Where Jet Fuel comes from

The Jet Fuel strain was created in Colorado by crossing Aspen OG, a San Fernando Valley OG cut, with High Country Diesel, a blend of Original Diesel and East Coast Sour Diesel. The OG side brings the structure, the pine and a steady body base; the Diesel side is where the sharp fuel smell and the fast, energetic head high come from. It has been around since the late 2000s and remains one of the reference strains for the diesel flavour.

Jet Fuel is sold under several names, including G6, Jet Fuel OG and Jet Fuel G6, all referring to the same genetics. It should not be confused with newer crosses such as Jet Fuel Gelato, which share part of the name but not the same lineage.

Jet Fuel flavour, aroma and appearance

The nose is pure fuel: sharp petrol and diesel, backed by pine, lemon peel and earth. Myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene are the main terpenes, with humulene and pinene adding the woody, herbal edge. The smoke is pungent and a little harsh if the cure is short, and the diesel lingers long after the exhale, both on the palate and in the room.

The buds are medium sized, conical and lighter green than most modern hybrids, with a loose to medium density, thin orange pistils and a good coating of trichomes. It is a plant that impresses more by smell than by colour.

Growing Jet Fuel in Canada

Indoors

Jet Fuel stretches more than an indica, so plan for a short veg of three to four weeks and a flip at 35 to 45 cm, which should give a finished height of 100 to 150 cm. It likes plenty of light and a warm room, 24 to 28 degrees in the day, and a medium feed with a little extra magnesium in mid flower. The smell is extreme from week four onward, so use a correctly sized carbon filter and check it before the flip, not after.

Outdoors, by region

A 9 to 10 week flower and a harvest in early to mid October make Jet Fuel a plant for coastal BC and southern Ontario outdoors. On Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Lower Mainland, start indoors in April, plant out in late May in the sunniest spot you have, and expect to harvest in the first two weeks of October; the looser bud structure handles coastal damp better than most dense hybrids. In the Niagara region, Essex County and the Toronto area, a warm September usually carries it to the finish. In the Prairies, northern Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, grow it indoors or in a greenhouse; the frost usually comes before it is ready.

Height and training

Top early and train hard. Jet Fuel responds well to low stress training and a screen of green, which keeps its sativa stretch in check and turns a tall single spear into a flat canopy of ten to fourteen tops. Supercropping the tallest branches during the first two weeks of flower keeps the canopy even.

Flowering and harvest cues

Expect 63 to 70 days from the flip. Start checking trichomes around day 60; for the brightest, most energetic version of the high, harvest when most heads are cloudy with very little amber. Letting it go to 10% amber adds a little more body without losing the sativa character. Dry slowly for 12 to 14 days and cure for at least three weeks to take the harshness out of the smoke.

Indoors, a well trained canopy returns 350 to 450 g/m², and a plant grown in coastal BC or southern Ontario can give 400 to 550 g outdoors in a good season.
