Where Kush Mints comes from

Kush Mints crosses Bubba Kush, the dense, chocolate-and-coffee indica that anchored West Coast menus in the 1990s, with Animal Mints, a resin-heavy descendant of Animal Cookies and a mint-scented Girl Scout Cookies line. It appeared around 2017, and its standout selection was later used as a parent in several of the strongest strains of the 2020s, including our Cap Junky.

The appeal is the blend of old structure and new resin. Bubba Kush contributes a short, sturdy frame and a forgiving nature; Animal Mints contributes frost, the mint note and the modern potency. The result grows like a kush and smokes like a new-school strain.

Effects and experience

Kush Mints is a wind-down strain. The first few minutes bring a mild, pleasant lift and a sense of the day letting go. Within half an hour the Bubba side is in charge: heavy eyelids, a warm, weighted body and a quiet mind that is happy to stay put. It lasts two to three hours and tends to end in sleep if taken late.

With 22% to 28% THC, a small amount goes a long way. It is a good match for the end of a long shift and a poor match for anything that requires getting off the couch.

Flavour, aroma and appearance

The aroma is cool and layered: fresh spearmint up front, then vanilla, dark roast coffee and the earthy, hashy base of Bubba Kush. Crushing a bud releases a hint of pine and pepper. The smoke is smooth and minty on the inhale with a creamy, coffee and cocoa exhale that lingers on the tongue. Limonene, caryophyllene and myrcene lead the terpene mix.

The buds are thick, rounded and very dense, lime to forest green with purple flecks in cooler rooms, and they are coated heavily enough to look silver from arm’s length. The plant itself is broad-leaved and stocky, the Bubba shape with more branches.

Growing Kush Mints in Canada

Indoors

This is a straightforward plant. Veg for four weeks, flip at 45 to 55 cm, and expect a mild 1.3 to 1.6 times stretch to a final 90 to 130 cm. It likes 22 to 26 degrees and copes with nights as cool as 15 degrees without stalling, which makes it a smart pick for a basement grow over a Canadian winter. Feed it moderately; the Bubba side drinks steadily and responds well to a slightly higher phosphorus and potassium ratio from week three of bloom. Outdoors, by region

With an 8 to 9 week bloom and cold tolerance from its kush parent, Kush Mints works outdoors across most of Canada. In BC and southern Ontario it is ready in the second half of September. Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia gardens usually harvest in the last week of September from a late May planting. On the Prairies, germinate in early April under lights, harden the plant off through May and plant out after the last frost; it generally finishes in late September, and its short frame is easy to cover on the first frosty nights. The main risk anywhere is a wet September, since the buds are tight, so keep a tarp or a cold frame handy.

Height and training

Kush Mints naturally grows as a broad, bushy plant, so a single topping and some low stress training are enough. Open the centre to let light into the middle branches, and take out the small growth on the lower third at the flip. Its short internodes stack bud sites close together, so a light defoliation at day 21 does more for airflow than for yield.

Flowering and harvest cues

The calyxes swell visibly from day 45, and the mint scent gets sharper as the plant nears ripeness. Harvest when trichomes are cloudy with 10% to 20% amber, usually day 58 to 63; a later cut suits the strain’s evening character. Dry for 12 days at 60% humidity and cure for at least three weeks, when the coffee and vanilla notes come through fully.

Yield

Indoors, 400 to 550 g/m² is realistic for a trained plant. Outdoors, a full-season plant in a 50 litre pot or in the ground gives 450 to 650 g dried, and Prairie plants started in April return 300 to 450 g. The buds are compact and heavy, so dry weight holds up well, and the resin makes excellent hash.
