Where Animal Face comes from

Animal Face strain is a cross of Face Off OG, the famously heavy-handed OG Kush selection that built its reputation on raw knockdown potency, and Animal Mints, the minty, cookie-dough hybrid that brought trichome coverage and a sweeter finish to the Cookies family. The pairing appeared around 2019 and travelled fast on reputation alone, because it did something the OG lines rarely do: it kept the fuel and the punch but came out sativa leaning, roughly 70/30, with a head-first effect instead of a couch-first one.

The name comes from its parents rather than the plant, but it fits the smell. Animal Face reads as turpentine, sharp pine and diesel first, with the mint and cookie dough underneath rather than on top. It is one of the few modern strains that does not smell like dessert at all.

There is almost no delay. The first effect is a hard cerebral surge, bright and slightly electric, arriving within a minute or two and pulling focus with it. For the next hour it is a working strain: talkative, detail-oriented, good for a project or a long walk. Animal Face stretches hard after the flip, often two to two and a half times, so veg for no more than three weeks from seed in a standard 180 cm tent or you will be tying colas sideways in week four. Keep the room at 24 to 27 degrees with real air movement through the canopy, because those spear colas sit close together and stale air invites trouble. Outdoors, by region

A 9 to 10 week flower puts Animal Face in the coastal BC and southern Ontario category outdoors, and nowhere else in the country without cover. On the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, start in April, plant out at the end of May and expect to cut in the first half of October, with a tarp ready for the autumn rain. The Niagara region and the Lake Erie shoreline can finish it in a warm year. Quebec, the Maritimes and the Prairies should treat this as a greenhouse or indoor plant: the frost arrives before the trichomes are ready, and a plant this tall is hard to protect.

Height and training

Top early, at the third or fourth node, and commit to two layers of netting. Animal Face wants to be a single enormous spear and will put most of its energy into one cola if you let it, so spreading the branches with low stress training and holding them under a net is what turns one big top into a dozen good ones. Strip the bottom third at the flip; that growth will never catch light on a plant this tall.

Flowering and harvest cues

The pistils darken early and mean nothing here, so work from trichomes only. From day 60, check the calyxes rather than the sugar leaves; mostly cloudy with a scattering of amber, around day 65, is where the head rush is sharpest. Let it run to day 70 and the effect shifts toward the body. Dry at 17 to 18 degrees over 12 to 14 days so the fuel terpenes do not flash off.

Under a good LED with a properly filled net, Animal Face returns 450 to 550 g/m², and the buds trim quickly because the spears carry little leaf between them. Outdoors in a coastal BC season, a plant in a 60 to 80 litre pot gives 500 to 700 g dried.
