Where Cookies and Cream comes from

Cookies and Cream is a cross between Starfighter and an undisclosed Girl Scout Cookies phenotype. Starfighter is a frost-heavy hybrid built from Tahoe Alien and Lemon Alien Dawg, so it carries OG Kush and Alien Dawg genetics into the mix. The Cookies side brings the sweet, doughy flavour and the dense, compact buds that made that family famous. The strain spread through the California scene in the mid 2010s and earned a name as one of the best tasting hybrids of the period.

Its bigger legacy is as a parent. Cookies and Cream sits behind Oreoz, Grease Monkey and several other modern dessert crosses, and growers who know those strains often come back to the original to see where the vanilla came from. The first effect is light and cheerful. Most people describe a smiling, slightly giggly lift that makes conversation easy and the evening feel slower. Buds are medium, dense and round, lime green to olive, with orange pistils and a heavy layer of trichomes from the Starfighter side. In cooler rooms some phenotypes show purple flecks on the sugar leaves late in flower. The plant grows as a compact, branching bush with medium-wide leaves.

Indoors

Cookies and Cream is one of the easier dessert hybrids to grow. A three to four week veg and a flip at about 45 cm finishes at 80 to 130 cm after a stretch of about 1.5 times, so it fits most home tents. It prefers a light to moderate feed; the Cookies side shows nutrient burn on the tips quickly, so start at two thirds of the label dose. Day temperatures of 22 to 26 degrees and humidity under 50% from week five keep the dense tops clean. Most plants finish in 56 to 63 days, and a few phenotypes want a week longer.

Outdoors, by region

An 8 to 9 week flower lets Cookies and Cream finish across most of southern Canada. In BC’s coastal and interior valleys, including the Okanagan and Kootenays, it is ready in late September. Southern Ontario and the Ottawa Valley usually harvest in the last week of September or the first days of October, and Quebec and Nova Scotia growers can match that with a sunny, sheltered bed and a late May planting. On the Prairies, give it a head start: germinate indoors in early to mid April, move it outside once the late May frost risk passes, and it will usually finish before the first hard freeze near the end of September. Because the plant stays fairly short, it is easy to cover or wheel into a garage on a cold night.

Height and training

Top once at the fourth node and tie the branches outward with low stress training for an even, flat canopy of 8 to 10 tops. The internodes are close, so thinning out small shoots in the middle of the plant at week three of flower improves airflow more than heavy defoliation. Flowering and harvest cues

Watch the calyxes swell and the trichomes turn from clear to cloudy from about day 52. Most plants are ready from day 56 to 63, when the heads are mostly cloudy with a few amber. Harvesting a little later, at 15% to 20% amber, gives a heavier and sleepier result. Dry for 10 to 12 days at around 60% humidity and cure for at least two weeks; the vanilla note is muted right after drying and becomes clearer with each week in the jar.

Cookies and Cream yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, a trained canopy under a good LED gives 400 to 500 g/m² of dense buds that trim quickly and hold their weight after drying. Outdoors, a plant in a 50 litre pot or in the ground returns 450 to 600 g in a full season in BC or southern Ontario, and Prairie plants with a shorter season usually produce 300 to 450 g. The trichome density also makes the trim worth saving for dry sift or edibles.
