast or in southern Ontario, a plant with a full season and a good autumn returns 500 to 800 g of dried flower. The heavy frost makes the trim worth keeping for hash or edibles.
Who Ghost Train Haze is for, and who should pick something else
Grow Ghost Train Haze seeds if you are an experienced sativa smoker who wants maximum potency and a long, energetic effect, if you love lemon and haze flavours, and if you have a tall tent or a long coastal season. It suits growers who have already handled a stretchy plant.
Pick something else for a first grow, a short tent or a Prairie garden, or if strong sativas make you uneasy. For a classic haze that is easier to manage, Super Silver Haze gives similar citrus and spice with a slightly more relaxed finish.
How Ghost Train Haze compares
Trainwreck is the grandparent behind the sour, peppery rush, with a shorter bloom. Neville’s Haze shows where the long flowering time and the soaring effect come from, in a purer and slower form. Amnesia Haze has a similar lemon and earth profile and a slightly gentler kick. Browse more daytime strains in our sativa feminized seeds.
Frequently asked questions about Ghost Train Haze
Is Ghost Train Haze sativa or indica?
Ghost Train Haze is a sativa dominant hybrid, about 80% sativa and 20% indica. The effect is energetic, euphoric and mentally busy, with only a mild body ease at the end, so it suits the daytime.
How strong is Ghost Train Haze?
Ghost Train Haze is very strong, usually testing 18% to 27% THC, and some cuts have been reported higher. A national cannabis magazine named it the most potent strain in the world in 2012, so new users should start with a very small amount.
What is Ghost Train Haze a cross of?
Ghost Train Haze is a cross of Ghost OG and Neville’s Wreck. Neville’s Wreck is itself Neville’s Haze crossed with Trainwreck, which is where the strain gets its name and its sour citrus haze character.
How tall does Ghost Train Haze grow?
Ghost Train Haze usually grows 100 to 200 cm indoors and can reach about 250 cm outdoors. It stretches two to three times after the flip, so topping, a screen of green net and an early switch to 12/12 are the best ways to keep it under control.
