Where Black Maple comes from

The Black Maple strain is a cross of Dulce de Uva and Sherbanger, two dessert-and-gas hybrids with deep roots. Dulce de Uva combines Ice Cream Cake with a Grape Pie and Wedding Crasher cross, which brings the grape, the vanilla cream and much of the colour. Sherbanger is Sunset Sherbet crossed with Headbanger, a Diesel descendant, and adds the sour, gassy edge and a boost in resin. The best-known selection, Black Maple #22, was entered in a 2023 cannabis competition and helped put the name on growers’ radar.

The name is descriptive: black for the almost inky bracts that finish under cool night temperatures, maple for the syrupy, pancake-batter sweetness of the cured flower. It has no genetic link to Maple Leaf Indica, an old Afghani-type plant that often shows up in the same searches.

Black Maple starts behind the eyes with a warm, euphoric pressure and a pleasant drift in thought. It is a pleasant first half hour for music, a film or a slow meal. Then the body effect takes over, heavy and calm through the chest and limbs, and most people find themselves settled in one place for the rest of the evening.

This is a night-time strain for nearly everyone. At 20% to 30% THC it is strong, and the heavier phenotypes can be deeply sedating at larger doses. Keep sessions small until you know how your plants turned out.

Black Maple flavour, aroma and appearance

Grind a bud and the first wave is dark grape and berry, followed quickly by maple syrup, vanilla cream and a doughy, pancake-batter sweetness. Behind that sits toasted oak, molasses and a peppery spice, and the exhale carries a sour citrus and gas finish from the Headbanger side. Caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene lead the terpene profile, with humulene and linalool adding wood and floral notes.

Grown warm, Black Maple finishes green with orange pistils. Grown with nights around 15 degrees or lower in the last two to three weeks, the calyxes go deep purple and then close to black, set off by bright white trichomes and rust-orange hairs. The buds are dense and spade-shaped, and the resin is greasy, which is why growers who wash hash rate it so highly. Seed-grown plants vary: not every one turns black, and some lean more toward maple and caramel while others show more grape skin or fuel.

Growing Black Maple in Canada

Indoors

Expect a stretch of 1.5 to 2 times after the flip. A four week veg and a flip at 40 to 50 cm usually lands the finished plant at 90 to 140 cm. The bushy interior is the main challenge, so defoliate at the flip and again around day 21, and keep a fan moving air through the middle of the plant. Keep humidity near 50% early in flower, around 40% to 45% from week six, and lower lights-off temperatures in the final two weeks to 14 to 16 degrees if you want the black colour.

Outdoors, by region

Black Maple flowers for 8 to 10 weeks and finishes outdoors in early to mid October, which makes it a coastal BC and southern Ontario strain in the open. On Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and in the Fraser Valley, the cool September nights bring out the colour beautifully, but the same damp weather invites bud rot, so a rain cover and wide spacing are essential. In southern Ontario, from Windsor to Prince Edward County, it usually finishes in the first half of October. The Prairies, northern Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces are better served by a greenhouse or an indoor grow. Height and training

Top once or twice and spread the branches under a trellis net. A screen of green raises the yield considerably with this strain and opens the bush so air can pass through it. Remove the lowest shoots and any interior growth that will never see direct light.

Flowering and harvest cues

The colour change and final trichome swell both arrive late, so do not rush. Start checking at day 58. Mostly cloudy heads with 10% to 15% amber gives the balance most growers want; wait longer for a heavier effect. Dry slowly for 12 to 14 days at around 60% humidity; the maple note comes through clearly after three weeks of curing.

Black Maple yield indoors and outdoors

With a screen and a strong light, Black Maple returns 450 to 600 g/m² indoors, and some well tuned rooms report more. Outdoors on the coast or in southern Ontario, a large plant in the ground or a 100 litre container produces 600 to 900 g in a good year. The resin load is high enough that the trim alone is worth washing or pressing.

Who Black Maple is for, and who should pick something else

Grow Black Maple feminized seeds if you want a showpiece: dark, frosty buds with a dessert flavour and a heavy evening effect. It rewards growers who can drop night temperatures in late flower and who take humidity seriously, and it suits hash makers who want a high return per plant.
