A daytime sativa for Canadian summers, sent from a seed bank that has been here since 2009
Jack Herer has been a favourite with Canadian growers since the 1990s, and it still makes sense here: a sativa that finishes in 8 to 10 weeks, strong enough for the long days and cool nights of a coastal summer. Our seeds are already in the country, packed in our Vancouver, BC seed bank and shipped domestically in plain packaging to every province, usually in 3 to 7 business days. Each batch is viability tested first, the 80% germination guarantee applies, and every 10 and 25 seed pack is buy one get one free.
Where Jack Herer comes from
Jack Herer was bred in the Netherlands in the mid 1990s by crossing a Haze with Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk. The aim was to combine the soaring, clear effect of a Haze with the speed, resin and structure of the Northern Lights and Skunk lines, and it worked: the strain collected a long list of Cannabis Cup awards and became a reference sativa.
It is named after Jack Herer, the American activist whose 1985 book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, made the case for hemp and cannabis legalisation and influenced a generation of reformers. Because the name is famous, it has been attached to many look-alike crosses over the years. The line we stock follows the classic Haze, Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk recipe.
Jack Herer strain effects and experience
Jack Herer is a daytime strain. The onset is quick and clear, with a bright, alert mood, sharper focus and a creative, talkative edge. The body stays light and relaxed rather than heavy, which is why people use it for walks, chores, music and creative work. The effect usually lasts two to three hours and tapers off gently without much sleepiness.
THC typically sits between 17% and 23%. It is strong enough to be noticeable, but the clear, uplifting nature makes it very different from a sedating indica. People sensitive to racy sativas should start with a small amount.
Jack Herer flavour, aroma and appearance
The aroma is fresh pine, sharp spice and a squeeze of citrus, with a light earthy and woody background. The smoke is crisp and clean, pine and pepper on the inhale, lemon and herbs on the exhale. The dominant terpene is terpinolene, which is unusual among popular strains, supported by caryophyllene and pinene. That combination gives Jack Herer its unmistakable forest and spice character.
The buds are medium sized and somewhat conical, light green with rusty orange pistils and a sparkling coat of trichomes. The Northern Lights side makes them denser than a pure Haze.
Growing Jack Herer in Canada
Indoors
Jack Herer is not hard to grow, but it is not as forgiving as an indica. It stretches around 1.8 to 2 times after the flip, so a two to three week veg is usually enough for a standard tent, finishing at 100 to 160 cm. It likes warm, steady temperatures of 22 to 27 degrees and a moderate feed; it is sensitive to heavy nitrogen in bloom. Phenotypes vary, with some finishing around day 56 and others needing up to day 70. Keep humidity under 50% in the last month to protect the resinous buds.
Outdoors, by region
With 8 to 10 weeks of flower, Jack Herer is best outdoors on the BC coast and in southern Ontario. In the Lower Mainland, the Gulf Islands and the Okanagan, plant out in late May and harvest in early to mid October. Niagara and the Lake Erie shoreline can bring it in during a warm autumn. In Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and on the Prairies, the finish is often too late for outdoor growing, so use a greenhouse or grow indoors. Our outdoor cultivation guide covers season planning.
Height and training
Top early and train the branches outward to manage the stretch. A scrog is ideal, keeping the canopy even and turning the long branches into several strong colas. Supercropping in the first two weeks of flower helps control height. Light defoliation improves airflow in the dense middle of the plant.
Flowering and harvest cues
Check trichomes from around day 56. Mostly cloudy with a few amber gives the brightest effect; waiting longer adds some body weight. Dry slowly for 10 to 14 days at around 60% humidity and 18 degrees, then cure for at least two weeks to bring out the pine and citrus.
Jack Herer yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, a trained canopy produces 400 to 500 g/m². Outdoors on the BC coast or in southern Ontario, a full-season plant gives 500 to 650 g. The resin content is high, and the flavour holds well through a long cure.
Phenotype matters more with Jack Herer than with most classics. The Haze leaning plants stretch further, flower closer to ten weeks and give the sharpest pine and spice with the most energetic effect. The Northern Lights and Skunk leaning plants stay shorter, finish nearer eight weeks, and trade a little of the clarity for heavier buds. Running a handful of Jack Herer seeds side by side and keeping a mother of the one you prefer is the best way to lock in the version you like.
Who Jack Herer is for, and who should pick something else
Grow Jack Herer if you want a classic, clear sativa for daytime use, if you love pine and spice flavours, or if you want a strain with real history. It suits growers with some experience who can manage a stretch.
Pick something else if you need a short, fast indica, or if you are growing outdoors on the Prairies. For a more powerful, longer-flowering haze, Super Silver Haze is the obvious next step.
How Jack Herer compares
Super Silver Haze uses a similar Skunk, Northern Lights and Haze mix, with a longer flower and more haze spice. Northern Lights, a parent, is fast, compact and indica. Jack Herer x Superskunk adds skunk weight and a shorter finish. Among our sativa feminized seeds, Jack Herer is the classic daytime pick.
