Where Gastro Pop comes from

Gastro Pop is a cross of Apples and Bananas, a fruity, gassy hybrid built on Platinum Cookies, Granddaddy Purple, Blue Power and Gelatti, and Grape Gas, which itself comes from Grape Pie and Jet Fuel Gelato. It appeared on the American West Coast around 2021 and was released as a set of numbered phenotypes; the #5 and #28 cuts became the best known, and #5 is the one most often seen on dispensary menus.

The name is a pun on “gastropod” and on grape soda pop. Most people take the first half as a nod to the appetite it brings on, and the second half is plain description: the smell is very close to a freshly opened can of grape soda. It is one of the strains that made grape and gas the flavour pairing of the decade.

Because Grape Pie sits one generation back on the Grape Gas side, Gastro Pop is effectively a grandchild of that purple classic, pushed toward higher potency and more fuel.

Growing Gastro Pop in Canada

Indoors

Gastro Pop grows as a medium, bushy plant with a stretch of 1.5 to 2 times after the flip. Veg for three to four weeks and flip at 40 to 50 cm to finish between 80 and 140 cm. It handles a moderate to strong feed in weeks three to six of bloom, but back off in the final fortnight so the fruit terpenes stay clean. Hold 22 to 27 degrees by day and lower humidity to about 45% from mid flower. Outdoors, by region

An 8 to 9 week bloom means Gastro Pop can finish outdoors across most of southern Canada. On the BC coast, in the Kootenays and in the Okanagan, plant out in late May and harvest in the last days of September or the first week of October. In southern Ontario and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, a late May transplant is usually ready by early October; give each plant a metre of space so the dense buds dry quickly after rain. On the Prairies, start indoors in April and move out in late May for a harvest by the end of September, with frost cloth nearby. In Atlantic Canada, a sunny, sheltered corner and good drainage matter more than anything else. Expect the aroma to reach the neighbours by late August.

Height and training

Top twice and spread the branches under a trellis net for an even canopy of eight to twelve tops. Gastro Pop branches freely, so clear the inside of the plant and the lowest third at the flip, then remove the big fan leaves that shade bud sites around day 21 of flower.

Flowering and harvest cues

Colour arrives early and can be misleading. Begin checking trichomes at day 54 and harvest when they are mostly cloudy with 10% to 20% amber; earlier keeps more of the giddy front end, later makes it heavier. Dry for 10 to 12 days at 60% humidity, then cure for at least two weeks. The grape soda note peaks around week three of the cure.

A well trained indoor canopy returns 400 to 550 g/m² of dense, heavy buds. Outdoors, a full-season plant gives 500 to 750 g dried in a warm year.
