Where Mule Fuel comes from

Mule Fuel is a cross of GMO, the garlic and diesel Cookies strain that became one of the most popular indicas of the last decade, and Lurch, a pungent, heavily resinous cut with a sour, skunky edge. The goal was to keep GMO’s strength and savoury funk on a shorter, more manageable plant, and it largely worked. Mule Fuel grows stockier than GMO and keeps much of the fuel.

The name describes both the smell and the effect. One sniff gives the fuel, and the effect is strong enough that many people compare it to a kick. Select cuts have posted lab results above 30% THC, and that reputation helped it spread quickly across dispensary menus in the early 2020s.

Mule Fuel starts with a brief, pleasant lift, a sense of calm confidence and a lighter mood that lasts twenty to thirty minutes. Then the body effect arrives: heavy limbs, a slower pace and a strong urge to sit down. By the second hour most people are firmly on the couch, and many are asleep before the effect fades. It is a night strain and nothing else.

The aroma is loud and savoury. Diesel and lighter fluid come first, followed by roasted garlic from GMO and an earthy mix of hay, tobacco and sour, overripe fruit from Lurch. The inhale is surprisingly sweet and smooth; the exhale is thick with fuel and funk and lingers for a long time. Caryophyllene leads the terpene profile, with limonene and myrcene behind it.

Buds are dense and chunky, bright to olive green with orange pistils and a thick coat of trichomes. Some phenotypes show purple sugar leaves in a cool finish. Growing Mule Fuel in Canada

Indoors

Mule Fuel is easier to fit into a tent than its GMO parent. A four week veg and a flip at 45 to 50 cm finishes at 90 to 140 cm after a stretch of 1.5 to 1.8 times. It feeds moderately to heavily and responds well to extra phosphorus and potassium from week three of flower. Keep the room at 23 to 27 degrees during the day and below 45% humidity from week five, as the buds are dense. Flowering usually takes 63 to 70 days, and a few GMO-leaning phenotypes need up to 74. A carbon filter matched to your fan is not optional.

Outdoors, by region

Outdoors, Mule Fuel needs a long, dry season and a private spot. The south coast of BC, including the Fraser Valley and southern Vancouver Island, gives it enough time for a mid October harvest with a rain cover in place from late September. Southern Ontario can manage in a warm, dry autumn, but a greenhouse is the safer choice there. Light deprivation is a good tool for this strain: covering plants to force 12 hours of darkness from late July brings harvest forward to mid September, which opens up more of the country. On the Prairies, in Quebec and in Atlantic Canada, grow it indoors or in a light-dep greenhouse. Strong odour also makes an indoor grow more discreet in any region.

Height and training

Mule Fuel’s thick branches can support heavy buds, so topping twice and spreading the plant into eight to twelve main tops works well. A single net keeps the canopy flat. Defoliate lightly at the flip and again at day 21 to open the dense centre. Support the heaviest tops in the last three weeks, especially on larger plants.

Flowering and harvest cues

Mule Fuel keeps gaining weight in the last two weeks, and the fuel smell becomes much stronger at the same time. Check trichomes from day 63 and harvest when most are cloudy with 10% to 20% amber for the full, heavy effect. Dry for 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity and cure for three weeks. The raw garlic smell softens and the diesel becomes cleaner after a month in the jar.

Mule Fuel yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, a trained canopy gives 400 to 550 g/m² of dense, heavy buds. Outdoors on the BC coast or in a greenhouse, plants in 60 to 100 litre containers yield 450 to 700 g each. Mule Fuel is also highly valued for extraction; its resin makes it one of the better choices for hash and rosin, and even the trim is worth keeping.
