Purple Runtz is happy in a basement tent in Edmonton or a balcony garden in Victoria, as long as late-season nights cool off. The seeds are already sitting in our Vancouver, BC seed bank. They leave in plain packaging, travel by domestic post with no border crossing and arrive in 3 to 7 business days in every province and territory. Every 10 and 25 seed pack is buy one get one free, which makes a two-strain Runtz comparison easy to set up.
Where Purple Runtz comes from
Purple Runtz strain grew out of the Runtz craze in California, where the original Zkittlez and Gelato #33 cross became one of the most requested strains of the late 2010s. Purple Runtz is usually described as a purple selection from that same pairing, chosen from seed for its colour and its darker grape flavour. Some cuts sold under the name carry Purple Punch in the background instead, which adds a grape and blueberry muffin note and pushes the plant a little further toward indica.
The practical takeaway is that Purple Runtz sits between two well known parents: the candy sweetness of Zkittlez and the creamy body of Gelato 33, with extra anthocyanin, the pigment behind its colour. Phenotypes vary, and a ten pack will usually show both lighter, fruitier plants and darker, earthier ones.
Purple Runtz strain effects and experience
The first wave is a soft, happy euphoria that settles in behind the eyes, with a tingle across the scalp and hands. It does not race the way some Runtz phenotypes do; instead the mood lifts while the body loosens, and conversation becomes easy and unhurried. After an hour the relaxation deepens, and on a big session it ends in a comfortable, sleepy calm.
THC usually runs between 19% and 26%. Users mention dry mouth most often, and occasionally a brief dizzy moment when standing up quickly after a heavy session.
Purple Runtz flavour, aroma and appearance
Grape candy leads the nose, followed by mixed berries and a light tropical note from the Zkittlez side. Grinding the bud brings out lavender, cream and a little earth. On the exhale it tastes sweet and smooth, like grape soda with a vanilla finish, and some phenotypes pick up a gassy edge in the aftertaste. Caryophyllene, limonene and linalool are the terpenes most often reported, which fits the mix of pepper, citrus and floral notes.
Colour is the point of the strain. Buds start lime green and, in the last three weeks, turn plum, violet and sometimes almost black, set off by orange pistils and a thick white frost. The colour shows best when night temperatures fall 8 to 10 degrees below the daytime high.
Growing Purple Runtz in Canada
Indoors
Runtz genetics have a reputation for being a little fussy, and Purple Runtz inherits some of that. Keep the feed moderate, because the leaf tips burn easily, and hold the pH between 6.0 and 6.5 in soil. Veg for four weeks, flip at around 35 to 40 cm and expect a finished height of 80 to 130 cm. During the day, 22 to 26 degrees works well; in the final two weeks, let the lights-off temperature drop to 16 or 17 degrees to bring out the purple. Expect harvest somewhere between day 56 and day 63. If this is your first time in a tent, our indoor growing guide for Canada covers the basic setup.
Outdoors, by region
An 8 to 9 week flowering time makes Purple Runtz workable outdoors in most of Canada. On the BC coast and in southern Ontario, it is ready in late September. Interior BC, the Ottawa Valley and the St. Lawrence lowlands usually harvest in the first week of October, and the cold nights there produce the deepest colour. On the Prairies, start indoors in mid April, plant out after the last frost and choose the warmest corner of the yard; a plant in Winnipeg or Regina finishes in early October in a typical year. Watch the forecast closely in late September, as a hard frost of minus three or lower will damage the buds.
Height and training
The plant is compact with moderate side branching. Top it once and use low stress training to open the centre, aiming for six to eight even tops. Avoid heavy defoliation; Runtz plants recover slowly from big stress. A light leaf cleanup in week three of flower is enough.
Flowering and harvest cues
The purple usually arrives in weeks six and seven, before the trichomes are ready, so do not take colour as the sign to cut. Check trichomes from day 54. Mostly cloudy with 10% amber keeps the euphoric side; 20% amber leans heavier. Dry slowly for 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity and cure for three weeks to let the grape and cream notes settle.
Purple Runtz yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, expect 350 to 500 g/m² from a trained canopy. Purple Runtz is grown for colour and flavour more than weight. Outdoors, a well fed plant in a sunny spot gives 450 to 700 g, with the higher end coming from long BC and Ontario seasons. Prairie plants tend to land at the lower end but often show the strongest colour.
Who Purple Runtz is for, and who should pick something else
Choose Purple Runtz feminized seeds if you want the most colourful jar on the shelf, if grape candy is your favourite flavour, or if you want a calm, sociable evening strain that does not knock you flat right away.
Choose something else if you want maximum yield or if you are a first-time grower who tends to overfeed. For a sharper, more classic Runtz high, the original Runtz is the reference point.
How Purple Runtz compares
Runtz itself is lighter in colour, fruitier and a little more energetic. Blue Runtz trades grape for blueberry and turns a cooler shade of blue-violet. Purple Punch, which appears in some Purple Runtz cuts, is heavier, sweeter and more sedating. Browse more balanced crosses in our hybrid feminized seeds range.
Frequently asked questions about Purple Runtz
Is Purple Runtz indica or sativa?
Purple Runtz is a balanced hybrid that leans slightly indica, usually estimated between 50/50 and 60/40. It starts with a soft, happy euphoria and gradually relaxes the body, so most people use it in the afternoon or evening rather than first thing in the morning.
What is the difference between Runtz and Purple Runtz?
Purple Runtz is a purple selection of the Runtz family, chosen for its violet colour and darker grape flavour. Standard Runtz is lighter green, fruitier and a bit more energetic. Some Purple Runtz cuts also carry Purple Punch genetics, which makes them sweeter and heavier.
Why is Purple Runtz purple?
Purple Runtz carries high levels of anthocyanin, the pigment that makes blueberries and red cabbage purple. The colour appears in the last three weeks of flower and gets deeper when night temperatures drop 8 to 10 degrees below the daytime high.
How long does Purple Runtz take to flower?
Purple Runtz flowers in 8 to 9 weeks, or about 56 to 63 days, indoors. Outdoors in Canada it finishes from late September on the coast to early October on the Prairies, provided Prairie plants get an April indoor start.
