Where Sour Apple comes from

Sour Apple is most commonly listed as a cross of Sour Diesel and Cinderella 99. Sour Diesel is the East Coast fuel classic, usually traced to Chemdawg and Super Skunk, with a pungent gas smell and a sharp, energetic high. Cinderella 99, often called C99, is a compact sativa leaning plant from Jack Herer and Shiva Skunk lines, prized for its pineapple and grapefruit aroma and fast flowering. A less common listing replaces C99 with Pure Kush, which may explain why some plants grow broader and calmer.

The name joins the “Sour” from Sour Diesel with the tart green apple aroma that sets this strain apart. It is also known as Sour Apple Diesel. Despite two sativa leaning parents, most listings rate the hybrid indica dominant, and in practice the effect is balanced to calm. It has since become a parent itself: Apple Fritter, one of the best known dessert strains of recent years, comes from Sour Apple crossed with Animal Cookies, and Alien Sour Apple is another descendant.

Sour Apple strain effects and experience

Sour Apple starts quickly with a clean, cheerful head lift that many people describe as giggly and tingly. The Sour Diesel influence keeps the mind clear for the first stretch, which suits a hike, a chore list or an afternoon with friends.

After about forty minutes the body joins in. Muscles loosen, the pace slows, and a calm, comfortable feeling sets in without the heavy fog of a pure indica. At 16% to 24% THC it is moderate to strong, and a larger dose late in the day can lead to a lazy evening on the couch. It is one of the more versatile strains in this flavour family.

Sour Apple flavour, aroma and appearance

The aroma is crisp and sour: green apple skin, apple candy, lemon and a sweet note like baked apple filling, all resting on a clean diesel base. When you break a bud, the fuel jumps forward and a faint skunky musk appears. The smoke tastes of tart apple and citrus on the inhale and finishes with diesel and a cool, minty touch. Myrcene, caryophyllene, pinene and limonene are the main terpenes, which explains the mix of fruit, spice and fresh pine.

Buds are medium sized and moderately dense, a bright lime green with orange pistils and a thick layer of frost. They are more conical than round, with the occasional light purple tinge in a cold finish. The plant itself is vigorous, with medium width leaves and good branching.

Growing Sour Apple in Canada

Indoors

Sour Apple is a fast, cooperative grower. It stretches around 1.7 to 2 times, so a three to four week veg and a flip at 40 to 50 cm gives a finished plant of 100 to 150 cm. It also does well in a sea of green: several small plants flipped after just two weeks of veg can fill a tent quickly and finish in under nine weeks. Keep temperatures between 21 and 27 degrees, and humidity around 50% in early bloom, falling to 45% for the last three weeks. It handles a medium feed well. Most plants are ready between day 49 and day 63, with Cinderella 99 leaning phenotypes at the faster end.

Outdoors, by region

Sour Apple is an excellent candidate for outdoor gardens across southern Canada. In the Okanagan and the Annapolis Valley, a transplant in the last week of May is often ready in the last week of September. In southern Ontario, including the Niagara and Norfolk regions, and in the St. Lawrence Valley, expect a late September to early October finish. Coastal BC growers should plan for early October and keep a rain cover handy. On the Prairies, start seeds indoors in mid April and plant out in late May; the quicker phenotypes often finish before the first heavy frost, and the airy, conical buds dry well after wet weather. Taller outdoor plants can reach 200 to 250 cm, so leave space. Our fast flowering seeds guide lists other strains for short seasons.

Height and training

Because of its stretch, Sour Apple benefits from topping once or twice and from a screen. Bend the main stem early and spread the side branches for an even canopy; this keeps the plant manageable indoors and evens out bud size. Outdoors, a simple tomato cage or bamboo stakes help support the colas in the final weeks.

Flowering and harvest cues

Watch for swelling calyxes from week six and check the trichomes from day 49. Cloudy with a few amber heads gives the bright, balanced effect most people want; letting 15% turn amber makes the finish heavier. Dry for 10 to 12 days at about 60% humidity and 18 degrees. The tart apple aroma is best after a two week cure, and it keeps well when jars are stored cool and dark.

Sour Apple yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, a well trained canopy produces 400 to 550 g/m², and a sea of green setup can match that with a shorter overall cycle. Outdoors, a full season plant in a large pot or in the ground returns 500 to 700 g. For a strain that can finish in seven to nine weeks, that is a strong return, and the buds are easy to trim.

Who Sour Apple is for, and who should pick something else

Grow Sour Apple if you want a quick finishing plant for a short Canadian season, love tart fruit and diesel flavours, or want to see where Apple Fritter came from. A pack of Sour Apple feminized seeds is also a good fit for growers trying a sea of green for the first time.

Pick something else if you want a heavy sleepy indica, a very compact plant for a tiny tent, or a purely sweet dessert profile without any fuel.

How Sour Apple compares

Sour Diesel, one parent, is gassier, taller and much more energetic. Cinderella 99, the other, brings tropical fruit and a fast finish on a smaller plant. Apple Fritter, its best known child, adds Animal Cookies sweetness and more potency. Green Apple Pie is another apple scented option with a softer, sweeter flavour. Among our indica feminized seeds, Sour Apple is one of the brightest and quickest choices.

Frequently asked questions about Sour Apple

Is Sour Apple indica or sativa?

What strains make Sour Apple?

What does Sour Apple taste like?

Sour Apple tastes like tart green apple and apple candy, with lemon on the inhale and a clean diesel finish. Many people also notice a cool, minty note on the exhale. The apple aroma is strongest after a two week cure.

How long does Sour Apple take to flower?
