Acapulco Gold Feminized at a glance: Acapulco Gold is an 80/20 sativa dominant Mexican landrace selection that flowers in 9 to 11 weeks, tests 15% to 23% THC, grows 100 to 180 cm indoors, and gives 400 to 500 g/m² of golden, resinous buds with a toffee, coffee and pine flavour.
A Mexican mountain sativa needs a Canadian head start, and the seeds are one parcel away
Acapulco Gold evolved under a southern sun, so in Canada every week of spring counts. Seeds ordered from us leave our Vancouver, BC seed bank in plain packaging and reach every province in 3 to 7 business days, which means a March order can be germinated indoors before the end of the month. There is no border and no customs queue in the way. Each batch is germination tested in Vancouver, covered by our 80% germination guarantee, and the 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free.
Where Acapulco Gold comes from
Acapulco Gold is a landrace sativa from the Guerrero region of southwestern Mexico, in the mountains behind Acapulco. Farmers there grew it for generations, and by the mid 1960s it had reached the United States and Canada as some of the most prized imported cannabis of its time, known for its golden brown colour and its strength compared with other flower of the era. The name became shorthand for top-quality Mexican cannabis and even appeared in songs and films of the period.
The feminized seeds sold today are selections from that Mexican line, stabilised for home growers. Some seed versions carry a small amount of indica from a later cross to shorten the plant and the flowering time, which is why most sources describe it as about 80% sativa rather than pure. It still grows like a Mexican sativa: tall, narrow leaved and slow to finish.
Acapulco Gold strain effects and experience
Acapulco Gold delivers a bright, clear and happy high. It starts in the head within a few minutes with a lift in mood and energy, a talkative, sociable feeling, and a sharper interest in music or conversation. The body effect is light: a mild looseness rather than any heaviness. It suits the daytime, a walk, a creative afternoon or a gathering with friends, and it tends to wind down gently over two to three hours.
At 15% to 23% THC it is moderate by modern standards, which is part of its appeal. The effect is more about clarity than force. As with any sativa, large sessions can bring a racy or anxious edge, so small amounts are the better approach.
Acapulco Gold flavour, aroma and appearance
The aroma is earthy and sweet, like toffee or caramel, with a roasted coffee note and a hint of chocolate. Breaking a bud releases fresh pine and a sharper lemon. Caryophyllene leads the terpene profile, giving it a warm, peppery depth, with myrcene and limonene behind it. The smoke is smooth and sweet, with coffee and cinnamon on the exhale and a lingering citrus and pine finish.
The buds are long and moderately dense, with light green calyxes that turn golden as they ripen, covered in amber and orange pistils and a good layer of resin. That golden cast in the finished flower is where the name comes from.
Growing Acapulco Gold in Canada
Indoors
Indoors, height is the challenge. Veg for no more than two to three weeks from seed and flip at 30 to 40 cm; Acapulco Gold stretches two to three times, finishing at 100 to 180 cm. It prefers warm conditions, 24 to 28 degrees, and a light feed; landrace sativas burn easily on heavy nutrients. Flowering takes 63 to 77 days, and some plants want the full 11 weeks. The buds are airy enough that rot is a lower risk than with dense hybrids, but keep humidity near 45% to 50% in late flower. A screen of green is the most effective way to fill a tent with this plant.
Outdoors, by region
A 9 to 11 week flower and a late October finish make Acapulco Gold a greenhouse strain in most of Canada. Outdoors, only the warmest parts of coastal BC, such as the Gulf Islands, the Saanich Peninsula and sheltered spots in the Lower Mainland, can bring it in during a dry autumn, and then only with a rain cover for the last three weeks. In southern Ontario, a greenhouse or a light deprivation setup that starts flowering in late July is the reliable path. On the Prairies, in Quebec and in the Atlantic provinces, grow it indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Growers in those regions who want a sativa outdoors should look at our fast flowering seeds for Canada guide.
Height and training
Top early and then use low stress training to lay the plant flat under a net. Acapulco Gold has long internodes and flexible branches that bend easily, so supercropping during the stretch is a useful way to keep colas away from the light. In a greenhouse, plan for 200 cm or more and stake the main stem in early summer. Removing lower branches that will never reach the light keeps the plant’s energy in the top colas.
Flowering and harvest cues
Do not judge ripeness by the pistils, which turn amber early and give the buds a golden look weeks before they are ready. Check trichomes from day 63: for the brightest, most energetic effect, harvest when most are cloudy with very few amber. Dry slowly for 10 to 14 days at about 60% humidity. A cure of four weeks or longer brings the toffee and coffee notes forward and softens the harsher edges.
Acapulco Gold yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, a well trained canopy gives 400 to 500 g/m². In a greenhouse or a long coastal BC season, a large plant can give 500 to 800 g dried. Acapulco Gold is grown for its character and history more than its weight, but a patient grower who gives it room and time is rewarded with a solid harvest.
Who Acapulco Gold is for, and who should pick something else
Grow Acapulco Gold if you love classic sativas and cannabis history, if you want a clear, moderate daytime strain, or if you have a greenhouse or a tall indoor space and some patience. Acapulco Gold seeds are a way to grow a strain that shaped cannabis culture decades ago.
Pick something else if this is your first grow, if you need an outdoor plant for a short season, or if you want a heavy, relaxing evening strain.
How Acapulco Gold compares
Panama is another Central American sativa with a similar clear effect and a long flower. Durban Poison is the African landrace counterpart, sweeter and more anise-scented, and a little faster. Jack Herer is a modern sativa leaning hybrid with a similar cheerful lift and easier growth. Among our sativa feminized seeds, Acapulco Gold is the heritage choice.
Frequently asked questions about Acapulco Gold
Is Acapulco Gold indica or sativa?
Acapulco Gold is a sativa, about 80% sativa and 20% indica in most seed versions. It is a Mexican landrace from the Guerrero mountains near Acapulco. The effect is clear, energetic and sociable, and the plant grows tall with a long flowering time.
Why is it called Acapulco Gold?
It is named after the Acapulco region of Mexico, where it was grown, and the golden colour of its buds. The name dates back to the 1960s, when it was one of the most sought-after imported strains in North America.
How strong is Acapulco Gold?
Acapulco Gold typically tests between 15% and 23% THC, with CBD up to about 1%. That is moderate by modern standards, and the effect is clear rather than overwhelming. It is known more for its classic flavour and bright high than for record potency.
How long does Acapulco Gold take to flower?
Acapulco Gold flowers in 9 to 11 weeks, 63 to 77 days from the switch to 12 hours of light. Outdoors it finishes in mid to late October, so in Canada it is best grown in a greenhouse or indoors, except in the warmest parts of coastal BC.
