Afternoon Delight Feminized at a glance: Afternoon Delight is a balanced hybrid that flowers in 8 to 9 weeks, tests 18% to 25% THC, grows 80 to 130 cm indoors and yields 400 to 500 g/m² of resinous, orange-haired buds that smell of tangerine, sweet tropical fruit and pine with a light diesel edge.
Long June days, a September harvest, and a parcel that never sees customs
Afternoon Delight wants what a Canadian summer gives freely: long June light for growth and an early autumn finish before the weather turns. The seeds are already here. We ship them from our Vancouver, BC seed bank by domestic post, in a plain envelope, and they reach Calgary, Sudbury, Quebec City or Charlottetown in 3 to 7 business days without passing through customs. Each lot is viability tested before it goes on sale, every pack is covered by our 80% germination guarantee, and 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free.
Where Afternoon Delight comes from
Afternoon Delight is less a single family tree than a name that several breeders liked. The best known modern cut, often sold as Afternoon Delight #4, crosses GMO with Trophy Wife and lands close to 50/50. An older line pairs Banana and Schrom with Tangie for a brighter, citrus-led sativa lean, and another crosses Mandarin Sunset with Purple Punch for a sweeter, berry-tinted indica side. A separate #7 phenotype circulates on dispensary menus with an orange and creamy banana profile.
What ties the versions together is the purpose in the name. Afternoon Delight was always meant for the hours after lunch and before dinner: relaxing enough to take the edge off a long day, light enough that the evening is still yours. Our feminized seeds grow as a balanced hybrid with a citrus-forward nose; a few plants lean toward the fuel or the berry versions, which is worth knowing before you choose a keeper.
Afternoon Delight strain effects and experience
The onset is gentle and even. A clear, happy head buzz arrives first, often with a creative or chatty streak, and a mild body ease follows within about twenty minutes. Neither side dominates, which is the point: most people stay focused enough for a walk, a hobby or a conversation, and the body feels loose rather than heavy.
At 18% to 25% THC it is a mid to high strength strain. Larger sessions tip toward couch time, especially with the GMO-leaning version, so treat a modest amount as the right dose for its namesake hour.
Afternoon Delight flavour, aroma and appearance
The jar opens on tangerine and sweet citrus, then tropical fruit and banana cream, with pine and a faint skunky diesel underneath. The smoke tastes of orange peel and sweet pine, with a peppery exhale. Myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene are the consistent terpenes across versions, with smaller amounts of linalool, ocimene and humulene adding a floral, almost herbal lift.
Buds are medium sized and somewhat lumpy, bright neon green with bold orange pistils and a heavy coat of resin. Plants carrying Purple Punch can show purple on the sugar leaves late in bloom, especially after a few cold nights.
Growing Afternoon Delight in Canada
Indoors
Afternoon Delight is a cooperative indoor plant. It stretches a moderate 30% to 50% after the flip, so a four week veg and a flip around 50 cm finish at 80 to 130 cm. Run days at 23 to 27 degrees, feed at moderate strength, and drop night temperatures to 16 to 18 degrees in the last two weeks to tighten the buds and sharpen the citrus. Humidity under 50% in late bloom is enough for this strain; the buds are dense but not rock hard. Flowering takes 56 to 63 days.
Outdoors, by region
With an 8 to 9 week bloom, Afternoon Delight finishes outdoors across most of southern Canada. In BC’s Interior and the Kootenays it comes down in the last week of September; on the coast, early October. Southern and eastern Ontario, the Eastern Townships and the Saint John River valley in New Brunswick bring it in around the first week of October from a late May planting. In Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, start seeds indoors in mid April under a light, harden them off through May and plant out once frost risk passes; a late September harvest is realistic, and a cold frame or row cover on the odd frosty night buys extra days. Our outdoor cultivation guide covers soil prep and transplant timing.
Height and training
Topping once and a few weeks of low stress training produce an even, wide canopy of eight to ten tops. It responds well to a scrog net, which keeps the moderate stretch under control in a short tent. Remove large fan leaves that shade bud sites around day 21 of flower, but do not strip the plant bare; it uses its foliage well.
Flowering and harvest cues
Pistils turn orange and pull in from around day 50. For the bright, functional effect the strain is named for, harvest when trichomes are mostly cloudy with only a trace of amber, usually around day 56 to 60. Waiting until 15% amber gives a heavier, more relaxing result. Dry for 10 to 12 days at 18 to 20 degrees, then cure for at least two weeks; the citrus fades fast if the dry room runs warm.
Afternoon Delight yield indoors and outdoors
A trained indoor canopy gives 400 to 500 g/m². Outdoors, a plant in a 50 litre pot or good garden soil yields 450 to 650 g dried in a full southern Canadian season, and slightly less on the Prairies. It is a solid mid-range producer that finishes reliably, which matters more in Canada than a huge yield that arrives after the first frost.
Who Afternoon Delight is for, and who should pick something else
Grow Afternoon Delight if you want a balanced, functional strain for after work or weekend afternoons, if you garden outdoors almost anywhere in southern Canada, or if you like citrus and tropical flavours more than gas or dessert.
Look elsewhere if you want a bedtime strain, where a heavy indica such as Bubba Kush does the job better, or if you want a strain with one fixed, documented lineage and identical plants from every seed.
How Afternoon Delight compares
Modified Grapes shares the GMO and Purple Punch side of the family tree but lands heavier, sweeter and later in the day. Super Boof is the closest match in feel, another balanced citrus hybrid with an easy daytime start. For a more energetic citrus pick, Tropicana Cookies leans sativa. Compare more balanced options in our hybrid feminized seeds.
Frequently asked questions about Afternoon Delight
Is Afternoon Delight indica or sativa?
Afternoon Delight is a balanced hybrid, close to 50/50. Some versions lean slightly sativa and others slightly indica, but the effect is usually an even mix of a happy, clear head and a relaxed body, which suits the late afternoon the name refers to.
What are the genetics of Afternoon Delight?
Several crosses share the name. The best known modern cut, Afternoon Delight #4, is GMO x Trophy Wife; other versions combine Banana, Schrom and Tangie, or Mandarin Sunset and Purple Punch. All of them share a citrus-forward aroma and a balanced effect.
How strong is Afternoon Delight strain?
Afternoon Delight usually tests between 18% and 25% THC with CBD under 1%. That is mid to high strength. A modest session stays functional, while a larger one, especially from the GMO-leaning version, moves toward couch-lock.
Can you grow Afternoon Delight outdoors in Canada?
Yes, across most of southern Canada. It flowers in 8 to 9 weeks and finishes in late September or early October. Prairie growers should start seeds indoors in mid April and plant out after the last frost, with a cover ready for cold September nights.
Why Afternoon Delight suits growers who smoke after work, not before bed
Most seed orders lean toward evening indicas, and Afternoon Delight fills the gap before that. Add it to a 10 or 25 pack order and the buy one get one free offer lets the second pack be any strain of the same size, so the after-work jar and the bedtime jar arrive together. Orders over $200 ship free, and orders above $420 earn 10 extra seeds.
MJ Seeds Canada has operated from Vancouver, BC since 2009. Parcels go out in plain, unbranded packaging and arrive in 3 to 7 business days, and the $30 tracked and insured option covers one reshipment if something goes wrong in transit. Every pack is protected by our 80% germination guarantee when you follow the cup of water and paper towel steps in our germination guide.
