AK-47 was released in 1992, a period when most commercial strains were either pure indica from Afghanistan or long-flowering sativas from the tropics. Its makers blended Colombian, Mexican and Thai sativas with an Afghani indica to get tropical energy on a plant that finished in about two months. It went on to win a string of cup awards through the 1990s and early 2000s and has been a staple of seed catalogues ever since.
The name promised aggression, but the strain is known for the opposite: a calm, even high. Genetically it is about 65% sativa, and it grows like a medium, compact hybrid rather than a lanky tropical plant, which is a large part of why it became a go-to for first-time growers.
AK-47 works fast. Within a couple of minutes there is a clear, cheerful lift and a relaxed, easy mood, and it stays mellow rather than racy. You remain alert and able to talk, read or potter around the house. The effect is long lasting, often holding for two to three hours, with a light body calm that grows gradually toward the end.
With 18% to 22% THC it is moderate by modern standards and strong compared with what most people grew in the 1990s. It is one of the more predictable strains for someone returning to cannabis after a long break.
The aroma is earthy and woody, with sandalwood, a peppery spice and a faint skunk note. The taste is sweeter and more floral than the smell suggests, with a soft woody finish. Myrcene, caryophyllene and pinene make up most of the terpene profile, which accounts for the combination of earth, spice and a light pine freshness.
The buds are compact and medium sized, dark green with reddish-orange pistils and a shiny coat of trichomes. In warm rooms they grow a little looser and airier; in a cooler finish they tighten up and get denser, which is worth knowing when you set your night temperatures.
AK-47 is among the easiest plants in the catalogue. A three to four week veg and a flip at 40 to 50 cm gives a final height of 80 to 140 cm, depending on phenotype. It thrives in soil or hydro, at 21 to 26 degrees, and tolerates small feeding mistakes without much complaint. Flowering takes 53 to 63 days. The odour picks up from week four and can be noticeable in shared buildings, so a carbon filter is sensible. Keep humidity below 50% in the last three weeks, and run nights a few degrees cooler to firm up the buds.
Its 8 to 9 week bloom and hardy nature make AK-47 one of the best outdoor strains for most of Canada. On the BC coast and in the Okanagan, plant out in late May for a harvest in the last week of September. In southern Ontario and the St. Lawrence Valley it finishes in late September or the first days of October. The Maritimes and Newfoundland growers should pick the sunniest, most sheltered spot available and expect early October. On the Prairies, start seeds indoors in early April and move plants out after the last frost; AK-47 usually finishes by late September, before the first hard freeze. Top once at the fourth or fifth node and spread the branches with low stress training. AK-47 has good lateral branching and forms an even canopy with little effort. A single trellis net at the flip helps support the colas. Remove small lower growth at the switch to flower to focus the plant on the main bud sites.
The pistils turn reddish-orange from around day 45. Check trichomes from day 53 and harvest when most are cloudy with a few amber, typically day 56 to 63; earlier cuts keep the effect brighter. Dry for 10 to 12 days at 60% humidity and 18 to 20 degrees, then cure for at least two weeks for the sandalwood and floral notes to come through.
Indoors, AK-47 returns 350 to 500 g/m² from a trained canopy, a steady, repeatable number rather than a record. Outdoors, a plant in a 40 to 60 litre pot or in the ground gives 400 to 550 g in a full season, and Prairie plants with a shorter season still produce 300 to 400 g. Previous sessions germinated better, about 70% on these, 50% grew well, the rest died or nearly did. Half very weak. Flipped early – 4weeks since they were so tall, but just kept shooting up. These are real challenges for indoor hydroponics. About ready to harvest, excellent buds, very sweet, yield looks good, they finally quit growing! I’m hoping this year the ladies do even better because I’m more prepared and I’ve switched to high-strength LED lights. If the plants do better, they will be an *** kicker! Don’t get me wrong, the plants from last year were awesome, but I hope to improve!

My AK 47 Fem came out right from the start like a freak of nature blowing up in the branch department then after 2 months of growing my buds were swollen fat at right about an oz per cola. I did the toping method at the end did the split the stock at last week of budding for maximum potency and highly of buds it was the tastiest potent as I have ever had don’t think I ever got to try the way is supposed to be like until now thank you so much. I will purchase it again and make it better next time!

Can’t wait till harvest time! We bought these late in 2020, and didn’t plant them till April of this year – so wasn’t expecting all of the seeds to take, but they did! We soaked them for almost a week in water, and then put them into potting soil in glass jars in yogurt cups (so I could check easily if the roots were getting crazy) until they were big enough to go into bigger pots. We started them on a window sill before we had our light/tent set up, and a few of them did do some light stretching. Not all popped up at once, and now they big flowering plants it’s still clear which ones sprouted first – but the smaller ones are still holding their own!

I purchased 5 seeds without any problems at all. I planted it indoors and I’ve been growing it successfully. Very healthy, very green, full of new buds, and appropriately 3.5 feet tall! I still have the remaining 2 seeds!! This was my very 1st time attempting a grow and I am so satisfied! I can’t wait to see the other seeds to grows and try them together. I will give my best so that they grow fast, looking good, and maybe a month or so away from the flowering stage. Water and feed on a schedule, increasing water amounts as plants increase in size!
