Purple Haze strain crosses Purple Thai, a landrace-derived sativa that carries the anthocyanin genetics behind the colour, with Haze, the long-flowering sativa line that shaped most of the bright, cerebral strains that followed it. The pairing dates back decades, which is unusual for a strain still selling steadily.
The name is tangled up with the Jimi Hendrix song released in 1967, and the argument over which came first has never been settled. The association has kept the name alive for sixty years. It is sativa dominant at around 60/40, tall and open in structure, and far easier to grow than the pure haze lines it descends from.
The onset is quick and unmistakably sativa: a lifted, slightly dreamy head change within ten minutes, then an hour or more of energy, chattiness and the sort of loose creative focus that suits music, painting or a long walk. There is a mild psychedelic edge at a larger dose, which is where most of the strain’s reputation comes from, but it stays clear rather than confusing.
The finish is gentler than the opening. After the first hour it settles into a calm, comfortable state without the couch weight of an indica. At 17% to 22% THC it is moderate by current standards, and that suits the effect: the clarity is the point.
The nose is tart grape and sweet berry first, then an earthy, woody base with a peppery spice and a cool, faintly minty haze note at the back. On the smoke it is smooth and sweet on the inhale, with a spicy, herbal exhale and a clean finish that does not linger. Myrcene leads the terpene profile with caryophyllene and limonene behind it.
The buds are long and slightly airy in the way sativas usually are, and the colour is the reason people grow it. Cool nights in the final three weeks turn the calyxes and leaves violet, lavender and, in a genuinely cold finish, close to blue, with bright orange pistils running through them. The leaves are darker than most sativas even before the colour arrives.
Purple Haze is one of the more forgiving sativas. Veg three to four weeks and flip at 35 to 45 cm, because the stretch runs close to double and an over-vegged plant will crowd the light; even flipped small it finishes at 110 to 150 cm. It feeds lightly and is quick to show burn, so run nutrients at around 70% of a normal indica schedule. Room temperature of 22 to 27 degrees in the day, and a night drop to 15 or 16 degrees from week six is what triggers the purple. Flower runs 63 to 70 days, and the buds are open enough that humidity is much less of a worry than with dense modern hybrids.
A 9 to 10 week flower and an early to mid October harvest make this a coastal BC and southern Ontario plant outdoors. On Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and through the Niagara belt, plant out in late May and expect to cut in the first two weeks of October, with the September nights doing the colouring at no cost. Southern Quebec can manage it in a warm year in a sheltered spot. On the Prairies, in the Maritimes and anywhere with an early October frost, grow it in a greenhouse or a tent instead; the plant will take a cool night happily but not a hard freeze two weeks before it is ready. Top twice, early, and spread the plant flat. Left alone Purple Haze grows tall and open with long gaps between bud sites, which wastes both light and vertical space. A screen and a bit of low stress training close the gaps and turn the sativa structure into ten or twelve decent colas instead of one long spear.
The colour arrives before ripeness on this plant, so a cut based on how it looks will be early. Check trichomes from day 60: mostly cloudy with very little amber keeps the effect bright and energetic, which is what the strain is for, while waiting for 10% or more amber makes it noticeably duller and heavier. Dry cool and slow, 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity, because the berry and grape notes are among the first to disappear in a hot dry room.
Indoors, a trained canopy gives 350 to 450 g/m². The buds are lighter and less dense than a modern hybrid, so the dry weight is the honest number, but the flower trims quickly. Outdoors in a full coastal BC or southern Ontario season a plant returns 400 to 500 g dried, and the height means it needs real space rather than a balcony pot.
Grow Purple Haze if you want a daytime sativa that will not take all summer, if colour matters to you, or if you have grown indicas and want a first sativa that does not punish the attempt.

I want my plant to be beautiful. This is the one! Nicely flowered into purple color and the smell was OVERWHELMING. The high it gave was very cerebral, euphoric, slightly psychedelic, and gave a nice stoned feel afterward. A bit hard to grow for first-timers since this strain is very precise about the nutrients. Completely relax the mind and body so you can fully enjoy the high. Stimulates both male and female sexually ((makes sex last longer and more pleasurable)) Very little munchies. I just finished the Purple Haze. Excellent! Just like every strain I’ve grown with your seeds. The best decision I’ve made since I started growing was when I decided to start buying seeds from MJSC.ca. I’ve been growing for 2 years now. Its currently in week 8 of flower and she has shown resilience with a high humidity environment with a MarsHydro TSW2000 providing sunshine. Been flowering with 75-78*f, 60-66RH. Trichomes looking 50/50 clear-cloudy on week 8. Best grown under a trellis, I didn’t this run. The buds have fattened so much I’m having to use hangers to hold them up or pipe cleaners wired back to herself to hold them up. Hence the reason for the trellis. Vegged 6 weeks and when switched to flower she shot up and topped out at exactly 3”. Can’t wait to try her out! I’m so excited!

Such a beautiful-looking plant! I am at the beginning of the 7th week of flowering and the pistols are starting to change colors. It’s my first time growing. I had difficulty in my cloning attempts. I started two plants from seeds. I can’t wait to harvest. Three weeks left. It’s very exciting. The plant is feeling sticky and smells nice. I have had the other plant in a vegetative state since I started while the other is flowering and it grew much taller. I must say the Purple haze by MJSC.ca is fantastic.
