Hella Jelly Feminized at a glance: Hella Jelly is a roughly 70/30 sativa dominant cross of Very Cherry and Notorious THC that flowers in only 6 to 7 weeks, tests 22% to 30% THC, stays compact at 60 to 110 cm indoors and produces small, dense, lime green buds that smell of mango, cherry and candy.
A six week sativa for the shortest Canadian summers, delivered within the week
Hella Jelly was bred for places where autumn comes early, which describes most of Canada. A strain that finishes in six or seven weeks of bloom can be grown outdoors in Edmonton, Saskatoon or Thunder Bay, and the seeds do not have to cross a border to reach you. We ship them from our Vancouver, BC seed bank in plain packaging, and they arrive anywhere in the country in 3 to 7 business days. Every batch is tested for viability before sale and covered by our 80% germination guarantee, and 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free.
Where Hella Jelly comes from
Hella Jelly crosses Very Cherry, a sweet, fast finishing cherry selection, with Notorious THC, a high-potency line known for heavy trichome production. It first appeared as regular seed under the name Jelly Rancher, then won its breeder’s large phenotype hunt in 2019 and was released in feminized form under its current name. “Hella” is Northern California slang for “very”, and “Jelly” refers to the jam and candy flavour, so the name is essentially “very jelly”.
The strain’s appeal comes from an unusual combination. It produces a sativa-style effect and a fruit-candy aroma, yet the plant stays short, sturdy and quick, which is much more typical of an indica. That makes it practical in small tents and in short northern seasons. Its genetics have also been used as a parent, most notably in Hella Jealousy, a Jealousy cross sold as flower in Canadian legal stores.
Hella Jelly strain effects and experience
The onset is quick and upbeat. A bright, euphoric head rush arrives within minutes, often with a burst of chatter, laughter and ideas. Many people find it a good fit for creative tasks, music or time outdoors. A light, comfortable body ease runs underneath, but it rarely becomes heavy unless the session is large.
With 22% to 30% THC, Hella Jelly is far stronger than its playful name suggests. Racy energy is possible with a big dose, so start small, especially if you are not used to sativa-leaning strains.
Hella Jelly flavour, aroma and appearance
The jar smells like a bag of mixed fruit candy: mango and strawberry first, then cherry, grape and cotton candy, finished with a sour citrus tang and a light caramel sweetness. Grinding it releases some spicy, kushy notes. The smoke is sweet and fruity on the inhale with a peppery finish. Lab results usually show caryophyllene on top, followed by myrcene and limonene, with smaller amounts of linalool, pinene and ocimene.
Buds are small, round and dense, bright lime green with golden tones, red-orange pistils and a glistening layer of trichomes. In cool finishes some plants show pink or purple on the sugar leaves.
Growing Hella Jelly in Canada
Indoors
Hella Jelly is one of the easiest high-THC plants to fit into a tent. It branches readily, stretches only moderately, and finishes at 60 to 110 cm with a three to four week veg. Days at 22 to 26 degrees, a light to moderate feed and humidity of about 45% to 50% in late bloom keep it happy. The flowering period is short, around 45 to 50 days, so it is possible to run more harvests a year than with most photoperiod strains. It also tolerates the odd mistake with watering or feeding, which suits newer growers.
Outdoors, by region
This is where Hella Jelly stands out. In the Prairies, northern Ontario, central Quebec and northern BC, where most photoperiod strains fail to finish, it can complete outdoors: start indoors in late April or early May, plant out once frost has passed in early June, and harvest in mid to late September. On the BC coast, in southern Ontario and in the Maritimes it finishes in the first half of September, well before the autumn rains and the mould that comes with them. A south facing, sheltered spot and a raised bed for warmer soil help in the coolest zones. For more short season options, see our fastest flowering seeds for Canada.
Height and training
Because the plant is naturally bushy, a single topping and some low stress training are usually enough to give an even canopy with six to ten main tops. Avoid heavy defoliation; with such a short bloom the plant has little time to recover. Outdoors, a tomato cage or a couple of stakes keeps the branches upright in wind.
Flowering and harvest cues
Trichomes turn cloudy fast in this strain, often by day 42 to 45. For the brightest, most energetic effect, harvest when most trichomes are cloudy and very few are amber. Dry the branches for 10 to 12 days in a cool, dark room at around 60% humidity, then cure in jars for two weeks or more; the fruit notes deepen noticeably with time.
Hella Jelly yield indoors and outdoors
Hella Jelly gives medium yields indoors, typically 350 to 450 g/m² from a trained canopy. Outdoors, a plant in a 40 to 60 litre container or good garden soil produces roughly 300 to 500 g of dried flower, depending on how early it goes outside and how much sun it gets. The yield per week of bloom is very good, and the quick finish means a dependable harvest even in places where slower strains never ripen.
Who Hella Jelly is for, and who should pick something else
Choose Hella Jelly if you want a daytime, fruit-flavoured strain, if you are short on height or time, or if you garden outdoors in a region with a short season. It is also a good choice for first-time growers who want strong results without a long, demanding bloom.
If you want a heavy evening indica or a very large outdoor plant, pick something else. Growers who want the cherry flavour with a sweeter, creamier and more relaxing effect may prefer Lemon Cherry Gelato.
How Hella Jelly compares
Jealousy is the other parent of Hella Jealousy, so it is a useful contrast: gassier, more balanced and two to three weeks slower. Tropicana Cherry shares the bright cherry and citrus profile on a slightly larger plant. If you want speed but prefer an autoflower, browse our autoflowering seeds. More daytime picks are in our sativa feminized seeds.
Frequently asked questions about Hella Jelly
Is Hella Jelly sativa or indica?
Hella Jelly is a sativa dominant hybrid, about 70% sativa and 30% indica. The effect is bright, euphoric and social, while the plant grows short and bushy like an indica and finishes very quickly.
What is Hella Jelly a cross of?
Hella Jelly is Very Cherry crossed with Notorious THC. It was first released as Jelly Rancher and renamed Hella Jelly after it won its breeder’s phenotype hunt in 2019 and became available as feminized seed.
How long does Hella Jelly take to flower?
Hella Jelly flowers in 6 to 7 weeks, about 45 to 50 days after the switch to 12/12. Outdoors in Canada it finishes in September, which makes it one of the few high-THC photoperiod strains that can ripen on the Prairies and in other short season regions.
How strong is Hella Jelly?
Hella Jelly usually tests between 22% and 30% THC with very little CBD. That is a strong strain, and its sativa side can feel racy at high doses, so a small first session is wise.
