Where Blue Lobster comes from

The Blue Lobster strain is a cross of Apples and Bananas and Eye Candy. Apples and Bananas is itself a blend of Platinum Cookies, Granddaddy Purple, Blue Power and Gelatti, which is where the fruit, the purple pigment and the cookie density come from. Eye Candy brings a louder candy sweetness and a little gas. The combination is a newer release that grew a reputation quickly on the West Coast for bag appeal, and it has since started a small family of related crosses.

There is no official story behind the name. The most common reading is visual: rare blue lobsters are prized for colour, and a well finished Blue Lobster plant is a deep blue-purple with bright orange pistils, a combination that looks almost cooked. Whatever the origin, it is one of the few strains that looks the way its name sounds.

Blue Lobster strain effects and experience

The opening is friendly and bright: a lift in mood, a slight fizz behind the eyes and an easy urge to talk. That phase is short. Within half an hour the indica side comes through as a heavy, warm relaxation that settles into the limbs and slows everything down, and for most people it stays that way until the session is over.

This is an evening strain. At 24% to 30% THC it is firmly in the strong category, and the candy flavour makes it easy to go further than intended, so a single small amount is the sensible first try.

Blue Lobster flavour, aroma and appearance

Limonene leads the terpene mix, backed by myrcene and caryophyllene. The first note is blueberry candy and sweet grape; as the jar breathes, a crisp green apple and a hint of banana come through from the Apples and Bananas side, and the exhale carries a gentle gas and herbal edge that keeps it from tasting like pure sugar.

It is a striking plant. The fan leaves darken to plum and near-black from mid flower, especially with night temperatures in the mid teens, and the buds are dense, round and coated in a thick layer of trichomes that sits over purple calyxes and orange pistils. Photographs of well grown Blue Lobster tend to look retouched; they are not.

Growing Blue Lobster in Canada

Indoors

Blue Lobster grows to medium height, usually 90 to 140 cm after a moderate stretch from a four week veg. It prefers a slightly lighter feed than its size suggests and a pH held carefully between 6.0 and 6.5 in soil, since purple strains can hide deficiencies until they are advanced. Run 22 to 26 degrees in the day and let nights fall to 16 to 18 degrees from week six. Keep humidity under 50% from week five; the tight, round buds are the part of the plant most at risk.

Outdoors, by region

With a flower of 8 to 10 weeks and a harvest in early to mid October, Blue Lobster belongs on the BC coast and in southern Ontario outdoors, where the late season is long enough and the cold nights finish the colour. Plant out in late May in full sun and place it where wind can move through the canopy, because a foggy coastal morning on a dense bud is the main risk. Faster phenotypes can finish in the southern Okanagan or southern Quebec in a warm year, but it is a gamble. On the Prairies and in the Atlantic provinces a greenhouse gives you the colour without the frost risk.

Height and training

Top once or twice and spread the plant with low stress training to build a wide, even canopy. The branches are moderately strong, but the buds get heavy in the final three weeks, so a trellis net or a few bamboo stakes save a lot of propping later. Clear out small growth from the bottom third at the flip to improve airflow.

Flowering and harvest cues

The purple arrives before the plant is ripe, so do not let colour set the harvest date. From day 56, check trichomes on the top buds; cloudy heads with 10% to 15% amber give the full, heavy version of the effect. Dry slowly for 12 to 14 days, then cure for at least two weeks, which is when the blueberry and apple notes separate from the general sweetness.

Blue Lobster yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, a well trained plant returns 400 to 550 g/m² of dense, heavy flower. Outdoors in coastal BC or southern Ontario, a full-season plant in a large container gives 450 to 650 g. The resin content is high, so trim and smaller buds are valuable for hash, dry sift or rosin.

Grow Blue Lobster feminized seeds if you want one of the most visually striking plants you can raise, a candy flavour with real depth, and a strong evening effect. It rewards a grower who can control temperature and humidity through late flower.

Pick something else if you want a daytime strain, a first grow with little risk, or an outdoor plant for a short northern season. For a softer, easier blue-fruit profile, Blueberry is the long-standing classic.
