Where Gelonade comes from

Gelonade is a cross of Lemon Tree, a Lemon Skunk and Sour Diesel hybrid known for an almost pure lemon aroma, and Gelato #41, the creamy, dense Gelato phenotype. It came out of California in the late 2010s and gained a following among people who wanted a daytime strain that tasted as good as the dessert strains of the day.

The name is a blend of Gelato and lemonade, and the flavour matches: sweet lemon over a creamy, vanilla base. In the garden it grows with a sativa’s upward stretch but produces denser, heavier buds than most sativa leaners, a gift from the Gelato side.

Indoors

Gelonade stretches roughly 1.8 to 2 times after the flip, so veg for three weeks and flip at 40 to 50 cm, or plan for plants up to 160 cm. It likes a bright, warm room at 24 to 27 degrees and a moderate feed. Flowering runs 56 to 63 days, with some phenotypes wanting an extra few days. The buds are denser than a typical sativa, so keep humidity at 45% or lower from week six and keep air moving through the canopy.

Outdoors, by region

Its 8 to 9 week flower makes Gelonade workable in most of Canada, a rarity for a sativa leaner. In BC’s Okanagan and Similkameen valleys, the Lower Mainland and southern Ontario, plant out in late May and harvest in the last week of September or the first days of October. In Quebec and the Maritimes, choose the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have and expect an early October harvest. Height and training

Gelonade needs height control. Top at the fourth node, then use low stress training to bend the main branches outward and keep the canopy flat. A screen at the flip is useful for spreading the stretch. Outdoors, stake or cage the plant by midsummer; the colas get heavy and the long branches can bend or snap in wind. Flowering and harvest cues

Harvest when most trichomes are cloudy with a few amber, usually day 56 to 63; cut early rather than late to keep the effect bright and the lemon at its peak. Dry slowly at 60% humidity and 18 degrees for 10 to 12 days, then cure for two weeks or more. The lemon aroma is volatile, so a cool, dark dry makes the biggest difference to the final flavour.

A trained indoor plant gives 400 to 550 g/m², and the best results come from a flat screen where every top gets equal light; untrained plants put most of their weight into one tall cola and leave the lower branches airy. Outdoors, a full-season plant in a 60 litre pot or in the ground produces 500 to 700 g dried, and Prairie plants started in April return 350 to 450 g. The buds are dense for a sativa leaner and easy to trim, since the leaves pull away from the colas cleanly. Resin production is high enough that the trim makes a bright, lemony dry sift.
