Super Silver Haze strain folds Skunk #1 and Northern Lights into a Haze line, the classic recipe for making a long-flowering sativa behave: Skunk brings vigour and weight, Northern Lights shortens the flowering window and adds resin, and Haze supplies the spice, the incense and the bright cerebral effect it is built around.
It arrived in the mid nineties and took first place at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1997, 1998 and 1999, the only strain to manage three consecutive wins. That run is why Super Silver Haze seeds still sell steadily against strains testing ten points higher.
The lift is fast and unmistakably sativa. Within a few minutes there is a clear-headed rush of energy and a pull toward doing something: talking, working, getting outside. It holds that way for an hour or more, and the Northern Lights in its background keeps away the jittery edge that pure haze lines can bring.
The finish is where the indica side shows up, easing into something calm and comfortable rather than sedating. At 18% to 23% THC it is moderate by current standards, and for daytime use that is the point: the clarity lasts longer than the intensity.
The nose is spicy and sharp: citrus and lemon peel over an incense and sandalwood base, with a skunky undertone that gives away the Skunk descent. Flowering runs 63 to 77 days depending on phenotype, and the last fortnight adds real weight to the long colas. Keep humidity near 45% at the end; the airy structure resists rot better than dense strains, but the colas are long enough to hold moisture in the middle.
A mid to late October finish makes this a coastal BC plant outdoors. On the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, start indoors in late March, plant out in late May and harvest through the second half of October with a rain cover ready. Southern Ontario needs a greenhouse or a light deprivation tarp pulled in early August to bring flowering forward into late September. In Quebec, on the Prairies and in the Atlantic provinces there is no realistic outdoor window, and this is an indoor plant. Top twice and run a screen, or accept one very tall central cola and weak lower branches. Tie the branches out in the first fortnight of flower while they still bend. The long, whip-like side branches need a net or stakes once the colas fill out, because they arch over under the weight. Strip the lowest quarter at the flip.
Patience is the whole skill with this one. The pistils go orange well before the plant is finished, and cutting at day 60 costs both weight and the sweet, spicy top notes. Check trichomes from day 63 and harvest at mostly cloudy with a few amber, which on most phenotypes falls between day 66 and day 77. Dry cool and slow, 16 to 18 degrees for 12 to 14 days, because the citrus and incense terpenes are the first thing a warm dry room destroys, then cure for at least three weeks.
Indoors, a screened canopy given the full flowering window returns 500 to 700 g/m², high for a sativa and the reason this strain broke the old rule that haze lines could not produce. Outdoors on the BC coast a full-season plant in a 70 litre pot gives 600 to 900 g dried. The buds are airier than a modern hybrid, so the wet to dry loss is greater than you might expect, and the honest indoor figures come from growers who waited out the last fortnight.
Grow Super Silver Haze feminized seeds if you want a daytime strain with a classic haze flavour, if you have the ceiling height and the patience for an eleven week flower, or if you have been chasing potency numbers and want something that leaves you functional. It’s kind of difficult growth, I am not gonna lie, but it was well worth it in the end. I am brand new to MJ growing and I guess I didn’t know what I was getting myself into…that being said I got a pretty decent yield off this plant and it helps a lot with fatigue and stress and adds symptoms. I can focus for a LONG time once I smoke this weed, plus I love its sour earthy taste. Perfect for smoking at lunch if you can be discreet and hide the smell! I will recommend this strain to all my friends.
