Girl Scout Cookies was bred in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 2000s by crossing an OG Kush cut with F1 Durb, a Durban Poison hybrid. OG Kush brought the fuel, earth and body weight; Durban Poison brought an energetic, clear head and a sweet, slightly anise note. The name came from its sugary nose, and within a few years the shortened form, GSC, was on menus across North America.

Its bigger legacy is as a parent. Much of the dessert cannabis of the last fifteen years, from Gelato and Sunset Sherbet to Biscotti and Wedding Cake, carries GSC genetics. When people describe a strain as having a Cookies nose, this is the reference point.

The first half hour is where the Durban side shows. Mood lifts quickly, time slows down, and ideas and jokes come easily. Then the OG Kush half takes over with a warm, spreading calm that settles into the shoulders and legs, leaving you content and unhurried. Most people find it best in the evening, and a generous amount can end in a long nap and a raid on the snack cupboard.

THC usually tests between 19% and 25%, with some well grown phenotypes going higher. That puts it firmly in the strong category for anyone who consumes only now and then.

A jar of GSC smells of sweet cookie dough and brown sugar first, with damp earth, a cool hint of mint and a peppery spice underneath. Keep daytime temperatures between 22 and 26 degrees and humidity at 40% to 50% in flower, and let the night fall six to eight degrees in the last two weeks if you want the purple. It is sensitive to overfeeding, so start at half the bottle strength and raise it slowly; burnt tips on the sugar leaves are your cue to back off. Outdoors, by region

With a finish between late September and mid October, GSC suits the milder, drier parts of the country. The Okanagan and Similkameen valleys are the easiest places to grow it outdoors, with hot summers and dry autumns that help the dense buds ripen cleanly. On the BC south coast and in southern Ontario, from the Niagara Peninsula to Windsor, plant out in late May and use a rain cover in the last three weeks. Faster phenotypes can finish in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley in a warm year. On the Prairies and in northern regions, a greenhouse or an indoor run is the safer choice, since the later phenotypes can still be flowering when the frost arrives.

Height and training

GSC grows a bushy, slightly uneven plant with many small branches. Top once or twice and spread the branches with low stress training to bring the lower sites up to the light; the method is explained in our guide to low stress training. Clear out the small, shaded growth under the canopy at the start of flower so the plant puts its energy into the tops.

Flowering and harvest cues

The purple usually appears from week six and has nothing to do with ripeness. Check trichomes with a loupe and harvest when most are cloudy with 10% to 20% amber, often between day 60 and 70. Dry slowly for 10 to 14 days at around 60% humidity, then cure for three to four weeks; the sweet dough note gets stronger the longer it cures.

GSC is a quality strain rather than a heavy producer. Trained indoor plants give 350 to 500 g/m². Outdoors in a warm BC interior or southern Ontario summer, expect 400 to 600 g per plant from a large container or garden bed. The dense, resinous buds keep their weight well through the dry, and the trim is sticky enough to be worth saving.
