Where SFV OG comes from

SFV OG is a phenotype of OG Kush selected by growers in the San Fernando Valley, the “SFV” in its name, during the 2000s. OG Kush grown from seed varied a lot in those years, and this group picked the plants with the sharpest fuel nose, the greasiest resin and the tightest node spacing, then kept them going as a stable line. It is a selection, not a hybrid of two different strains.

It is easy to confuse with SFV OG Kush, a related strain made by crossing SFV OG with an Afghani. That version is shorter, heavier and more sedating. SFV OG itself stays closer to the original OG: lemon, pine and fuel on the nose, with a clear head at the start. It later became a parent of Motorbreath and other gas strains of the 2010s.

The plant is about 70/30 indica, but different SFV OG plants from seed can show a spread, with some lankier, sativa leaning phenotypes and a squat, indica heavy one.

SFV OG strain effects and experience

SFV OG opens with a quick lift behind the eyes: brighter mood, a relaxed smile and a light, talkative headspace. The body effect follows within twenty minutes as a steady, calming weight in the shoulders and back, but it seldom tips into the kind of fatigue that ends the evening early.

That balance is why many people remember it as the OG that relaxes without flattening. At 20% to 26% THC it is strong, and a large amount still leads to the couch. Keep it for evenings and slow weekend afternoons.

SFV OG flavour, aroma and appearance

The aroma is pure old-school OG: lemon cleaner and pine sap first, then fuel, damp earth and a hint of spice. Grinding makes the gas louder and brings out a sour, woody edge. The smoke is sharp and resinous: lemon peel and pine on the inhale, diesel, pepper and earth on the exhale. Myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene lead the terpene profile, with pinene adding the forest note.

Buds are dense and knuckle shaped, lime to forest green with thin orange pistils and a greasy layer of trichomes that sticks to scissors. It does not turn purple, but the frost gives finished flowers a silvery look.

Growing SFV OG in Canada

Indoors

Like most OGs, SFV OG stretches: expect about 2 times after the flip. Veg for three to four weeks and flip at 40 to 45 cm to finish between 90 and 150 cm. It likes 21 to 27 degrees, strong light and humidity below 45% from week five, and it is sensitive to calcium and magnesium shortages, so supplement under LED lights. Feed at moderate strength; OG lines show burn quickly. Most plants finish between day 55 and day 65.

Outdoors, by region

An 8 to 9 week bloom lets SFV OG finish across most of southern Canada, and its California roots mean it loves dry, sunny late summers. The Okanagan, the Thompson region and southern Alberta suit it well, with harvests in the last week of September. On the BC coast and in southern Ontario it finishes in early October; OG buds are prone to mould in a damp spell, so wide spacing, early defoliation and a rain cover pay off. On the Prairies, start indoors in April and transplant in late May; the dry air there actually helps. In the Maritimes, only the sunniest, best drained sites are worth trying.

Height and training

Top SFV OG once or twice in veg and use a trellis net to control the stretch; OG branches are thin and bend under heavy buds. Supercropping the tallest stems in the first two weeks of flower keeps the canopy even. Clear the lower third at the flip. Flowering and harvest cues

SFV OG ripens quickly in the last week. Check trichomes from day 54 and harvest when most are cloudy with 10% amber for the bright, balanced effect, or wait for 20% amber for a heavier one. Dry for 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity and 17 to 18 degrees, then cure; the lemon and pine sharpen noticeably after two weeks.

SFV OG is a moderate yielder, like most true OGs. A trained indoor canopy gives 350 to 450 g/m², and a full-season outdoor plant in a dry, sunny spot produces 400 to 600 g. What it lacks in weight it makes up in resin: the greasy trichomes wash and press well, which is why hash makers value it.

Pick something else if you want a heavy yielder, a fruity or dessert flavour, or an easy first grow. Newer growers may find the bushier Afghan Kush more forgiving.
