Where Motorbreath comes from

Motorbreath is a cross of two gas pillars. Chemdog, the pungent East Coast plant that sits behind Sour Diesel and much of the OG Kush family, supplies the fuel and the sharp chemical bite. SFV OG Kush, a San Fernando Valley selection of OG Kush known for lemon pine flavour and a sturdy frame, adds structure, resin and a heavier body effect. The cross surfaced in California in the early 2010s, and one plant from the original hunt, catalogued as number 15, was so far ahead of its siblings that “Motorbreath 15” became the name most people use for the whole strain.

The name is a fair warning. Open a jar and the first note really does resemble exhaust and wet asphalt, with sour lemon and earthy kush behind it. It is a love-it-or-leave-it smell, and fans of classic gas strains tend to rank it near the top of the modern crop.

The first few minutes bring a warm pressure around the eyes and forehead, a mood lift and a pleasantly quiet head. Then the body side takes over. Shoulders drop, limbs feel heavy, and by the forty minute mark most people are settled somewhere soft with no plans to move. It tends to last around two to three hours and fades into drowsiness rather than stopping abruptly.

With THC in the mid to high twenties and a caryophyllene and myrcene heavy terpene mix, Motorbreath is a strain for evenings and for people who already know their limits. A light session goes a long way; a heavy one usually ends in an early night.

Motorbreath flavour, aroma and appearance

The aroma stacks diesel, earth and damp pine on top of a sour lemon peel note, with a faint savoury, almost meaty edge that comes from the Chemdog side. Grinding releases a sharper chemical tang. The smoke is thick and fuel-forward on the inhale, then turns earthy and peppery with a lemon-pine finish that lingers on the palate. Limonene and pinene sit under the dominant caryophyllene and myrcene.

The buds are dense, round to slightly conical, and lime to olive green with bright orange pistils. Trichome coverage is heavy enough that finished flowers look sugared, and the resin is greasy to the touch, which is why hash makers value the strain. It rarely purples; this is a green OG through and through.

Indoors

Motorbreath behaves like the OG it is. It stretches around 1.5 to 2 times after the flip, so a three to four week veg is plenty for a standard tent, and a finished height of 90 to 150 cm is typical. It likes a warm room, 24 to 27 degrees by day, and a steady feed without heavy spikes; OG plants can react to overfeeding with clawed, dark leaves in early flower. Outdoors, by region

A 9 to 10 week bloom limits Motorbreath outdoors to the warmest, longest seasons. On the BC south coast, in the Okanagan and on Vancouver Island, transplant in late May and expect to harvest between the first and third week of October; the Okanagan’s dry autumn is actually the best outdoor match in the country for its dense buds. In southern Ontario, especially Essex, Niagara and the Lake Erie shore, it can finish in a warm year, but a greenhouse or a light deprivation tarp in early August makes it much safer. On the Prairies, in northern Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, keep it indoors or under cover.

Height and training

Top once or twice and train the branches outward; left untrained, Motorbreath builds a tall main cola with weaker side branches. A single screen at the flip evens the canopy, and a light lollipop of the bottom third keeps energy in the tops. Flowering and harvest cues

Pistils turn and retreat from around day 55, but the trichomes are the better signal. Look for a mostly cloudy field with 10% to 20% amber, usually between day 63 and day 70. Dry slowly, 60% humidity and 18 to 20 degrees for 10 to 14 days, and give it at least three weeks in the jar. The diesel sharpens and the lemon comes forward once the chlorophyll fades.

Indoors, a trained canopy gives 400 to 500 g/m², with dense buds that hold their weight after drying. Outdoors in coastal BC or the Okanagan a full-season plant returns 450 to 600 g. Motorbreath is not a bulk strain in the way Big Bud is, but its resin content lifts the real return for anyone who presses rosin or makes dry sift, where it performs well above its dry weight.
