Where Gelonade comes from

Gelonade is a cross of Lemon Tree, a Lemon Skunk and Sour Diesel hybrid known for an almost pure lemon aroma, and Gelato #41, the creamy, dense Gelato phenotype. It came out of California in the late 2010s and gained a following among people who wanted a daytime strain that tasted as good as the dessert strains of the day.

The name is a blend of Gelato and lemonade, and the flavour matches: sweet lemon over a creamy, vanilla base. In the garden it grows with a sativa's upward stretch but produces denser, heavier buds than most sativa leaners, a gift from the Gelato side.

Gelonade strain effects and experience

Gelonade is a daytime strain. The onset is quick and uplifting, with a clear, focused head and a noticeable lift in mood and energy. Many people use it for creative work, a walk or chores, and it keeps you engaged rather than restless. The Gelato side keeps the edges soft, so there is a gentle calm in the body without heaviness.

At 18% to 26% THC, potency depends on the grow. Sensitive users should take it slowly, as bright sativa leaners can feel racy in a large dose. The high runs around two hours and fades cleanly, without the fog or heavy eyelids that follow a dessert indica, which is why it has a following among people who want to stay productive through an afternoon.

Gelonade flavour, aroma and appearance

The aroma is fresh lemon zest and sweet lemonade, with a creamy vanilla and sugar note underneath and a faint diesel edge from the Lemon Tree side. The smoke is smooth and tart on the inhale, sweet and creamy on the exhale, with a lemon aftertaste that lingers. Limonene leads the terpene profile, supported by caryophyllene and myrcene.

The buds are elongated, lime-green and very frosty, with bright orange pistils and occasional purple tints in a cool finish. The plant is tall with long branches and fewer leaves around the colas than the Gelato strains.

Growing Gelonade in Canada

Indoors

Gelonade stretches roughly 1.8 to 2 times after the flip, so veg for three weeks and flip at 40 to 50 cm, or plan for plants up to 160 cm. It likes a bright, warm room at 24 to 27 degrees and a moderate feed. Flowering runs 56 to 63 days, with some phenotypes wanting an extra few days. The buds are denser than a typical sativa, so keep humidity at 45% or lower from week six and keep air moving through the canopy.

Outdoors, by region

Its 8 to 9 week flower makes Gelonade workable in most of Canada, a rarity for a sativa leaner. In BC's Okanagan and Similkameen valleys, the Lower Mainland and southern Ontario, plant out in late May and harvest in the last week of September or the first days of October. In Quebec and the Maritimes, choose the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have and expect an early October harvest. Prairie growers should start indoors in early April under lights and plant out after the last frost; a late September harvest is typical, and staking helps the tall plant through prairie winds. Height and training

Gelonade needs height control. Top at the fourth node, then use low stress training to bend the main branches outward and keep the canopy flat. A screen at the flip is useful for spreading the stretch. Outdoors, stake or cage the plant by midsummer; the colas get heavy and the long branches can bend or snap in wind. Flowering and harvest cues

Harvest when most trichomes are cloudy with a few amber, usually day 56 to 63; cut early rather than late to keep the effect bright and the lemon at its peak. Dry slowly at 60% humidity and 18 degrees for 10 to 12 days, then cure for two weeks or more. The lemon aroma is volatile, so a cool, dark dry makes the biggest difference to the final flavour.

Gelonade yield indoors and outdoors

A trained indoor plant gives 400 to 550 g/m², and the best results come from a flat screen where every top gets equal light; untrained plants put most of their weight into one tall cola and leave the lower branches airy. Outdoors, a full-season plant in a 60 litre pot or in the ground produces 500 to 700 g dried, and Prairie plants started in April return 350 to 450 g. The buds are dense for a sativa leaner and easy to trim, since the leaves pull away from the colas cleanly. Resin production is high enough that the trim makes a bright, lemony dry sift.

Who Gelonade is for, and who should pick something else

Grow Gelonade if you want a bright, lemon-flavoured daytime strain that still finishes outdoors in Canada, if you like creative sessions, or if you have the headroom to manage the stretch. It rewards growers who are comfortable topping and bending branches, and it is a good second or third grow for anyone who has already run a compact indica and wants to try a plant with more vigour.

How Gelonade compares

Lemon Tree, its parent, is more purely lemon and more energetic, with less cream. Super Lemon Haze is taller and slower, a true sativa that needs a longer season.
