Banana OG Feminized at a glance: Banana OG is an indica dominant cross of OG Kush and Banana that flowers in 8 to 9 weeks, tests 20% to 27% THC and yields 400 to 500 g/m² of dense, lime-green buds that smell like ripe banana, sweet tropical fruit and OG pine.
A late September harvest that beats the October rains, from seeds stocked in Vancouver
Ask a coastal grower what kills outdoor crops and the answer is almost always October rain. Banana OG sidesteps much of that risk by finishing in the last week or two of September in most growing regions. Getting the seeds is just as uncomplicated: they are already in our Vancouver, BC seed bank and go out in plain, unbranded packaging by domestic post, reaching Yukon to Newfoundland in 3 to 7 business days. Our 80% germination guarantee covers every pack started with the cup of water and paper towel method, and 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free.
Where Banana OG comes from
Banana OG strain first appeared in California in the late 2000s, when a breeder crossed an OG Kush female with a male from a fruity Banana line. Accounts of that Banana male differ; some trace it to a Skunk and Haze background, which would explain the sweet tropical top note sitting on an OG frame. A few seed lines reverse the parents or use Banana Kush instead, and some modern releases are stabilised Banana OG selections rather than the original cross. What they share is the core profile: OG structure and potency with a ripe banana nose.
Banana OG is easy to confuse with Banana Kush. They are cousins rather than twins. Banana Kush is usually described as Ghost OG crossed with Skunk Haze and tends to be a touch more uplifting, while Banana OG carries more of OG Kush’s weight and pine. Banana OG has also become a parent in its own right; our Banana Cream, for example, is Banana OG crossed with Cookies and Cream.
Banana OG strain effects and experience
Banana OG has a reputation as a creeper. The first fifteen minutes feel light and cheerful, with a mild buzz behind the eyes and a loosening in the neck. Then the OG side arrives: a heavy, tingly body calm that deepens for the next hour, often bringing a strong appetite and finally sleep. Most reviewers rate it relaxed, sleepy and tingly, and it is best saved for evenings with nothing left on the list.
With THC from 20% to 27%, the main risk is impatience. People who take a second dose before the first has fully landed tend to end up asleep earlier than they planned. Dry mouth and dry eyes are common side notes.
Banana OG flavour, aroma and appearance
The smell is the reason people search for it. A cured jar releases overripe banana, almost like banana bread batter, with a sweet tropical edge and a waft of lemon. Underneath sits the classic OG base of pine, earth and a little fuel. The smoke is smooth and sweet on the inhale, turning earthy and lightly spicy on the exhale. Limonene usually leads the terpene profile, supported by caryophyllene and myrcene; that myrcene share may be why the effect feels heavier than the bright aroma suggests.
The buds are medium sized, dense and slightly spade shaped, with lime-green calyxes, amber pistils and a thick coat of trichomes. It is not a colourful strain, but well grown Banana OG looks almost white under the frost.
Growing Banana OG in Canada
Indoors
Banana OG stays short and bushy, which makes it easier to fit into a tent than many OG types. Veg for four weeks and flip at 30 to 40 cm; finished height is usually 70 to 120 cm. Keep daytime temperatures at 24 to 27 degrees and humidity near 50% early in bloom, falling to 40% to 45% from week five. Like most OGs it is sensitive to overfeeding and to cold, wet roots, so water to a light runoff, let the top few centimetres dry between waterings and add cal-mag under LED. A carbon filter is wise: the banana note gets loud from week four.
Outdoors, by region
An 8 to 9 week bloom means Banana OG can finish outdoors across most of southern Canada. In coastal BC and the Fraser Valley, plants set out in late May are usually ready in the last week of September, ahead of the heavy rains. The Okanagan, the Kootenays and southern Alberta’s chinook belt offer dry, sunny late summers that suit it well. In southern Ontario, Quebec’s St. Lawrence lowlands and the Maritimes, expect a harvest at the end of September. Prairie growers should start indoors in early to mid April, harden off in late May and pick a sheltered, sunny spot, with frost cloth ready for any early September cold snap.
Height and training
Because it grows wide rather than tall, Banana OG rewards topping and low stress training. Top at the fourth or fifth node, spread the branches into a flat canopy, and fill a screen of green before the flip. Remove the small lower shoots and thin interior leaves at day 21 to keep the dense buds dry.
Flowering and harvest cues
Banana OG often looks ready before it is. Pistils darken by week seven, but the trichomes usually need until day 56 to 63 to turn mostly cloudy. Harvest with a few amber heads for the full body effect. Dry slowly for 10 to 14 days at 60% humidity; the banana aroma is fragile and fades with a fast, warm dry. After a three week cure it comes back in full.
Banana OG yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, a well trained canopy gives 400 to 500 g/m², respectable for a compact OG. Outdoor plants in 50 to 80 litre pots or garden beds produce 400 to 600 g each in a warm, dry season. The flower is dense and the trim is resin rich, so lower buds make good cooking butter or dry sift.
Who Banana OG is for, and who should pick something else
Grow Banana OG feminized seeds if you want a fruity twist on a classic OG, need a short plant for a small space, or want an outdoor crop that finishes before October. It suits growers who can manage watering and humidity carefully, and it is a good next step after an easy first harvest.
Choose something else if you want an energetic daytime strain, if your space runs cold and damp, or if you dislike earthy OG notes, because the pine and fuel are always there under the fruit.
How Banana OG compares
OG Kush is the parent: more pine and fuel, less fruit, and a bit taller. Banana Kush is the sweeter, slightly brighter cousin. Banana Cream, its child with Cookies and Cream, adds vanilla and a longer bloom. For banana with berry, Banana Punch is worth a look. More relaxing options are collected in our indica feminized seeds, and our humidity guide covers the dry-room numbers this strain needs.
Frequently asked questions about Banana OG
What is Banana OG strain?
Banana OG is an indica dominant hybrid made by crossing OG Kush with a fruity Banana line. It tests 20% to 27% THC, flowers in 8 to 9 weeks and is known for a strong overripe banana aroma over OG pine and earth. It is also the parent of Banana Cream.
Is Banana OG indica or sativa?
Banana OG is an indica dominant hybrid, about 70% indica and 30% sativa. It opens with a light, happy buzz and then settles into a heavy, tingly body calm that often ends in sleep, so most people use it in the evening.
What is the difference between Banana OG and Banana Kush?
Banana OG and Banana Kush are related but not the same. Banana OG is OG Kush crossed with a Banana male and carries more OG pine and weight, while Banana Kush is usually listed as Ghost OG crossed with Skunk Haze and feels a little brighter and sweeter.
Is Banana OG a creeper?
Yes, Banana OG is known as a creeper. The first fifteen minutes feel mild, then the body effect builds steadily for about an hour. Waiting at least twenty to thirty minutes before taking more is the best way to avoid an earlier night than you planned.
