Where Fruity Pebbles comes from

Fruity Pebbles comes from a three-way California cross made in the mid 2000s. Green Ribbon, a sativa leaning hybrid, supplies energy, height and a sweet, lemony top note. Granddaddy Purple brings the grape and berry sweetness, the purple colour and much of the body effect. Tahoe Alien, a Tahoe OG and Alien Kush cross, adds OG structure, resin and a peppery kush undertone. Indoors

Fruity Pebbles is vigorous in veg and stretches 1.8 to 2 times after the flip, so the most common mistake is vegging too long. Two to three weeks from seed, or a flip at 40 to 50 cm, keeps it within 100 to 160 cm. It likes a warm room, 23 to 27 degrees, and a moderate feed. The spear-shaped colas dry better than round, dense buds, but humidity should still be held under 50% in the last month. Flower takes 56 to 63 days.

Outdoors, by region

With an 8 to 9 week bloom, Fruity Pebbles works outdoors in much of the country if you give it room. Around Kelowna, Victoria and Vancouver, as well as southern Ontario, plant out in late May and harvest in the last week of September to the first week of October. The Montreal region, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are realistic with a sheltered, sunny spot. On the Prairies, start indoors in April, transplant late May, and expect a late September finish; a greenhouse helps, and the plant’s height means staking against Prairie winds. Height and training

Height is the challenge. Top early, then use low stress training or a scrog to spread the plant sideways. Supercropping the tallest branches in the first week of flower is a good way to control the stretch without losing yield. Outdoors, plants can pass two metres, so stake or cage before bloom begins.

Flowering and harvest cues

From week seven, the calyxes swell and the colours intensify. Harvest when most trichomes are cloudy with a few amber, usually day 58 to 63. Dry for about 12 days at 60% humidity, then cure; the fruity cereal aroma blooms after two weeks in the jar.

Expect some variation in a pack. The Granddaddy Purple leaning plants are shorter, colour up earlier and smell more of grape, while the Green Ribbon leaning plants stretch more, stay greener and carry a brighter citrus note. Growing several seeds and keeping the one whose smell you like best is the traditional way to enjoy this strain, and a mother plant of a favourite keeper lets you repeat it.
