Death Star Feminized at a glance: Death Star is an indica dominant Sensi Star x Sour Diesel hybrid that flowers in 8 to 9 weeks, tests 18% to 27% THC, stays 60 to 100 cm tall indoors and gives 400 to 500 g/m² of frosty, diesel-scented buds.
A Midwest legend from 2010, now a domestic parcel from British Columbia
Death Star became famous long before legal seed sales, passed between growers as a clone and later released as seed. You no longer need a friend with a mother plant. Our Death Star seeds are stored in Vancouver, BC, packed in plain, unbranded envelopes and delivered within Canada in 3 to 7 business days, from Whitehorse to St. John’s, without a border crossing. Each lot is germination tested before it leaves, the 80% germination guarantee applies to every pack, and 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free.
Where Death Star comes from
Death Star strain was bred in Ohio in the late 2000s by a small team of growers and broke out nationally when it landed on a major cannabis magazine cover in early 2010. The widely reported cross pairs Sensi Star, a dense, resinous indica known for its frost, with Sour Diesel, the East Coast fuel sativa. One account from the original team mentions East Coast Sour Diesel with Bubble Gum and G13 in the background, so you will see both versions online; the Sensi Star and Sour Diesel pedigree is the one most sources repeat.
The name is usually traced to a joke among the original growers and a friend’s suggestion, with an obvious nod to the space station in a certain film franchise. It stuck because the strain is famously powerful for its size. Death Star went on to parent a small family of its own, including Cherry, Lemon and Pink Death Star, which each add a fruit note to the same diesel base.
Death Star strain effects and experience
Death Star starts with a short, happy lift: a few minutes of giggles and easy conversation as the Sour Diesel side announces itself. Then the indica weight arrives. Limbs feel warm and slow, the eyelids grow heavy and the urge to move fades. Most people find it best after dinner, and by the end of a two to three hour session many are ready for bed.
Lab results for flower sold as Death Star range from the high teens to the mid twenties, and well grown seed plants can reach 27% THC. It is not the strongest strain in the catalogue, but it is efficient: the sedation comes on quickly. Start small, and expect dry mouth and red eyes; dizziness is occasionally reported at high doses.
Death Star flavour, aroma and appearance
This is a diesel strain first. Open the jar and sharp fuel hits immediately, followed by old-school skunk and a sour, earthy funk. Behind the gas sits a surprising sweetness, a little like lemon drops or bubble gum depending on the phenotype. The smoke is thick and fuel heavy, with citrus on the finish. Caryophyllene and myrcene usually lead the terpene profile, with limonene and humulene behind them.
The buds are dense, bright green and chunky, with flashes of purple in cooler rooms and a frost so heavy that the sugar leaves look dipped in salt. Orange pistils are short and tucked in close, and the overall look is compact and heavy rather than tall and airy.
Growing Death Star in Canada
Indoors
Death Star is one of the friendlier strains in the diesel family. The Sensi Star side keeps the plant short and stocky, so even a 120 cm tent has room to spare. Veg for three to four weeks and flip at 30 to 40 cm; expect a modest stretch to 60 to 100 cm. It accepts a medium feed without burning and tolerates a range of temperatures, though 21 to 26 degrees in the day is ideal. The smell is the biggest management job: from week three of flower it is strong enough to carry through a house, so a carbon filter is not optional. Our page on controlling cannabis odour covers filter sizing.
Outdoors, by region
An 8 to 9 week bloom puts Death Star’s outdoor finish in late September to early October, so it works across most of southern Canada. In BC’s Interior, the Kootenays and the Okanagan, plant out in late May and harvest before the late September frost risk. Southern Ontario and southern Quebec growers can expect a finish in the final week of September in a normal year. On the Prairies, start seeds indoors in April, harden off in late May and give the plant the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have; its short height is an advantage in Prairie wind. Coastal BC and Atlantic growers should prune for airflow, as the tight buds hold moisture after autumn rain.
Height and training
Because it stays short, Death Star does not need heavy training. A single topping at the fourth node and a few tie-downs give four to eight strong colas. In a sea of green setup, you can run it untopped and fit more plants per square metre. Clear the lowest growth before the flip to keep air moving under the canopy.
Flowering and harvest cues
Most plants are ready between day 56 and 63. Pistils turn amber and recede early, so judge by trichomes: cloudy with a sprinkle of amber for the classic balance, or 20% amber for a heavier, sleepier finish. Dry for 10 to 12 days at around 60% humidity and cure for two weeks; the sweet citrus note behind the diesel only comes through once the chlorophyll has cleared.
Death Star yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, a tidy Death Star canopy produces 400 to 500 g/m², which is generous for such a short plant. Outdoors, a plant in the ground or a 50 litre pot gives 350 to 500 g dried. The dense buds hold their weight after drying, and the heavy resin makes quality hash from the trim.
Who Death Star is for, and who should pick something else
Death Star feminized seeds suit growers with a small tent, people who want a classic diesel flavour without a tall sativa plant, and outdoor gardeners in most of southern Canada who need a finish before mid October. It is also a good second grow for anyone who wants potency without fussy feeding.
Pick something else if you want a lively daytime high or if odour is a deal-breaker in your home. A citrus sativa or a gentler fruit hybrid would suit those situations better.
How Death Star compares
Sour Diesel, the parent, is taller, slower and far more energetic, with a cleaner fuel nose and none of the couch effect. G13 brings the same heavy, old-school body feel with less diesel and more earth. CB Diesel keeps the fuel family flavour but lowers the THC and adds CBD for a lighter session. Among our indica feminized seeds, Death Star is the diesel option that still fits a small tent.
Frequently asked questions about Death Star
Is Death Star an indica or sativa?
Death Star is an indica dominant hybrid, roughly 75% indica and 25% sativa. The Sour Diesel parent gives a short, happy lift at the start, but the Sensi Star side quickly brings a heavy, relaxing body effect, so most people treat it as an evening strain.
What is Death Star strain a cross of?
Death Star is most often listed as Sensi Star crossed with Sour Diesel. Some accounts from its original Ohio growers mention East Coast Sour Diesel with Bubble Gum and G13 in the background, but the Sensi Star and Sour Diesel pedigree is the one most sources agree on.
How strong is Death Star strain?
Death Star usually tests between 18% and 27% THC, with CBD under 0.5%. That is strong without being extreme, but the sedation arrives quickly, so a small amount goes a long way. Newer users should start with one small draw.
Why is it called Death Star?
Death Star got its name from a joke among the growers who first bred it in Ohio, with an obvious nod to the giant space station from a famous film series. The name stuck because the strain packs a heavy punch for such a short plant.
