Where High Octane comes from
High Octane strain is one of the many named selections from the OG Kush family that circulated through Southern California in the 2000s. Its listed parents are Chemdawg, Lemon Thai and Hindu Kush, the same three families usually given for OG Kush, which is why many growers treat High Octane as a particularly fuel-heavy OG cut rather than a brand new cross. For years it was passed around mainly as a clone, and seed versions aim to capture that cut’s loud lemon fuel and heavy finish.
The name describes the smell. Open a jar and the first impression is sour, chemical gas, the kind that makes people ask what you have spilled. Sources differ on the balance, with some calling it a 50/50 hybrid and others treating it as nearly pure indica; in practice the effect lands firmly on the relaxing side, so we file it with our indica leaning strains. It is not related to newer strains that use the word Octane with fruit names, which are separate crosses.
High Octane strain effects and experience
The opening is a short, mild lift: a bit of mental ease, a smile, a sense of the day’s noise fading. That phase does not last long. Within twenty to thirty minutes a tingling heaviness spreads through the body, eyelids get heavy and the evening slows down. Many people describe it as couch-lock in the classic OG sense, especially from a large session.
With THC from 19% to 26%, High Octane is strong without being extreme, but the body effect is pronounced. Dry mouth and red eyes are common, and it is best kept for evenings when nothing else needs doing. If you prefer to stay upright, a small amount goes a long way.
High Octane flavour, aroma and appearance
The aroma is pungent and sharp: sour lemon peel, diesel fumes and a damp, earthy forest note, with spicy herbs and pepper appearing when a bud is broken. The smoke tastes of sour citrus and pine on the inhale and turns woody and herbal on the exhale, with the fuel lingering on the tongue. Limonene, caryophyllene and myrcene usually lead, with pinene adding the forest edge that ties it to the wider OG family.
Buds are small to medium, from popcorn size on the lower branches to golf balls at the tops, minty green with bright orange hairs and a thick layer of white trichomes. They are dense and slightly spear shaped, the classic OG look rather than a dessert-strain marble.
Growing High Octane in Canada
Indoors
High Octane behaves like most OG cuts: vigorous, a little stretchy and fussy about its root zone. Veg for four weeks and flip at 40 cm; expect the plant to roughly double, finishing between 90 and 140 cm. It prefers a warm, dry room, 24 to 28 degrees in the day, and steady airflow above and below the canopy. OG lines are known for being sensitive to overwatering and to high feed levels, so water only when the pot is light and feed at a medium rate with extra calcium and magnesium from week two of flower. Plan on 56 to 63 days from the flip.
Outdoors, by region
The 8 to 9 week bloom gives High Octane a workable outdoor window in most southern parts of the country, with one caveat: OG strains dislike damp, still air and are prone to powdery mildew. In the BC Interior, the Okanagan and the dry southern Prairies, where late summer is sunny and the air moves, plants started indoors in April and set out in late May finish in late September or the first days of October. On the wetter BC coast, in southern Ontario and in the Maritimes, choose a breezy, sunny site, prune the interior for airflow and consider a simple rain cover from mid September. Whatever the region, keep plants away from fences or walls that trap humidity.
Height and training
Top once or twice and use a single layer of trellis net. OG branches are flexible early but can be thin, and the dense tops get heavy in the final weeks, so support them before they fold. Remove large fan leaves blocking bud sites in week three of flower to help light and air reach the middle of the plant. Plan for odour, too: this is among the loudest plants you can grow. A carbon filter sized for your tent is essential indoors, and outdoor plants are noticeable from the street in late flower. Our guide to managing cannabis smell covers filters, placement and timing.
Flowering and harvest cues
Check trichomes from about day 54. Mostly cloudy with 10% to 15% amber delivers the full body effect High Octane is known for; harvesting earlier gives a lighter, more cerebral result. Dry slowly for 10 to 14 days at around 18 degrees and 60% humidity, and cure for at least three weeks. The lemon and fuel sharpen noticeably during the cure.
High Octane yield indoors and outdoors
Like most OGs, High Octane trades some weight for quality. Indoors, expect 350 to 500 g/m² from a trained canopy. Outdoors, healthy plants in large containers or beds give 400 to 600 g each in a dry, sunny season. The bud density means less loss in the dry, and the resin-rich trim makes good hash.
Who High Octane is for, and who should pick something else
Grow High Octane feminized seeds if you love classic OG fuel and want something more pungent than a standard OG Kush, if you want a firm evening strain, or if you have a grow space with good airflow and a carbon filter already in place. Growers with a run or two of experience will find it straightforward.
Pick something else if you need a stealthy plant, if your grow room struggles to stay dry, or if you want a daytime strain. For a first grow, a more forgiving hybrid will give a better result while you learn.
How High Octane compares
OG Kush shares the same family recipe and is a little more balanced, with more pine and less sour fuel. Chemdawg is the source of the chemical gas and is taller, racier and more sativa in feel. Hindu Kush provides the hash-like earthiness and the short, sturdy frame. Sour Diesel, a Chemdawg relative, is the energetic, sativa side of the same fuel family. More strains like this sit in our indica dominant feminized seeds range.
Frequently asked questions about High Octane
Is High Octane strain indica or sativa?
High Octane is an indica leaning hybrid. Some listings call it 50/50, but the effect is mostly relaxing, with a brief mental lift followed by a heavy, tingling body feeling. Most people treat it as an evening strain.
What is High Octane strain a cross of?
High Octane is a cross of Chemdawg, Lemon Thai and Hindu Kush, the same family recipe given for OG Kush. For that reason it is widely seen as a fuel-heavy OG Kush selection, and it is also sold as High Octane OG or High Octane Kush.
What does High Octane smell like?
High Octane smells of sour lemon and diesel fuel, with pine, damp earth and spicy herbs underneath. It is one of the most pungent strains you can grow, so plan on a carbon filter indoors and a discreet spot outdoors.
How strong is High Octane?
High Octane usually tests between 19% and 26% THC with CBD under 1%. It is strong, and the body effect is heavy, so a small first session is wise. Dry mouth and red eyes are the most common side effects.
