Where Grease Monkey comes from

The Grease Monkey strain is a cross of Gorilla Glue #4 and Cookies and Cream. GG4, the famously sticky Chem and Sour Dubb descendant, brings the thick resin, the fuel note and the heavy body effect. Cookies and Cream, a Starfighter and Girl Scout Cookies cross, adds the vanilla and nutty sweetness, the dense structure and a creamier smoke. It came out of the American West in the mid 2010s and has been a steady favourite with hash makers ever since.

The name is a nod to both parents: the grease is the diesel and resin from GG4, and the monkey is a playful reference to the Gorilla in the lineage. On a well grown plant the resin is so heavy that scissors gum up within minutes of starting the trim, which is about as literal as a strain name gets.

Grease Monkey opens with a short, pleasant lift, a warm feeling of contentment and a quieter mind, and then moves into a solid, heavy body relaxation within the first half hour. It is not a racy or talkative strain. Most people describe it as calm, happy and increasingly unwilling to get up, with a strong appetite showing up somewhere in the second hour.

At 20% to 27% THC it is strong but not extreme, and it tends to be predictable from plant to plant, which makes it a good evening option for people who already know how they respond to high-THC flower.

Grease Monkey flavour, aroma and appearance

Caryophyllene leads, giving a pepper and spice base that ties the two parents together, with limonene adding a light citrus lift and myrcene a musky, earthy depth. The smell is sweet vanilla cookie and roasted nuts on top, with a sharp diesel and pine underneath that grows louder when you break a bud. The smoke is smooth and creamy, and the exhale leaves a mix of vanilla and fuel.

The buds are dense and chunky, olive to forest green with orange pistils, and they are coated so heavily that they look silver under light. Colder nights can pull a little purple into the sugar leaves, but this is mainly a green, frosty strain.

Growing Grease Monkey in Canada

Indoors

Grease Monkey is one of the more forgiving strains in this potency range. A four week veg gives a plant of 90 to 140 cm after a moderate stretch, with strong branches and a canopy that fills out quickly. It takes a medium to heavy feed well and holds up to a few mistakes with pH or watering. Run 22 to 27 degrees in the day and keep humidity near 50% through mid flower, dropping to about 45% for the last three weeks. The smell is strong from week five, so a carbon filter is not optional.

Outdoors, by region

With an 8 to 9 week flower and a harvest in the second half of September, Grease Monkey works across most of Canada. In coastal BC, the Okanagan, southern Ontario and southern Quebec, transplant after the May long weekend and expect to cut in the last two weeks of September. In the Maritimes, give it a sunny, sheltered spot and watch the forecast for early storms. Prairie growers should start indoors in early April, move the plant out once nights stay above 10 degrees in late May, and usually harvest in late September ahead of the frost. Plants can reach 2 metres in the ground, so check your local plant-height and fencing bylaws.

Height and training

Top at the fourth or fifth node and spread the plant into a wide, open shape with low stress ties. Grease Monkey has plenty of side branching, so a screen of green works well indoors, and six to ten main colas is a realistic target. Remove the lowest growth before the flip; the energy is better spent on the top of the canopy.

Flowering and harvest cues

Most plants are ready between days 56 and 63. Start watching the trichomes around day 52 and harvest when most heads are cloudy with 10% to 20% amber, which gives the full, heavy effect this strain is known for. Dry for 10 to 14 days at 60% humidity and around 18 degrees; the vanilla note is at its best after three weeks of cure.

Grease Monkey is one of the better producers among modern dessert crosses. Expect 450 to 550 g/m² indoors from a trained canopy, and 500 to 650 g per plant outdoors in a good season with a large container or open ground. The resin makes it an efficient strain for rosin and hash, so it gives more than the flower weight suggests.
