The grape-leaning cousin of Runtz, without the cross-border shipping
Gruntz is mostly known from dispensary jars in California and Michigan, and Canadians who chase it from abroad face customs risk on top of the wait. Our feminized Gruntz seeds skip that. They leave our Vancouver, BC seed bank in plain, unbranded packaging and reach Victoria, Regina, Sudbury or Charlottetown in 3 to 7 business days by domestic post. Each lot is germination tested before it is packed and backed by our 80% germination guarantee, and the 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free with any other strain of the same size.
Where Gruntz comes from
Gruntz strain is a cross of Zkittlez and Gelato 33, two of the best known flavour strains of the 2010s. If that pairing sounds familiar, it should: Runtz also comes from Zkittlez and Gelato. Gruntz is a separate selection from that family, chosen for a grapier nose and a slightly heavier body, and the name is widely read as shorthand for a grape-leaning Runtz.
Because it spread first as a named cut on West Coast and Midwest menus, you will see a few listings that describe the parents only as Gelato and Zkittlez, without the number. The Gelato 33 version is the most common and the one this page describes.
Gruntz strain effects and experience
Gruntz opens with a tingly, lightly energetic lift, a clear and focused feeling that many people enjoy for conversation or a creative hobby. After about twenty minutes the Gelato 33 side spreads a warm, comfortable calm through the body, and from there it cruises: euphoric, settled and sociable for about two hours. It is balanced enough for an early evening and only becomes sleepy with a heavy dose.
At 22% to 28% THC, Gruntz is firmly in modern potency territory, but its gentle onset makes it one of the friendlier strong strains for people who dislike a racy start.
Gruntz flavour, aroma and appearance
The jar smells like grape soda and mixed fruit candy, with a sweet cream note underneath and just a hint of earthy gas when you break a bud. The smoke follows the same path: sugary grape and berry on the inhale, creamy, slightly herbal on the exhale. Caryophyllene, limonene and linalool usually lead, with some myrcene.
The buds are medium sized and dense, mint green with deep purple swirls and bright orange pistils, and they frost over heavily in the last three weeks. In a cool finish some phenotypes turn almost entirely violet, which makes Gruntz one of the most photogenic plants in a small tent.
Growing Gruntz in Canada
Indoors
Gruntz grows short and bushy with a stretch of roughly 1.5 times, so a four week veg and a flip at 40 to 50 cm gives a finished plant of 80 to 130 cm. It is sensitive to overwatering: let the top few centimetres of the pot dry before watering again, and use a free-draining mix with plenty of perlite or a fabric pot. Feed at a light to medium level; Zkittlez types show tip burn quickly. Keep days at 22 to 26 degrees and lower night temperatures in the last three weeks to bring out the purple.
Outdoors, by region
With an 8 to 9 week bloom, Gruntz fits most Canadian seasons. In southern BC, southern Ontario and the Eastern Townships, transplant in late May and harvest from the last week of September to the first days of October. In the Maritimes, plant in a raised bed or a large fabric pot so roots never sit wet after a rainy week, and harvest in early October. On the Prairies, start indoors in April and move outside after the late May frost date; the compact plant is easy to shelter in a garage on a cold night and should finish at the end of September. Avoid low, damp spots everywhere, since its roots dislike standing water.
Height and training
Top once and use low stress training to open the bush into six to eight even tops. Gruntz has short internodes and plenty of side shoots, so clearing the lowest growth at the flip saves energy for the main colas. A single net is plenty; the branches hold their buds well until the final week.
Flowering and harvest cues
Expect harvest between day 56 and 65. The colour change and the frosting both peak in the last ten days, so do not cut early. Look for mostly cloudy trichomes with a few amber heads. Dry slowly for 12 days at 60% humidity in a cool room, because the grape and candy terpenes are light and easily lost to warm air, then cure for at least two weeks.
Gruntz yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, 400 to 500 g/m² is typical from a trained canopy, and the dense buds trim quickly. Outdoors, a plant in a 40 to 60 litre pot gives 450 to 700 g dried in a good southern Canadian season, and Prairie plants with a shorter season still return 300 to 450 g. Gruntz is not grown for record weight; it is grown for the jar.
Who Gruntz is for, and who should pick something else
Gruntz feminized seeds are a good match for growers who love grape and candy flavours, want a strong but sociable effect, and have a small tent, a balcony or a short outdoor season. It is also a comfortable second grow for anyone who handled an easy hybrid the first time and is ready for a dessert strain.
Look elsewhere if your garden stays wet in autumn and you cannot move pots under cover, or if you want a heavy sedating strain for late nights. A Do-Si-Dos child such as Moonbow gives more body weight from the same Zkittlez side.
How Gruntz compares
Runtz is its closest relative, a little more balanced and fruit-punch than grape. Moonbow shares the Zkittlez parent but swaps Gelato 33 for Do-Si-Dos, making it heavier and frostier. Gelato 33 is the creamier parent with less candy. Among our indica feminized seeds, Gruntz is the grape candy option for small spaces, and it suits the short-season approach in our best outdoor seeds for Canada guide.
Frequently asked questions about Gruntz
Is Gruntz the same as Runtz?
No, Gruntz and Runtz are related but separate strains. Both come from Zkittlez and Gelato, but Gruntz uses Gelato 33 and was selected for a grapier flavour and slightly heavier body effect, while Runtz is more fruit-punch and balanced.
Is Gruntz indica or sativa?
Gruntz is an indica leaning hybrid, about 60% indica and 40% sativa. It starts with a tingly, focused lift and moves into a relaxed, euphoric body calm, and the plant grows short and bushy.
How strong is Gruntz?
Gruntz usually tests between 22% and 28% THC, with some lab results reported higher. The onset is gradual and friendly, so it feels more manageable than its numbers suggest, but beginners should still start small.
What does Gruntz taste like?
Gruntz tastes like grape candy and mixed berries with a sweet, creamy finish. A light earthy gas shows up when the buds are broken. The flavour fades if the buds are dried too warm, so a cool, slow dry is worth the patience.
