Moonbow Feminized at a glance: Moonbow is a 70/30 indica dominant cross of Zkittlez and Do-Si-Dos that flowers in 9 to 10 weeks, tests 22% to 28% THC and yields 400 to 500 g/m² of compact, frost-heavy buds tasting of berry candy, grape and pine.
Seeds that keep until spring: storing a Moonbow pack for an April start
Plenty of Canadian growers order in autumn or winter and plant in spring, and Moonbow seeds store well if you treat them right: keep the sealed pack in a cool, dark, dry place such as the back of a fridge in an airtight container, and let it reach room temperature before opening so no condensation forms. Ours start fresh because they are already here. They ship from our Vancouver, BC seed bank in plain packaging, reach every province in 3 to 7 business days with no customs stop, and each lot is germination tested before packing and backed by our 80% germination guarantee. Ten and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free.
Where Moonbow comes from
Moonbow strain is a cross of Zkittlez, the multi-award-winning fruit candy indica from Northern California, and Do-Si-Dos, the Girl Scout Cookies descendant famous for its frost and its heavy, calming effect. The pairing appeared in the late 2010s, and its best known selections are numbered cuts that circulated among Oregon and California growers before seeds became widely available.
The name is a play on the rainbow candy of its Zkittlez parent. A moonbow is a rainbow lit by moonlight, pale and silvery, which is a fair description of a Moonbow bud: rainbow fruit flavour under a white blanket of trichomes. It is sometimes confused with strains of similar names, but the Zkittlez and Do-Si-Dos pedigree is consistent across reliable sources.
Moonbow strain effects and experience
Moonbow starts gently. The first fifteen minutes bring a mild, smiling lift and a little extra focus, the Zkittlez side at work. Then Do-Si-Dos takes over with a slow, spreading body calm that loosens the shoulders without pinning you to the chair. Most people describe it as content and quiet, good for a film, a long dinner or music, and it only becomes sleepy late in the session or at larger doses.
The 22% to 28% THC range means it is not a light strain, but its onset is smooth and predictable. That makes it a reasonable choice for someone stepping up from milder flower who wants something relaxing without a racy start.
Moonbow flavour, aroma and appearance
The nose opens with mixed berry candy and grape, the unmistakable Zkittlez signature, then a floral, slightly lavender note and a cooling pine and earth from Do-Si-Dos. Grind it and a soft gas edge appears. On the palate it is sweet and smooth, berry and grape on the inhale, a minty, piney exhale. Caryophyllene, limonene and linalool typically lead the terpene mix, which fits the sweet-floral-spicy balance.
Buds are small to medium, round and very dense, sage green with lavender and deep purple tints in a cool finish. The trichome coverage is the standout: dried flowers can look almost white from a metre away, with thin orange pistils tucked in close.
Growing Moonbow in Canada
Indoors
Moonbow is compact and bushy, closer to its Zkittlez parent in shape. A four to five week veg and a flip at 40 to 50 cm produce a finished plant of 80 to 130 cm after a modest stretch of about 1.5 times. It is a light to medium feeder, and the Do-Si-Dos side is prone to nutrient burn if pushed, so begin at two thirds of the label rate and raise it only if lower leaves pale. Keep days at 22 to 26 degrees. In weeks seven to ten, a five to eight degree night drop deepens the purple, and humidity at 40% to 45% protects the tight buds.
Outdoors, by region
With a 9 to 10 week bloom, Moonbow outdoors belongs on the BC coast and in the warmest pockets of southern Ontario. In the Fraser Valley, the Gulf Islands and the Comox Valley, a late May transplant will finish in early to mid October; the compact plant is easy to cover with a small hoop of greenhouse plastic when the autumn rain sets in. Around Lake Erie and in the Niagara region, pick the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have and expect an early October harvest in a normal year. Everywhere else, Moonbow is best as a tent or greenhouse plant, where its small size is an advantage.
Height and training
Top once at the fourth node and use soft ties to pull the branches outward; the dense node spacing creates a lot of bud sites close together, and opening them up improves airflow more than it raises yield. A screen is optional. Strip the smallest lower shoots at the start of flower so the plant puts its energy into the top colas.
Flowering and harvest cues
Moonbow looks ready early because the pistils go orange around week seven. Wait for the trichomes: from day 60, look for milky heads with a little amber, typically between day 63 and 68. Dry slowly at 60% humidity for about two weeks. The candy and grape notes are delicate and fade in a warm, fast dry, so keep the drying room at 16 to 19 degrees.
Moonbow yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, a trained canopy gives 400 to 500 g/m², which is moderate, but the buds are dense and lose little on the scale after drying. Outdoors on the coast, a plant in a 40 to 60 litre pot returns 450 to 650 g dried. Moonbow is a quality strain rather than a bulk one, and its resin makes it worth keeping trim for hash. If you are deciding how many plants to run, our guide to how many seeds to buy walks through the numbers.
Who Moonbow is for, and who should pick something else
Choose Moonbow feminized seeds if you want candy flavour with real frost, if your space is small, or if you prefer a relaxing evening strain that leaves you clear enough to enjoy the evening. It also makes a fine second grow for anyone who has already handled Zkittlez or Do-Si-Dos.
Pick something else if you want a big outdoor plant in a short northern season, or if you are after maximum weight per square metre. For a daytime candy strain, a Runtz type with more sativa in the mix will suit you better.
How Moonbow compares
Do-Si-Dos is heavier and earthier, with more weight and less candy. Zkittlez is the sweeter, lighter parent and finishes a little faster. Gruntz shares the Zkittlez side but swaps Do-Si-Dos for Gelato 33, giving a grapier, more balanced result. Rainbow Belts is another fruit candy hybrid with a sour edge. Among our indica feminized seeds, Moonbow is the one we point to when flavour and frost matter more than size, and our indoor growing guide for Canada covers the tent setup it does best in.
Frequently asked questions about Moonbow
What strain is Moonbow?
Moonbow is an indica dominant hybrid bred from Zkittlez and Do-Si-Dos. Zkittlez gives it the fruit candy flavour, and Do-Si-Dos adds dense structure, heavy frost and a calming effect. Its name refers to a rainbow seen by moonlight, a nod to the rainbow candy parent.
Is Moonbow indica or sativa?
Moonbow is indica dominant, roughly 70% indica and 30% sativa. The effect starts with a mild, happy lift and moves into a relaxed body calm, and the plant itself grows short and bushy like most indica leaning hybrids.
How strong is Moonbow?
Moonbow usually tests between 22% and 28% THC with very little CBD. It is a strong strain with a smooth, gradual onset, so most people find it easier to manage than its THC number suggests.
What does Moonbow taste like?
Moonbow tastes like berry and grape candy with a floral, slightly lavender middle and a cool pine and mint exhale. A soft gas note appears when the buds are ground. A slow, cool dry keeps the candy flavour from fading.
