Where Melonade comes from
Melonade strain is a West Coast cross of Watermelon Zkittlez, a candy-sweet descendant of Zkittlez known for a juicy melon nose, and Lemon Tree, the Lemon Skunk and Sour Diesel hybrid that tastes like fresh-cut lemons with a little fuel. It appeared in the late 2010s, won fans quickly for a flavour that sounds like a summer drink, and went on to become a parent itself: Devil Driver is Melonade crossed with Sundae Driver.
The name is a simple blend of watermelon and lemonade. Several spin-offs share part of the name, including autoflower lines and three-way crosses with extra parents, so it helps to check the lineage. Our seeds are the original two-way Watermelon Zkittlez x Lemon Tree line, a sativa leaning hybrid around 60/40 that grows tall, branches freely and finishes in about two months.
Melonade strain effects and experience
Melonade starts in the head. A clean, buzzy lift arrives in minutes, along with a talkative, optimistic mood and a noticeable boost in focus on whatever is in front of you. It is a common pick for chores, creative work, hiking and long afternoons outdoors. The body side stays light for the first couple of hours and only gets heavier as the effect fades, so it rarely leaves people stuck on the sofa.
THC from 22% to 27% means it still deserves respect. Sativa leaning strains at this level can feel racy if you overdo them, so keep sessions small on an empty stomach.
Melonade flavour, aroma and appearance
The aroma is pure summer: sliced watermelon and melon candy first, followed by a sharp lemon zest that makes the mouth water. A faint fuel note from the Lemon Tree side sits at the back, along with a little spice when the bud is broken. The smoke is light and sweet, citrus on the inhale and candied melon on the exhale. Limonene usually leads the terpene profile, supported by myrcene, ocimene and caryophyllene, which explains the bright, fruity and slightly herbal character.
Buds are medium sized and conical, bright lime green with long tangerine pistils and a generous trichome coat. They are a little looser than a dessert indica, which helps them shrug off damp weather.
Growing Melonade in Canada
Indoors
Melonade stretches about 1.8 to 2 times after the flip, so three to four weeks of veg is plenty in most tents; it finishes between 100 and 150 cm. It likes a bright room, 24 to 28 degrees by day, and plenty of light intensity in bloom. Feed is light to medium; the Zkittlez side can burn its tips if pushed, so increase strength gradually. Keep humidity around 50% in mid flower and 45% at the end. Its looser buds make it one of the more mould tolerant fruit strains, but good air movement still pays. Most phenotypes are done between day 56 and day 63, with an occasional plant asking for a week more.
Outdoors, by region
An 8 to 9 week bloom is short enough for gardens across most of Canada. On the BC coast and in the Okanagan, plant out in late May and harvest in the last week of September. In southern Ontario, the Ottawa Valley and the Eastern Townships, a sunny spot and a late May transplant usually bring the crop in by early October. On the Prairies, start Melonade indoors in early April so it goes out at a good size, then harvest in late September, a few days ahead of the first hard frost in most years. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick gardens do well with a south-facing wall for extra heat. For more strains that ripen before the Canadian frost, see our best outdoor seeds for Canada roundup.
Height and training
Because of its stretch, Melonade does best with early training. Top at the fourth node, then use low stress training to bend the main stems outward so the canopy stays wide and flat. A screen of green works well indoors: fill the net during veg, flip when it is about 70% full, and tuck the tops under the net for the first two weeks of flower. Outdoors, a tomato cage or a couple of stakes is enough support.
Flowering and harvest cues
Pistils turn orange around day 50, and the buds swell noticeably in the final ten days. For the brightest, most energetic effect, harvest when the trichomes are mostly cloudy with only a few amber heads, typically around day 58 to 62. Waiting for 15% amber gives a slightly calmer finish. Melonade’s fruit terpenes are fragile, so dry at 16 to 18 degrees and about 60% humidity for 10 to 12 days, then cure for two to three weeks.
Melonade yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, a trained canopy produces 400 to 550 g/m², and the buds trim easily because the sugar leaves are short. Outdoors, a plant with a full summer in the ground or a 50 to 80 litre fabric pot typically gives 500 to 700 g dried, a little less on the Prairies where the season is shorter. It is a dependable producer rather than a heavyweight, and the flavour is the reason to grow it.
Who Melonade is for, and who should pick something else
Grow Melonade if you want a fruity, daytime strain, if you garden outdoors almost anywhere in southern Canada, or if you are on your first or second grow and want something forgiving. It is also a smart pick if you already love Lemon Tree or Zkittlez and want both in one plant.
Choose something else if you need a sleepy evening strain, if your grow space is under 120 cm tall, or if you want the strongest possible potency, because Melonade trades a few points of THC for flavour and clarity.
How Melonade compares
Against Lemon Tree, Melonade is sweeter and fruitier, with less fuel and a slightly softer head high. Against Zkittlez, it is more energetic and more citrus. Devil Driver, its child, adds Sundae Driver’s grape and cream for a heavier finish. Pink Lemonade is the closest flavour cousin on our shelf if you want berry and lemon in place of melon. Frequently asked questions about Melonade
What strain is Melonade?
Melonade is a sativa leaning hybrid bred from Watermelon Zkittlez and Lemon Tree. It is known for a watermelon and lemonade flavour, THC of 22% to 27% and an uplifting, focused high. Several spin-offs share the name, so check for that two-way lineage.
Is Melonade a sativa or indica?
Melonade is a sativa leaning hybrid, about 60% sativa and 40% indica. Its effect is bright, social and clear-headed for the first couple of hours, with only a mild body relaxation as it fades, so most people use it during the day.
What does Melonade taste like?
Melonade tastes like watermelon candy and fresh lemonade, with a faint fuel and spice note on the finish. Limonene drives the citrus, while the Watermelon Zkittlez parent provides the melon sweetness. A cool, slow dry keeps those fruit terpenes intact.
How long does Melonade take to flower?
Melonade flowers in 8 to 9 weeks, about 56 to 63 days after the switch to 12 hours of light. Outdoors in Canada it is usually ready from the last week of September to early October, which makes it suitable for most regions.
