Strawberry Shortcake Feminized at a glance: Strawberry Shortcake is a sativa leaning hybrid from Juliet and Strawberry Diesel that flowers in 9 to 10 weeks, tests 18% to 24% THC and yields 400 to 550 g/m² of frosty, lime green buds that smell of strawberry, cream and diesel.
Strawberry season here is June, so the seeds for a long sativa should land in early spring
Canadian strawberries ripen around the summer solstice. A 9 to 10 week sativa like Strawberry Shortcake needs to be in the ground by then, which means sprouting in April and ordering in March. Our seeds ship from Vancouver, BC in plain packaging and reach every province in 3 to 7 business days, with no customs and no waiting on an overseas order. Each lot is germination tested before it is packed and is covered by our 80% germination guarantee, and 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free, so planning a spring garden from one order is simple.
Where Strawberry Shortcake comes from
Strawberry Shortcake strain appeared around 2009 on the American West Coast, during the first wave of dessert-named hybrids. Its best-documented pedigree crosses Juliet, a Cinderella 99 and NYC Diesel hybrid, with Strawberry Diesel, itself a child of Strawberry Cough and Sour Diesel. Each line pushes in the same direction: fruit, citrus and lively sativa energy, with a diesel spine.
Because the name has never been protected, a few seed and clone lines sold as Strawberry Shortcake use creamier, indica leaning White or Wookie genetics instead. Those plants tend to be shorter and sleepier, with a vanilla cake note in place of the diesel. The Juliet and Strawberry Diesel version is the original and the one this page describes. It is also a separate strain from Strawberry Cheesecake, which has its own genetics.
Strawberry Shortcake strain effects and experience
Strawberry Shortcake wakes you up in a friendly way. The first half hour brings a clear, bright mood, a sociable streak and an easy flow of ideas, without the jittery edge of some fuel sativas. A light, pleasant body ease joins in after that, softening the shoulders while the head stays clear. Most people place it in the late morning or afternoon, for a walk, a project or a slow afternoon with friends.
At 18% to 24% THC it is moderate by modern standards, which is part of its appeal for daytime use. High doses can feel heavier and tingly in the body, and dry mouth and eyes are common. As with any sativa leaning strain, people prone to anxiety should start with a very small amount.
Strawberry Shortcake flavour, aroma and appearance
The jar smells like a farm stand in June: fresh, ripe strawberries with a soft, creamy sweetness, a hint of sugar cookie, and underneath it a clean diesel and lemon peel note from the Juliet side. The smoke is smooth and fruity on the inhale and gently peppery on the exhale. Limonene, caryophyllene and myrcene are the dominant terpenes, with pinene and terpinolene adding the bright, almost floral edge typical of Cinderella 99 descendants.
The buds are medium sized, spear shaped and lime to forest green, with long orange pistils and a sparkling resin coat. When nights drop in late bloom, some plants show pink to burgundy tints on the sugar leaves, a nice match for the name.
Growing Strawberry Shortcake in Canada
Indoors
Strawberry Shortcake grows like a sativa: tall, fast and branchy, with a stretch of up to twice its height after the flip. Keep veg short, three to four weeks, and switch to 12/12 at around 40 cm to finish between 90 and 150 cm. It prefers a light to medium feed; the Cinderella 99 side shows nutrient burn on the leaf tips if pushed too hard. Days at 23 to 28 degrees suit it, and humidity at 45% to 50% is fine through mid flower before dropping to 40% to 45% in the final three weeks. A carbon filter is needed from week four; the diesel side makes itself known.
Outdoors, by region
With 9 to 10 weeks of bloom, Strawberry Shortcake finishes outdoors in early to mid October, so it is a plant for Canada’s longest growing seasons. On the BC coast, from the Saanich Peninsula to the Fraser Valley, sprout in April, plant out in late May, and give it a covered spot or a hoop house for the last fortnight of autumn rain. Southern Ontario growers along Lake Erie and in Niagara can grow it in the open in a warm year. In the Prairies, the Interior and Atlantic Canada, frost often comes before the buds finish, so a greenhouse or indoor tent is the safer choice. Our outdoor cultivation guide covers timing and site selection.
Height and training
Height is the main job with Shortcake. Top early, at the third or fourth node, and use low stress training to bend the main stems outward so the canopy fills the tent rather than climbing. A screen of green is very effective with this strain: weave the stretching tips through the net during the first three weeks of flower and you will finish with a flat field of evenly sized colas.
Flowering and harvest cues
Expect 63 to 72 days. The spear-shaped colas keep producing new calyxes late, so give it the full time. For the clearest, most uplifting effect, harvest when trichomes are mostly cloudy with very little amber. Dry for 10 to 12 days at about 60% humidity and cure for at least two weeks; the strawberry and cream note sharpens markedly by week three.
Strawberry Shortcake yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, a well trained Strawberry Shortcake canopy yields 400 to 550 g/m². Outdoors in a long coastal BC or southern Ontario season, a full-sized plant in the ground can produce 450 to 700 g dried. The buds are less dense than an indica’s, so they dry quickly and trim easily.
Who Strawberry Shortcake is for, and who should pick something else
Strawberry Shortcake seeds suit growers who love fruit flavours, people who want a clear, sociable daytime strain, and indoor growers with enough headroom or the patience to train a tall plant. Outdoor growers on the BC coast or in southern Ontario can grow it outside.
Choose something else if your tent is short, if you garden on the Prairies without a greenhouse, or if you want a heavy evening strain. A compact indica or a faster finishing hybrid would suit those situations better.
How Strawberry Shortcake compares
Strawberry Cough, the grandparent, is lighter and even more cerebral, with a sharper berry note and less cream. Strawberry Diesel brings more fuel and sourness with a similar uplifting effect. NY Diesel, from the Juliet side, is pure grapefruit and fuel with no dessert at all. Among our sativa feminized seeds, Strawberry Shortcake is the choice when you want fruit and cream with a clear, sociable head.
Frequently asked questions about Strawberry Shortcake
Is Strawberry Shortcake a sativa or indica?
Strawberry Shortcake is a sativa leaning hybrid, about 65% sativa and 35% indica. It gives an uplifting, sociable effect with mild body relaxation. Some creamier, indica leaning lines are sold under the same name, but the original Juliet x Strawberry Diesel version leans sativa.
What is Strawberry Shortcake strain a cross of?
Strawberry Shortcake is a cross of Juliet and Strawberry Diesel. Juliet is Cinderella 99 x NYC Diesel, and Strawberry Diesel is Strawberry Cough x Sour Diesel. That gives the strain its strawberry, cream and diesel flavour and its energetic effect.
What does Strawberry Shortcake strain taste like?
Strawberry Shortcake tastes of ripe strawberries and light cream, with a faint sugar cookie sweetness and a clean diesel and lemon finish. The fruit is strongest after a slow dry and two to three weeks of curing.
How long does Strawberry Shortcake take to flower?
Strawberry Shortcake flowers in 9 to 10 weeks, roughly 63 to 72 days after the switch to 12/12. Outdoors in Canada it finishes in early to mid October, so it suits coastal BC and southern Ontario, while growers elsewhere do better with a greenhouse or indoor tent.
