Where Red Velvet comes from

Red Velvet is a modern West Coast dessert cross. One parent is Lemon Cherry Gelato, the sweet, sour cherry Gelato descendant that became one of the most requested strains of the early 2020s. The other is Piña Acai, a fruit-forward hybrid with pineapple and dark berry notes. Their offspring was released around 2022 and spread through California menus before reaching seed form. It is named for the cake, and the name fits: cherry, cocoa-like sweetness and a creamy finish.

Two things are worth knowing if you search for it. First, the name has been used loosely, and some older dispensary cuts called Red Velvet were described with different parents, including a Wedding Cake cross; the Lemon Cherry Gelato x Piña Acai line is the one most widely grown today and the one we stock. Second, it is not the same as Red Velvet Runtz, a separate Runtz cross with a candier profile.

Red Velvet strain effects and experience

Red Velvet starts light and cheerful. The first half hour brings an easy mood lift, a bit of talkativeness and a warm tingle through the body, which makes it good company for dinner, a film or a slow evening with friends. As it settles, the body relaxation deepens without tipping into couch lock at a moderate dose. Higher doses lean heavier, as the Gelato side of the family tends to do.

With THC from the low to high twenties, it is strong but rounded rather than sharp. Most people find it best in the late afternoon and evening, and newer users should start with a single small serving.

Red Velvet flavour, aroma and appearance

The jar opens with sugary black cherry and sweet lemon, then a creamy vanilla frosting note and a tropical, slightly tart layer from the Piña Acai parent. Broken apart, it gets spicier and woodier. The smoke is smooth, with cherry and berry on the inhale and cream and light cocoa on the exhale. Caryophyllene and limonene lead the terpene profile, with linalool adding a soft floral note.

Buds are medium sized and dense, with stacked calyxes. Colours run from lime green to dark purple, often with rusty red and orange pistils that give the strain its look in a jar. A thick coat of trichomes turns the whole flower pale, and cool nights in the last three weeks deepen the purple.

Growing Red Velvet in Canada

Indoors

Red Velvet is a medium, bushy hybrid with a moderate stretch of around 1.5 times. A four week veg and a flip at 45 to 55 cm usually finishes between 80 and 130 cm. It likes a warm day, 23 to 26 degrees, and responds to a 6 to 8 degree drop at night in the final three weeks, which is the most reliable way to bring out the colour. Feed moderately; the Gelato side can burn at the tips when pushed. Faster plants finish around day 56 to 60, slower ones want 65 to 70, so read the trichomes rather than the calendar. From week five, hold humidity near 45% to protect the dense buds.

Outdoors, by region

Outdoors Red Velvet is best on the BC coast and in southern Ontario, where it finishes in early to mid October. On Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, a sheltered, south-facing spot with a rain cover for the last two weeks is the recipe; cool October nights there give excellent colour. Southern Ontario growers should space plants widely and watch for mould after wet spells. In Quebec, the Maritimes and on the Prairies, grow it in a greenhouse or indoors unless your plant shows an early finishing phenotype in a first season. Height and training

Top once at the fourth or fifth node and pull the branches out with low stress training to create a flat canopy of eight to ten tops. Red Velvet has fairly tight internodes, so a light clean-up under the canopy at the flip and again at day 21 improves airflow where the buds are thickest. It rarely needs staking indoors.

Flowering and harvest cues

Watch the colour and the calyx swell from week seven, then check trichomes. Cloudy with 5% to 15% amber gives the brightest, most social effect; more amber makes it heavier. Dry for 10 to 14 days at around 60% humidity and 18 degrees. The cherry and vanilla become much more obvious after two to three weeks of cure.

Red Velvet yield indoors and outdoors

A trained indoor canopy gives 400 to 500 g/m² of tight, colourful buds. Outdoors in coastal BC or southern Ontario, a full-season plant in a 50 to 70 litre container produces 400 to 550 g. This is a quality-over-quantity strain, but the dense flowers lose little weight in drying, and the colour and trichome coverage make the harvest look better than the scale suggests.

Who Red Velvet is for, and who should pick something else

Grow Red Velvet if you love dessert flavours, if you want a jar that turns heads, or if you already enjoy Lemon Cherry Gelato and want a fruitier, more relaxed relative. It suits growers who can manage temperature and humidity through a nine week finish.

Pick something else if you want maximum weight, if you garden outdoors on the Prairies, or if you want a fast, forgiving first grow. For that, Gelato Cake is a shorter, easier dessert plant.
