Where Modified Grapes comes from

Modified Grapes is a cross of GMO, the Chemdawg and Girl Scout Cookies strain known for its garlic, mushroom and onion funk, and Purple Punch, the Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple dessert indica that tastes like grape candy. It appeared in California in the late 2010s and quickly built a following among people who wanted the depth of GMO with something sweet on top.

The name appears to be a play on its parents: GMO is short for genetically modified organism, and Purple Punch supplies the grapes. No breeder has published an official explanation, but the joke is hard to miss. The original release was not widely available as feminized seed, which is part of why the strain spread mainly through clones and why feminized versions are in demand.

Purple Punch also shortens the bloom. Where GMO often needs 9 to 10 weeks, Modified Grapes finishes in 8 to 9, which changes where it can be grown outdoors in Canada.

Modified Grapes strain effects and experience

The first half hour is warm and happy, with a gentle euphoria and an easy, talkative mood. Then the body effect takes over: heavy limbs, a strong urge to sit down and, for many people, sleep within two to three hours. It is an evening strain through and through.

At 22% to 28% THC it is potent, and the GMO side gives it staying power. Smaller amounts keep the happy, relaxed phase without the couch lock; larger ones go straight to the heavy end.

Modified Grapes flavour, aroma and appearance

The nose is a genuine collision. Sweet grape candy and berry arrive first, then garlic, diesel and a peppery, musky funk rise underneath. Some people describe it as overripe grapes on a garage floor, and they mean it as praise. The smoke is sweet grape and honey on the inhale with gas, spice and pine on the exhale. Caryophyllene is always prominent, with limonene and myrcene alongside.

The buds are dense, medium sized and chunky, olive to forest green marbled with lavender and deep purple, with orange-amber hairs and a heavy coat of frost. The purple is strongest when nights fall to 12 to 15 degrees in the last two weeks.

Growing Modified Grapes in Canada

Indoors

Modified Grapes grows as a medium, sturdy plant with more stretch than Purple Punch and less than GMO, usually 1.5 to 2 times after the flip. Veg for three to four weeks and flip at 45 cm to finish between 90 and 150 cm. It takes a moderate to heavy feed in mid flower. Keep days at 23 to 27 degrees and hold humidity at 40% to 45% from week six, because the buds are dense enough to hide rot. A 5 to 7 degree drop between day and night in the final fortnight brings out the lavender. Outdoors, by region

The 8 to 9 week finish opens up most of southern Canada. On Vancouver Island, in the Lower Mainland and in the Okanagan, plant out in late May for a harvest at the end of September. In southern Ontario, a late May transplant finishes in early October; give plants space, as the dense colas do not forgive a humid spell. On the Prairies, start indoors in early April and transplant in late May for a harvest in the last days of September, and keep frost cloth handy. Height and training

Top once or twice and use a net to spread the canopy; the GMO side can push a tall central stem if left untrained. Lollipop the lower branches at the flip and thin the inner fan leaves at week three of flower to keep air moving through the dense buds.

Flowering and harvest cues

Trichomes turn cloudy around day 55 to 60. Harvest at mostly cloudy with 10% to 15% amber for the full, heavy effect. Dry for 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity; the grape comes forward and the garlic softens over a cure of three weeks or more.

Modified Grapes yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, 450 to 600 g/m² is realistic from a trained canopy, and the buds are heavy for their size. Outdoors, a full-season plant gives 500 to 700 g dried. Resin production is high, which makes it popular with rosin pressers, and the terpene mix survives extraction well.
