Bubba Kush strain appeared in the late 1990s in the United States, when an OG Kush plant pollinated an indica whose identity was never recorded. The most repeated version of the story points to a Northern Lights phenotype, but it has never been confirmed. It is also sold as BK, Bubba, and Bubba OG Kush.
What has been consistent is the plant. Bubba Kush is heavily indica at roughly 80/20, short and stocky with tight internodes, broad fan leaves and thick petioles, and it produces stubby, rock-hard buds rather than long colas. It became a benchmark for what an evening indica should feel like at a time when nobody was chasing 30% test results, and it still measures up.
The opening is a warm mental calm rather than a rush: about fifteen minutes of easing mood with a mild euphoria, and then the body takes over completely. It is heavy, slow and long lasting, the kind of effect that arrives in the shoulders and makes standing up feel like a decision. Most sessions finish with sleep, and it is a poor match for anything that needs coordination.
The number is 16% to 22% THC, which is modest now, and it consistently feels stronger than that. Part of it is the terpene mix and part of it is the sheer duration, which runs to several hours.
The aroma is earthy and sweet with a distinct coffee note, backed by dark chocolate, tree nuts and a hashy depth from the Kush side. The coffee and chocolate are not immediate either: they build during a long cure, and four to eight weeks in the jar is where this strain separates itself from a rushed one. The smoke is thick and smooth, sweet and nutty on the inhale, earthy and hash-like on the exhale.
The buds are the giveaway: small to medium, extremely dense, light to olive green with rust-orange hairs and broad, thick sugar leaves, packed onto short branches. Growers often describe the shape of the plant as a small Christmas tree.
This is one of the easiest photoperiod plants in the catalogue and a common first grow. Veg four to five weeks, because the stretch is a mild 1.3 to 1.5 times and an under-vegged plant finishes very small; even so it lands at 70 to 110 cm. It is a moderate feeder with strong apical dominance, so topping early evens out the canopy and prevents one branch taking everything. Room at 21 to 27 degrees. The one real demand is airflow at the end: the buds are dense enough to hide a problem, so thin the leaves below the canopy, hold humidity at 45% or under from week five, and keep a fan moving through the plant. Flower runs 56 to 63 days.
An 8 to 9 week flower and a short frame make Bubba Kush workable almost everywhere in the country. Coastal BC, the Okanagan and southern Ontario finish in the last days of September or the first days of October. Quebec and the Maritimes manage the same window in a sunny, sheltered position, and the low height makes the plant easy to cover on a wet night. Prairie growers should start seeds indoors in April and plant out in late May for a late September harvest. Because it stays under 150 cm outdoors, it is also one of the few plants here that genuinely works in a large balcony pot.
Top at the fourth node and use light low stress training to open the bush. It does not need a screen or staking; the branches carry the weight on their own. What it does need is pruning underneath, because the tight internodes and broad leaves shade out the lower bud sites and leave you with popcorn. Strip the bottom quarter at the flip and thin again at week four.
Pistils go rust orange early and the buds harden before they are ripe, so check trichomes from day 54 rather than trusting the look. Cloudy with 10% amber, usually day 58 to 63, is the classic version of this strain, and pushing further only adds sedation. Dry for 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity and then cure properly: this is the strain where a long cure pays the most, and the coffee and chocolate notes that people buy it for will not be there at two weeks.
Indoors, expect 350 to 450 g/m² from a trained canopy. Bubba Kush has never been a heavy yielder and the older claims of 500 to 600 g/m² are optimistic for a plant this short; what you get instead is very dense flower with almost no airy filler, so the jar weight holds up better than the numbers suggest. I have seen this plant grown indoors with a month of vegetation and what I highlight most of this variety are its dense buds, I think it is the densest thing I have ever seen, the plant is ground and above all stable. Three seeds, three crops under the same conditions. In form, density, effect, taste, and production are almost identical. Excellent for insomnia and anxiety problems, the little aroma when burned or vaporized. Its effect goes from euphoria to maximum relaxation. Hello, this is a variety that I highly recommend for growers who use cannabis as natural medicine. I suffer from epilepsy, insomnia and I am drug-resistant (anti-epileptics have never worked and sleeping pills no longer work on me). So I had to turn to cannabis when a doctor told me that my seizures could kill me or severely damage my brain since I use cannabis before bed the seizures have completely disappeared and I do almost no more sleepless nights and this variety is especially suitable for therapeutic use especially for insomnia and pain, against the epileptic all varieties work. Germination! In an environment with 65% or 65% controlled humidity and a temperature of 24oC, the seeds germinated completely in 3 days, a solid seedling and completely opened in 3 days. No loss on three seeds. all 3 seeds sprouted at the same time 🙂 Growth. I observed on his three young inches a difference on the phenotype, but very vigorous, with a growth rate of the roots at the top.
