Order before the holiday mail rush, flip the tent in December, harvest Blue Gelato in February
Late autumn is when most Canadian growers move indoors, and a 9 to 10 week strain started now is ready to harvest in the dark weeks of late winter. The catch is Canada Post in December, when parcel volumes jump and delivery slows. Our seeds are already in Canada, stocked in Vancouver, BC, and leave in plain packaging the day payment clears, so an order placed in November usually arrives in 3 to 7 business days, well ahead of the rush. Every batch is viability tested, covered by our 80% germination guarantee, and every 10 and 25 seed pack is buy one get one free.
Where Blue Gelato comes from
Blue Gelato strain combines one of the oldest dessert genetics in cannabis with one of the newest. On one side is Blueberry, the 1970s and 80s indica famous for its unmistakable berry jam smell. On the other are the two parents of Gelato itself, Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies and Sunset Sherbet. The result is essentially Blueberry folded into the Gelato recipe, and it was released as Blue Gelato 41 before the shorter name took over.
Blue Gelato is not the same as Blueberry Gelato, a separate cross that is usually lighter in THC and longer in flower. The names get swapped on menus constantly, so if you are trying to match a jar you liked, check the parents rather than the label.
Blue Gelato strain effects and experience
The first impression is clear and upbeat. Many people describe the opening as surprisingly clean-headed for an indica dominant strain: a happy, unhurried focus that suits cooking, a long phone call or an hour with a record. Over the next hour the Blueberry influence spreads into the body, bringing a calm, heavy-limbed comfort that grows stronger the later in the day you smoke it.
Phenotypes vary. Some plants lean closer to the energetic Gelato side, others closer to the sedating Blueberry side, which is why reviews range from clear-headed to sleepy. At 18% to 25% THC it is a confident mid-to-strong strain that most experienced smokers handle easily.
Blue Gelato flavour, aroma and appearance
Blueberry dominates, as the name promises, but it is a brighter blueberry than the old classic: think fresh berries with a squeeze of tangerine rather than a heavy jam. The Thin Mint ancestry adds a cool, minty lift on the exhale and the Sherbet side contributes a creamy, sweet base. Limonene and caryophyllene tend to lead the terpene profile, with pinene or ocimene adding the fresh, green edge some phenotypes show.
The buds are dense and medium to large, with lime and forest green calyxes that pick up blue and violet hues in a cool finish. Trichome coverage is heavy, giving the whole cola a silver sheen by week seven, and the pistils turn from cream to amber as harvest approaches.
Growing Blue Gelato in Canada
Indoors
This is a strain that rewards a full-size tent and a patient grower. From a four week veg it reaches 90 to 150 cm, with a stretch of roughly 1.5 to 2 times depending on phenotype. It handles a medium to heavy feed and responds well to strong lighting, but it dislikes stagnant air: the dense buds and thick foliage mean you need good oscillating fans and a dehumidifier in late bloom. Keep humidity at 40% to 45% from week six, day temperatures of 22 to 26 degrees, and nights a few degrees cooler for colour. Flower runs 63 to 70 days. The humidity guide explains how to set targets for each stage.
Outdoors, by region
A 9 to 10 week flower makes Blue Gelato a coastal BC and southern Ontario plant outdoors. On Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland, start indoors in April, plant out in late May and plan for harvest between the first and middle of October, ideally with a simple rain cover over the last two weeks. In southern Ontario, especially along Lake Erie and the Niagara Peninsula, a sunny site can finish it by early to mid October in a warm year. In Quebec, the Maritimes and the Prairies, outdoor success is unlikely before the autumn rains and frosts arrive; grow it indoors or in a heated greenhouse instead, which is exactly what a winter tent is for.
Height and training
Blue Gelato develops a strong main cola with plenty of side shoots. Topping twice and spreading the branches under a trellis net produces a flat, even canopy of ten to sixteen sites. Thin the interior growth before the flip and again at day 21 of flower; opening the plant up is the single best defence against bud rot on this strain.
Flowering and harvest cues
The calyxes keep swelling right to the end, so do not cut at week eight. Check trichomes from day 60 and harvest when they are mostly cloudy with 10% to 15% amber. Dry for 12 to 14 days at 58% to 60% humidity and around 18 degrees. The blueberry is volatile, and a warm, fast dry costs you most of it; a slow dry and a cure of three to four weeks gives the full berry and mint profile.
Blue Gelato yield indoors and outdoors
Blue Gelato is a generous plant. A trained indoor canopy gives 500 to 650 g/m², with skilled growers under high-output lighting reporting more. A full-season outdoor plant on the BC coast can produce 600 to 900 g dried. Few berry strains combine yield and flavour this well, and the heavy resin makes the trim worthwhile for dry sift or edibles.
Who Blue Gelato is for, and who should pick something else
Grow Blue Gelato if you want a big indoor harvest with real blueberry flavour, if you have the space and the patience for a ten week bloom, or if you are planning a winter tent run. It suits growers with a couple of harvests behind them and decent airflow control.
Pick something else if you garden outdoors on the Prairies or in the Atlantic provinces, if your tent is under 120 cm tall, or if you want a strain that finishes in eight weeks.
How Blue Gelato compares
Blueberry is the classic parent, smaller, sleepier and jammier. Gelato 41 is the closest Gelato number, with more gas and potency and less fruit. Sunset Sherbet and Girl Scout Cookies are the grandparents behind the cream and the mint. Among our indica dominant feminized seeds, Blue Gelato is the pick for blueberry lovers with a full-size tent.
Frequently asked questions about Blue Gelato
Is Blue Gelato the same as Blue Gelato 41?
Yes, Blue Gelato and Blue Gelato 41 are the same strain under two names. It is a three-way cross of Blueberry, Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies and Sunset Sherbet. It is different from Blueberry Gelato, which has separate parents and usually lower THC.
Is Blue Gelato indica or sativa?
Blue Gelato is an indica dominant hybrid, between 60% and 80% indica depending on the phenotype. The opening is clear and upbeat, and the body relaxation grows over the first hour. Plants grow like a medium to large hybrid with a strong main cola.
What does Blue Gelato taste like?
Blue Gelato tastes of fresh blueberries with a squeeze of tangerine, a cool mint note on the exhale and a creamy, sweet base. The blueberry comes from its Blueberry parent and the mint from Thin Mint Cookies. A slow, cool dry is essential to keep the berry flavour.
How long does Blue Gelato take to flower?
Blue Gelato flowers in 9 to 10 weeks, 63 to 70 days after the switch to 12/12. Outdoors in Canada it finishes in early to mid October, so it suits coastal BC and southern Ontario. Elsewhere it is best grown indoors or in a greenhouse.
