Donkey Butter is a 70/30 indica dominant Grease Monkey x Triple OG hybrid that flowers in 8 to 9 weeks, tests 22% to 28% THC and gives 400 to 550 g/m² indoors of long, frosty, army green buds that smell of diesel, pine and spice.
Where Donkey Butter comes from
Donkey Butter strain is a cross of Grease Monkey and Triple OG, bred in the United States and later dropped from its breeder's lineup. Grease Monkey brings Gorilla Glue #4 and Cookies and Cream, which explains the heavy resin and the sweet, doughy undertone. Triple OG is a three way Kush blend built from Triangle Kush, Master Kush and an OG Kush cut, and it supplies the pine, the fuel and the sleepy finish. Put together, the cross is a gas forward indica with far more frost than its name suggests.
Nobody has ever given a clear explanation for the name, though growers like to joke that it smells rich enough to spread on toast and hits hard enough to kick like a mule. Some people shorten it to Donkey Butt. It is not the same as Donkey Kong, which shares only the Grease Monkey parent and leans sativa, and it should not be confused with a high CBD plant sold under a similar name. The seeds on this page are the Grease Monkey and Triple OG cross.
Donkey Butter strain effects and experience
Donkey Butter opens with a short, buzzy rush that can make the mind race for a few minutes. That passes quickly into a warm, happy euphoria and then a heavy, full body relaxation that sinks you into whatever chair you happen to be in. Eyelids droop, the snack cupboard calls, and a quiet night at home starts to feel like the only reasonable plan.
This is a strong strain. Lab results commonly sit in the mid twenties for THC, and some batches test higher. It is best kept for evenings when nothing else is on the schedule. Newer users should start with a very small amount; too much can bring dizziness, a pounding heart or an early, deep sleep. Dry mouth and red eyes are almost guaranteed.
Donkey Butter flavour, aroma and appearance
The aroma is loud and polarising. Diesel and pine hit first, then skunk, damp earth and black pepper, and a few phenotypes add a sharp note of lime peel or clementine over a musky base. The smoke is thick and oily, with gas on the inhale and a sweet, buttery dough on the exhale that comes from the Cookies and Cream side. Some people love it immediately; others find it too pungent. No verified terpene panel has been published, so we would rather describe what you will smell than guess at the numbers.
Buds are long and tapered rather than round, olive to army green, and coated in heavy frost. Orange to amber pistils curl through the calyxes. Cool nights in weeks eight and nine can bring purple into the sugar leaves and the tips of the colas.
Growing Donkey Butter in Canada
Indoors
Donkey Butter grows as a medium plant, finishing at around 70 to 130 cm indoors depending on veg time. It likes warmth, around 24 to 28 degrees with lights on, and moderate humidity through veg. The Gorilla Glue side makes it bushy, and it needs regular pruning to keep the middle of the plant open: remove small inner shoots every week through the stretch. Drop humidity to 40% to 45% in the second half of bloom and run strong air flow, because the tight colas trap moisture. Its smell is as strong as its effect, so a carbon filter is essential.
Outdoors, by region
With an 8 to 9 week bloom, Donkey Butter finishes outdoors from late September into early October across much of southern Canada. The Okanagan, the Kootenays and the Fraser Valley in BC, southern Ontario and the St. Lawrence lowlands are all realistic. On the Prairies, start indoors in April so the plant goes out in June with a solid root system and a few weeks of growth; it should then finish ahead of the first serious frost. Atlantic growers do best with a raised bed against a south facing wall and a cover against September rain.
Height and training
Top once early and then train the plant flat with low stress ties, aiming for eight to twelve even tops. It responds well to a scrog net. Supercropping the tallest branches in the first week of flower keeps the canopy level. The branches are fairly strong, but the heavy colas may still need a stake or trellis support near the end.
Flowering and harvest cues
Count 56 to 63 days of bloom. Harvest when most trichome heads are milky and 15% to 20% are amber for the full, heavy effect. Pull it earlier and the brief racing start is more noticeable. Dry slowly for 12 to 14 days and cure for a month; the butter and dough notes only fully appear after a proper cure.
Donkey Butter yield indoors and outdoors
Donkey Butter has a reputation as a heavy producer for an indica of its size. A trained indoor canopy usually returns about 400 to 550 g/m², and outdoor plants can give around 450 to 600 g each. Its thick resin also makes it a good choice for hash and rosin, where the return per gram of trim is better than the dense buds might suggest.
Who Donkey Butter is for, and who should pick something else
Donkey Butter is for experienced consumers who want a gassy, heavy evening strain, and for growers who like a bushy plant with lots of resin. Fans of Grease Monkey, Gorilla Glue #4 or classic OG Kush will feel at home with the flavour.
If you are new to cannabis, or you need a strain for daytime, this is a poor match. Growers without solid odour control should also think twice, because the smell is impossible to hide.
How Donkey Butter compares
Grease Monkey is the parent, sweeter and a bit less sedating, with more vanilla dough. Gorilla Glue #4 is the grandparent behind the resin, earthier and more balanced. Cookies and Cream adds the sweet, creamy side of the family. Triangle Kush, one of the three Kush lines inside Triple OG, gives a sense of the fuel and pine underneath.
