Where Cadillac Rainbow comes from

Cadillac Rainbow strain is a Michigan cross through and through: Pure Michigan, the gassy, grape-and-cream cultivar that made the state's growing scene famous, paired with Runtz, the candy-sweet Zkittlez and Gelato hybrid that has fingerprints on half the modern menu. It surfaced around 2020, and the name is a nod to both its birthplace and the spread of colours a finished plant puts out, which run from dark olive through violet to a dusty gold.

It is sometimes listed as Cadillac Rainbows or Cadillac Rainbowz, and all three names point at the same plant. The genetics land it at roughly 70% indica, and unlike a lot of Runtz descendants it kept more of the gas than the candy, which is the single thing most reviews mention first.

Cadillac Rainbow strain effects and experience

The opening is sociable. For the first twenty minutes there is a light, chatty euphoria with a bit of creative pull to it, and people often underestimate the strain at that point. Then the indica share takes hold and the effect settles into the shoulders and legs, warm and heavy without being immediately sedating. Appetite follows reliably, so this is a strain to meet with food already in the house.

The THC range runs from 25% all the way to 32% depending on the phenotype and the finish, and the top of that range is genuinely a lot. One small session is the right introduction; the second one can be judged an hour later.

Cadillac Rainbow flavour, aroma and appearance

The nose is gas first, a sharp fuel note with lemon peel cutting through it, then a sweeter layer of cherry and a cool mint finish that comes from the Runtz side. Ground up it gets sourer and more citrus-forward. The smoke is smooth for something this gassy and leaves a candied aftertaste that lingers longer than most.

Visually it is the reason people buy Cadillac Rainbow seeds in the first place. The nugs are oversized and slightly conical, less rock-hard than a typical indica, and the colour range in a cold finish is genuinely unusual: dark olive bracts turning violet and near-black, thin reddish-orange hairs threading through, and a blue-tinted trichome coat over all of it. Indoors

This is one of the easier high-potency strains to run. It stretches moderately, around 1.5 times, and settles at 90 to 150 cm after a four week veg. Keep days at 22 to 26 degrees and, from week five, let the night temperature fall to 14 or 15 degrees; the anthocyanin that produces the purple only expresses when the plant gets a real day and night swing. Feeding is straightforward and it shrugs off small mistakes that would stall a fussier dessert strain. Flower runs 56 to 63 days, and the looser bud structure means humidity in the low fifties is safe rather than dangerous.

Outdoors, by region

An 8 to 9 week flower makes Cadillac Rainbow a realistic outdoor plant across most of the country. BC, southern Ontario and Quebec can plant out in late May and cut in the last week of September or the first days of October, and the cooling nights in that window are exactly what the colour needs. The Maritimes will usually finish by the first week of October in a sheltered, south-facing spot. Prairie gardeners should start indoors in early April so the plant is well established before it goes out around the long weekend in May, and a fabric pot that can be dragged under cover on a frost night removes most of the risk. Height and training

Because the stretch is modest, a single topping and some low stress training is enough. Spread the four main branches early and the plant fills a net evenly without much intervention. The buds are large but not especially dense, so branch support is rarely needed before the final fortnight, and even then a single stake usually does it.

Flowering and harvest cues

Colour arrives before ripeness on this plant, which catches people out: a fully purple Cadillac Rainbow at day 50 is still two weeks from done. Check trichomes from day 54 and harvest when they are mostly cloudy with the first amber showing, usually day 58 to 63. Dry slowly at 60% humidity for 12 days to protect the citrus notes, then cure. The gas sharpens noticeably in the third week of cure.

Cadillac Rainbow yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, expect 450 to 550 g/m² from a filled canopy. The buds are large and a little airy, so the wet weight flatters and the dry weight lands slightly lower than a dense indica of the same size, which is worth knowing before you plan a run around it. Who Cadillac Rainbow is for, and who should pick something else

Grow Cadillac Rainbow if you want the most photogenic jar you can produce without chasing a difficult plant, if you garden outdoors in a region with cold September nights, or if you want serious potency on a second or third grow rather than a tenth.
