Where Black Gorilla comes from
Black Gorilla is a cross of Gorilla Glue #4, the resin-heavy Chem and Diesel hybrid, and Bright Berry, a fruity, indica leaning plant chosen to add sweetness and a more compact frame. It appeared in the late 2010s as breeders looked for ways to keep GG4’s potency and frost while taming its stretch and its sharp, fuel-heavy flavour.
The “Black” in the name comes from the colour. In a cool finish, the calyxes and sugar leaves darken to a deep forest green, and some phenotypes turn purple to almost black, which makes the white trichomes stand out even more. It is not related to Black Domina or other “Black” strains; the name describes the look, not a parent.
The plant leans indica, around 70/30, with broader leaves and denser buds than its GG4 parent, although it keeps enough of that vigour to grow tall outdoors.
Black Gorilla strain effects and experience
Black Gorilla opens with a subtle buzz in the head that grows into a warm, joyful mood within ten to fifteen minutes. That first stage can feel surprisingly bright for an indica, and it is a nice time for music or a long conversation.
Then the body relaxation rolls in and keeps building. Limbs loosen, thoughts slow down and by the end of the session many people are ready to sleep. With THC between 24% and 30%, it is a strong strain, and newcomers should take very little, because too much can bring on anxiety or a racing heart. Keep it for the last hours of the day.
Black Gorilla flavour, aroma and appearance
The aroma blends sweet and sharp: ripe dark berries and chocolate first, then pine, earth and a clear line of diesel from the Gorilla Glue side. Grinding brings out a herbal, spicy note. The smoke is thick and sticky, with berry and cocoa on the inhale and gas, pine and a little pepper on the exhale. Caryophyllene and myrcene lead the terpene profile, with limonene lifting the fruit.
The buds are dense and chunky, deep green with purple to near-black patches in cool weather, bright orange pistils and a heavy coat of resin that leaves fingers and scissors sticky, just like its parent.
Growing Black Gorilla in Canada
Indoors
Black Gorilla stretches less than GG4 but still grows with vigour, often 1.5 to 1.75 times after the flip. Veg for four weeks and flip at 45 to 50 cm to finish between 90 and 150 cm. It takes a moderate to strong feed in mid flower. Keep days at 21 to 27 degrees and let nights fall 5 to 8 degrees in the final fortnight to bring out the dark colour. The buds are very dense, so from week five hold humidity at 40% to 45% and keep air moving across the canopy. Our guide to managing humidity for cannabis sets out the numbers week by week. Expect the harvest window to open somewhere between day 56 and day 63.
Outdoors, by region
An 8 to 9 week bloom lets Black Gorilla finish across most of southern Canada. In the Okanagan, the Kootenays and on the dry side of Vancouver Island, plant out in late May and harvest in the last week of September. On the Lower Mainland and in southern Ontario, expect early October; give plants room and remove interior leaves to speed drying after rain. On the Prairies, germinate indoors in April and transplant in late May for a harvest by the end of September, when the cold nights bring out the dark tones. In the Maritimes, a sunny site with good drainage and a rain cover gives the best chance.
Height and training
Top once or twice and spread the branches under a net; Black Gorilla responds well to a screen of green and builds eight to twelve heavy colas. Stake the tallest branches outdoors, since the dense buds get heavy in the last three weeks. Clear the lower third at the flip.
Flowering and harvest cues
Dark colour appears around week six and does not mean the plant is ready. Start checking trichomes from day 55 and harvest when most are cloudy with 15% to 20% amber for the full, sleepy effect. Dry for 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity, then cure for at least three weeks; the berry and chocolate notes come forward with time.
Black Gorilla yield indoors and outdoors
A trained indoor canopy returns 450 to 600 g/m² of heavy, dense buds. Outdoors, a full-season plant gives 500 to 700 g dried in a warm year. Resin output is high, inherited from GG4, so the smaller buds and trim are worth saving for hash or rosin.
Who Black Gorilla is for, and who should pick something else
Grow Black Gorilla if you like the potency and frost of Gorilla Glue #4 but want a sweeter flavour, a more compact indoor plant and a heavier, sleepier finish. It also suits growers who enjoy dark, dramatic buds.
Pick something else if you are new to strong strains, want a daytime effect, or prefer the sharp pine and diesel of the original, where Gorilla Glue #4 itself is the better choice.
How Black Gorilla compares
Gorilla Glue #4, its parent, is taller, more balanced and sharper in flavour, with even more resin. Alien Gorilla Glue is another GG4 relative with Afghan genetics, bred for a tougher, more mould resistant plant. Gorilla Punch blends the Glue with grape and dessert sweetness for a lighter effect. Black Domina shares the dark look and heavy effect through entirely different Afghan genetics. Browse more heavy night-time strains in our indica feminized seeds.
Frequently asked questions about Black Gorilla
Is Black Gorilla indica or sativa?
Black Gorilla is an indica dominant hybrid, about 70% indica and 30% sativa. It begins with a light, joyful head buzz and then turns into a deep body relaxation that often leads to sleep. The plant is more compact and bushier than its Gorilla Glue #4 parent.
What strains make Black Gorilla?
Black Gorilla is a cross of Bright Berry and Gorilla Glue #4. GG4 brings the potency, resin and diesel, while Bright Berry adds a sweeter berry flavour, a denser structure and a stronger indica lean. The name refers to the dark colour of the buds.
How strong is Black Gorilla strain?
Black Gorilla usually tests between 24% and 30% THC, with CBD under 1%. It is a strong strain that suits experienced users. People new to high THC should take very little, since too much can feel overwhelming.
What does Black Gorilla taste like?
Black Gorilla tastes like dark berries and chocolate on the inhale, with pine, diesel and a little pepper on the exhale. Caryophyllene and myrcene lead the terpene profile. A slow dry and a cure of three weeks or more bring out the berry and cocoa notes.
Why Black Gorilla suits growers who found Gorilla Glue #4 too tall for their tent
GG4 is a great plant, but its stretch catches out many indoor growers. Black Gorilla keeps most of the potency and frost on a shorter, bushier frame, which is why we suggest it for tents under 180 cm. The seeds ship from our Vancouver, BC seed bank in plain packaging and arrive anywhere in Canada in 3 to 7 business days. Shipping is free on orders over $200, and $30 adds tracking, insurance and one free reshipment for a lost parcel.
Every batch has been viability tested in Vancouver since 2009, and the 80% germination guarantee covers Black Gorilla when you follow the cup of water and paper towel method in our germination guide. The 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free with any strain of the same size, and orders over $420 come with 10 extra seeds.
At checkout you can use Interac e-Transfer, credit card, Bitcoin or cash, and our Vancouver team answers phone calls, emails, WhatsApp and live chat on every day of the week.
