Pure Michigan Feminized at a glance: a 70/30 indica dominant hybrid that flowers in 8 to 9 weeks, tests 22% to 29% THC, yields 450 to 550 g/m² indoors, and produces thick, frosted buds with a vanilla, chocolate cookie and diesel aroma.
A Great Lakes strain, delivered across provinces instead of across a border
Pure Michigan comes from a region with humid summers and cool autumns much like southern Ontario’s, and that shows in how well it copes with a Great Lakes growing season. Canadian growers do not need to import it: our seeds are stocked in Vancouver, BC and travel by domestic mail in plain packaging, reaching Windsor, Toronto or Thunder Bay, and every other province, in 3 to 7 business days. Each batch is viability tested and backed by our 80% germination guarantee, and every 10 and 25 seed pack is buy one get one free.
Where Pure Michigan comes from
Pure Michigan was created in the American Midwest by crossing Oreoz, a Cookies and Cream and Secret Weapon hybrid famous for its chocolate and diesel nose, with Mendo Breath, a sweet, caramel-scented OG Kush Breath descendant known for heavy, calming effects. It borrowed its name from the state’s tourism slogan and became a signature strain of the Michigan market after legalization there, before spreading to menus across North America.
Both parents are indica leaning, and the offspring is solidly in that camp: squat, thick-stemmed and heavy with resin. It was selected in a climate with muggy Julys and chilly Octobers, so it has a practical toughness that some West Coast dessert strains lack.
Pure Michigan strain effects and experience
Pure Michigan eases in rather than hitting hard. The first few minutes bring a warm, contented mood and a quieter mind. Over the next half hour the body grows heavy and loose, tension drains out of the neck and back, and the pull toward the couch gets stronger. It is a nighttime strain for most people, and a large dose will end the evening early.
THC tests between 22% and 29%. The calm onset can make it seem milder than it is, so wait before reaching for a second round.
Pure Michigan flavour, aroma and appearance
The nose is a dessert with an engine running: sweet vanilla and milk chocolate cookie from Oreoz, caramel and a nutty sweetness from Mendo Breath, then diesel and damp earth underneath. The smoke is smooth, creamy and sweet, with a gassy, slightly skunky exhale. Caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene lead the terpenes, which fits the sweet but heavy character.
Buds are large, dense and slightly elongated, forest green with lavender and plum streaks when the temperature drops late in bloom. The trichome layer is thick and silvery, and the dark orange pistils are short. The dried flower holds together well and breaks down sticky.
Growing Pure Michigan in Canada
Indoors
Pure Michigan is one of the easier modern indicas to finish. Veg for four weeks, flip at 45 to 55 cm and expect a 1.4 to 1.7 times stretch to a final 90 to 130 cm. It is comfortable at 22 to 26 degrees and forgiving of small swings, and it handles higher humidity in veg better than many Cookies-line strains. Feed it moderately with a solid dose of calcium and magnesium. Flowering takes 56 to 63 days. From week six, the fat colas need 45% humidity or lower and a fan moving air through the canopy.
Outdoors, by region
Its home climate makes Pure Michigan a natural for Ontario. From Windsor and Sarnia through the Greater Toronto Area to the Ottawa Valley, plant out in late May once nights stay above 10 degrees, and harvest in the second half of September. The humidity of a Great Lakes August is less of a problem for this plant than for most dessert strains, though good spacing and a trimmed lower canopy still matter. In BC, it finishes comfortably in the Okanagan, the Fraser Valley and on Vancouver Island. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick growers can expect a harvest around the end of September. On the Prairies, start the seed indoors in April and plant out after the last frost; its short, sturdy frame is easy to cover on the first cold nights of September. Our best outdoor cannabis seeds for Canada page compares it with other strains that suit a short season.
Height and training
The plant grows a strong central cola with thick side branches that respond well to a single topping. After topping, bend the branches outward with ties over one to two weeks to even out the canopy, and put a trellis net in place at the flip to support heavy tops in week seven. Clear the lower third of small growth at day 21 of flower.
Flowering and harvest cues
The buds fatten noticeably after day 40, and the vanilla and chocolate get sweeter toward the end. Harvest when most trichomes are cloudy with 15% to 20% amber, usually around day 60 to 63, for the heaviest effect. Dry for 12 to 14 days at 18 degrees and 60% humidity, and cure for three weeks or longer; the diesel mellows and the dessert notes grow as it cures.
Pure Michigan yield indoors and outdoors
Expect 450 to 550 g/m² from a trained indoor canopy. Outdoors in southern Ontario or southern BC, a single plant in the ground or a 50 to 75 litre pot produces 450 to 650 g of dried flower, while April-started Prairie plants usually give 300 to 450 g. For planning how many plants to run for that kind of harvest, see our guide on how much cannabis one plant yields.
Who Pure Michigan is for, and who should pick something else
Choose Pure Michigan if you grow in Ontario or another humid, cool-autumn region, want a sturdy indica that tolerates a few mistakes, or want a sweet, heavy strain for the evening. It is a sensible second grow for someone moving on from a beginner strain.
Pick something else if you want a lively daytime high, where Jealousy is the social, energetic hybrid, or if the smell of gas is not for you.
How Pure Michigan compares
GMO shares the savoury, gassy depth but takes much longer to flower and runs heavier still. Kush Mints has similar cold tolerance and weight with mint and coffee instead of chocolate. Within our indica feminized seeds, Pure Michigan is the one we suggest to Ontario growers who want a modern flavour without a risky October finish.
Frequently asked questions about Pure Michigan
What is Pure Michigan strain?
Pure Michigan is an indica dominant hybrid of Oreoz and Mendo Breath, bred in the American Midwest. It tests 22% to 29% THC, smells of vanilla, chocolate cookie and diesel, and produces a calm, heavy effect best suited to the evening.
Does Pure Michigan grow well in Ontario?
Yes. It was selected in a Great Lakes climate with humid summers and cool autumns, much like southern Ontario, and it finishes in 8 to 9 weeks, usually in the second half of September. Good spacing and a trimmed lower canopy help with late summer humidity.
Is Pure Michigan indica or sativa?
Pure Michigan is indica dominant, around 70% indica and 30% sativa. Both parents lean indica, so the plant is short and sturdy and the effect is relaxing and heavy in the body rather than energizing.
How long does Pure Michigan take to flower?
It flowers in 8 to 9 weeks, or 56 to 63 days after the switch to 12/12. Outdoors in Canada that means a harvest in the second half of September across BC, Ontario and the Maritimes, and on the Prairies with an April indoor start.
