Named for the frost, and in your mailbox before the real frost arrives
Most people who search for Sub Zero find it on a dispensary menu south of the border, and importing seeds from there means a customs declaration and a gamble. Ours are already sitting in our Vancouver, BC seed bank. An order goes out in plain packaging as soon as payment clears and reaches Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa or Fredericton in 3 to 7 business days with no border in between. Each lot is germination tested in Vancouver before it is packed and backed by our 80% germination guarantee, and the 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free.
Where Sub Zero comes from
Sub Zero strain is the child of two of the most talked about hybrids of the past few years. On one side is Super Boof, the Black Cherry Punch and Tropicana Cookies cross famous for its orange candy and cherry nose; on the other is Oreoz, the Cookies and Cream and Secret Weapon hybrid that brings near black buds, cocoa and a thick resin coat. The pairing surfaced in the early 2020s and spread through small craft growers before it reached legal menus, which is why you will see it written as Sub Zero, Sub-Zero and Subzero.
A word of caution on the name. More than one cultivar has been sold as Sub Zero over the years, so the lineage printed on a menu is not always the same. The version we stock is the Super Boof x Oreoz line, an indica leaning plant with the fruit of one parent and the dark, frosty structure of the other. The name refers to that frost: by week seven the calyxes look dipped in sugar.
Sub Zero strain effects and experience
Sub Zero opens with a quick, cheerful lift that most people credit to the Super Boof side. Conversation comes easily, music sounds a little better and the mood brightens within the first ten minutes. Over the next hour the Oreoz half takes the wheel: the shoulders loosen, the body gets warm and heavy, and the evening slows to a comfortable pace without an instant crash.
With THC from 22% to 28%, it is a strong strain, and the relaxed second act arrives later than many expect. A single small session, followed by a forty minute wait, is the honest way to find your dose.
Sub Zero flavour, aroma and appearance
Grind a cured bud and orange crush soda hits first, followed quickly by black cherry and a bready, chocolate cookie note that gets stronger as the jar breathes. Underneath sits a cool layer of pine and forest floor, plus a faint diesel edge that shows up mostly in the exhale. Lab panels on this line tend to show caryophyllene, limonene and linalool on top with myrcene behind, which fits the pepper, citrus and soft floral mix.
The buds are medium to large, chunky rather than spear shaped, and so heavily frosted that they read as pale grey-green from across a room. Lavender and plum tones creep into the sugar leaves when nights run cool, and short, rusty pistils sit tucked under the resin.
Growing Sub Zero in Canada
Indoors
Sub Zero behaves well in a tent if you respect its two habits: a moderate stretch of about 1.5 times after the flip, and dense, resin-packed colas that need dry air late in bloom. Veg for four to five weeks and flip at around 45 cm to finish between 90 and 140 cm. Hold daytime temperatures at 23 to 27 degrees and let nights fall four to six degrees lower in the final three weeks if you want the purple. It is a medium feeder; a light calcium and magnesium boost under LED from the third week of flower keeps the fan leaves green to the end. From day 42 onward, aim for 42% to 48% relative humidity and keep air moving under the canopy, a point covered in our guide to managing humidity in cannabis grows.
Outdoors, by region
Plan on 60 to 70 days of bloom, so in an open garden Sub Zero suits only the gentlest Canadian autumns. On the south coast of British Columbia, from Victoria to the Fraser Valley, raise seedlings indoors from mid April, move them out once nights stay above 10 degrees in late May, and expect to harvest between the first and third week of October, ideally under clear plastic once the rains return. In Essex, Kent and the Niagara Peninsula it can finish around the same time in a dry year. In the Interior, on the Prairies, across Quebec and in the Atlantic provinces, a greenhouse or an indoor tent is the safer choice, since a cold, wet October will reach the colas before they ripen.
Height and training
The plant naturally forms a central cola with strong, evenly spaced side arms, so a single topping at the fifth node followed by gentle tie-downs works well. Aim for eight to twelve tops at equal height under one trellis net. Thin the interior leaves once at the end of the stretch and again around day 40 so light and air reach the middle of the plant; the frosty buds are dense enough that a shaded, damp core is the most likely trouble spot.
Flowering and harvest cues
Sub Zero frosts up early, so the plant often looks ready around day 50, two weeks before it really is. Watch the trichome heads instead of the white coating: from day 58, check the top colas with a jeweller’s loupe and cut when most heads are milky with about a tenth turning amber. A slow hang of 10 to 14 days at roughly 60% humidity and 18 degrees, followed by a three week jar cure, is what brings the orange and cookie notes back in front of the pine.
Sub Zero yield indoors and outdoors
In a trained indoor canopy, Sub Zero gives 450 to 550 g/m² of heavy, low-leaf buds that trim quickly. Outdoors on the BC coast, a full-season plant in a 60 to 100 litre container typically lands between 500 and 800 g dried. The trichome load is what sets it apart: dry sift and ice water hash makers report strong returns from both flower and trim, so keep the sugar leaves.
Who Sub Zero is for, and who should pick something else
Choose Sub Zero if you like the fruit of Super Boof but want a heavier, frostier evening plant, if you make hash, or if your tent is a showroom and bag appeal matters as much as weight. It rewards a grower who can watch humidity through the last month.
Look elsewhere if you need an outdoor plant for a short northern season, if you want a clear-headed daytime strain, or if this is your very first grow. In that last case, Super Boof itself is faster and more forgiving while sharing much of the same flavour.
How Sub Zero compares
Against Super Boof, Sub Zero is darker, frostier and more relaxing, trading a little of the orange for chocolate and pine. Against Oreoz, it is brighter and fruitier, with a friendlier start and slightly shorter bloom. Cookies and Cream, the grandparent on the Oreoz side, is gentler and more balanced if you want the cookie flavour without as much weight. Frequently asked questions about Sub Zero
What is Sub Zero strain a cross of?
Sub Zero is a cross of Super Boof and Oreoz. Super Boof brings the orange candy and cherry flavour, while Oreoz adds the chocolate cookie notes, the dark colour and the heavy frost. Other unrelated cuts have used the same name, so check the lineage when you buy.
Is Sub Zero indica or sativa?
Sub Zero is an indica leaning hybrid, about 60% indica and 40% sativa. The first part of the high is bright and sociable, then it settles into warm body relaxation over the following hour, which makes it best suited to evenings.
How much THC is in Sub Zero?
Sub Zero usually tests between 22% and 28% THC, with CBD under 0.5%. That is strong by any standard. The relaxing side builds slowly, so wait at least half an hour before deciding whether you need more.
How long does Sub Zero take to flower?
Sub Zero flowers in 9 to 10 weeks indoors, roughly 60 to 70 days after the switch to 12 hours of light. Outdoors on the BC coast or in southern Ontario it finishes in early to mid October; colder regions should grow it in a greenhouse or tent.
