Where Snowball comes from

Snowball is a cross of The White, a famously frosty OG-family strain valued for trichome production more than for flavour, and Chem 4 OG, which combines the diesel and sour funk of Chem 4 with the pine and fuel of OG Kush. It was released by an American breeder in the 2010s and gained its name from the look of the dried buds, which are so heavily frosted that the green barely shows through.

Some menus call the gradual build of its effect a snowball effect, and that describes the experience well: it starts mild and keeps gathering weight. The strain is indica dominant, about 70/30, and grows like a medium sized OG hybrid with sturdy branches and dense, conical colas.

The first minutes are subtle: a warm tingle, a gentle lift in mood and a slight heaviness around the eyes. Over the next forty minutes it keeps building, body first, until the whole frame feels heavy and relaxed while the head stays content and quiet. Snowball is an evening strain through and through. Growing Snowball in Canada

Indoors

Veg Snowball for about four weeks and flip at 50 to 60 cm; with a stretch of 1.6 to 2 times it finishes at 100 to 150 cm. It feeds moderately to heavily and appreciates a good supply of phosphorus and potassium from week three of flower. Keep the room at 23 to 27 degrees and humidity under 45% from week five. Outdoors, by region

A 9 to 10 week flower limits Snowball outdoors to the longest Canadian seasons. On Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast, start indoors in April, plant out in late May and harvest in early to mid October, with a rain cover ready for the last two weeks because the colas are dense. In southern Ontario, the Niagara Peninsula and Essex County can manage it in a warm, dry fall; a greenhouse removes most of the risk. In Quebec, on the Prairies and in the Atlantic provinces, Snowball is an indoor or greenhouse plant, where it is productive and much easier to control.

Height and training

Top at the fourth or fifth node and spread the branches under a net. The OG side makes the branches stiff after the second week of flower, so finish training before the flip. Remove the lower growth at the start of flower, and add a second net or stakes by week five, since the frosty colas get heavy. Thinning the fan leaves around week three improves airflow and light on the bud sites.

Flowering and harvest cues

Snowball looks ready early because it is so frosty. Ignore the look and use a loupe: harvest when the trichomes are mostly cloudy with 10% to 20% amber, usually day 65 to 70. Handle the dried buds gently, since the resin heads are fragile. Dry for two weeks at 60% humidity and around 18 degrees, then cure for three weeks or longer; the creamy side of the aroma takes time to come through the gas.

Snowball yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, 400 to 550 g/m² is typical under a well trained canopy. Outdoors in coastal BC, a full-season plant gives 500 to 700 g dried. The real value of Snowball is resin: dry sift, ice water hash and rosin all return well above average, and the trim is worth keeping for extraction. Growers who run it for concentrates often harvest a few days earlier, at mostly cloudy trichomes, because the heads are at their most intact then and wash more cleanly. Keep the plant count modest and the canopy even; a well spread tent of three or four Snowball plants usually beats six crowded ones.

Who Snowball is for, and who should pick something else

Grow Snowball if you love gassy, OG-style strains, if you make hash or rosin, or if you want a slow, heavy evening strain with serious bag appeal.
