Dark Rainbow Feminized at a glance: Dark Rainbow is a balanced, slightly indica leaning cross of GMO and Rainbow Belts F1 that flowers in 9 to 10 weeks, tests 24% to 30% THC and yields 400 to 550 g/m² of dark, resinous buds that smell of pepper, funk and tropical candy.
A coastal October finish needs an April start, and an April start needs seeds in hand by March
Work backwards from the harvest and the calendar gets tight. Dark Rainbow wants to come down in early to mid October, which means a seedling under lights by mid April and a seed order no later than March. Because our stock already sits in Vancouver, BC, that order reaches Victoria, Toronto or Fredericton in 3 to 7 business days instead of weeks, with no customs inspection and no broker fee. Packs ship in plain envelopes, carry our 80% germination guarantee and, in the 10 and 25 seed sizes, come buy one get one free.
Where Dark Rainbow comes from
Dark Rainbow strain is a cross of GMO, the garlic-and-fuel indica sometimes sold as Garlic Cookies, and Rainbow Belts F1, a fruity Zkittlez and Moonbow descendant known for its candy nose. It appeared in the early 2020s from a breeding program known for pushing GMO into new directions, and quickly turned up on craft menus in the United States and later on Canadian legal shelves. Some sources list Rainbow Chip as the second parent instead; the GMO x Rainbow Belts F1 pairing is the most widely reported and is the one this page describes.
The name is a fair description of the plant. GMO lends dark, almost forest-green foliage and moody purple tones in cool weather, while Rainbow Belts adds bright fruit to the nose. A later release called Dark Rainbow 2.0 exists under a similar name; it is a separate line, so expect different numbers if you have grown it.
Dark Rainbow strain effects and experience
The first wave is cheerful. Many people describe a giggly, chatty lift in the first fifteen minutes, which comes from the Rainbow Belts side. As the session goes on, the GMO genetics slowly take over with a warm, heavy body feel and a calm, unhurried mood. It works best in the early evening with friends, a game night or a long meal, rather than as a wake-up strain.
Lab results for craft batches have landed in the upper 20s and occasionally past 30% THC, so Dark Rainbow is firmly a strain for experienced consumers. Small amounts go a long way. Common side effects are dry mouth and dry eyes, and too much can leave a person foggy and glued to the sofa.
Dark Rainbow flavour, aroma and appearance
This is a contrast strain. The first sniff is chemical and peppery with the savoury funk GMO is known for, and some GMO leaning plants add a whiff of garlic. Then the sweetness arrives: tropical fruit, lemon-lime candy and a hint of pear from the Rainbow Belts side. On the inhale the smoke is thick and spicy; on the exhale, sweet and fruity. Caryophyllene leads most terpene tests, usually with myrcene, limonene and humulene behind it, and the odd batch shows terpinolene.
Buds are medium sized and chunky, with deep olive calyxes that turn plum or near-black when nights drop below 15 degrees in late flower. Bright orange pistils and a heavy, greasy trichome coat finish the look. The darker the bud, the more people tend to reach for the jar.
Growing Dark Rainbow in Canada
Indoors
Veg for four to five weeks and flip at 35 to 45 cm. Expect a stretch of about 1.5 to 2 times, more on the GMO leaning plants. Keep temperatures at 24 to 27 degrees with lights on, and drop the night temperature to 16 to 18 degrees for the final two weeks if you want the dark colour to show. Humidity should fall to 40% to 45% from week six. Dark Rainbow feeds moderately; it appreciates extra calcium and magnesium under LED. Our guide to growing cannabis indoors in Canada covers lighting and ventilation for a room this pungent.
Outdoors, by region
With 9 to 10 weeks of flower, outdoor Dark Rainbow belongs on the BC coast and in the warmest pockets of southern Ontario. On Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Fraser Valley, harvest usually lands in the first half of October; a simple rain cover for the final fortnight protects the colas from autumn showers. Around Windsor, Leamington and the Niagara bench, a warm September brings it home by mid October. In Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, northern Ontario, most of Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, grow it indoors or in a heated greenhouse instead.
Height and training
Plants grow vigorously with a strong central cola. Top once at the fourth or fifth node, then train the branches into a flat screen. GMO leaning plants stretch hardest and benefit from supercropping in the first two weeks of flower. Defoliate lightly at the flip and again at day 21.
Flowering and harvest cues
Rainbow Belts leaning phenotypes often finish around day 60 to 63, while GMO leaning plants can need 70 days or slightly more. Wait for mostly cloudy trichomes with 10% to 15% amber. A slow 12 to 14 day dry at 60% humidity keeps the fruit notes from fading behind the funk.
Dark Rainbow yield indoors and outdoors
A well-trained indoor canopy returns 400 to 550 g/m². Outdoor plants on the coast in large containers or raised beds produce 450 to 650 g each in a good year. Resin production is high, and the trim makes flavourful hash or rosin with the same sweet and funky contrast as the flower.
Who Dark Rainbow is for, and who should pick something else
Choose Dark Rainbow feminized seeds if you like GMO but want a sweeter finish, if you enjoy hunting phenotypes in a ten pack, or if dark bud colour matters to you. It suits intermediate growers who can manage odour, humidity and a slightly longer bloom.
Look elsewhere if you want a clean, simple fruit flavour, a quick outdoor finish in a short-season region, or something mild for daytime. First-time growers will have an easier time with a shorter, less pungent hybrid.
How Dark Rainbow compares
GMO is the funk parent: heavier, slower and more garlic forward. Rainbow Belts is the candy parent, lighter in the body and fruitier from start to finish. Modified Grapes takes GMO toward grape instead of tropical fruit, and Garlic Breath shows what GMO does when paired with Mendo Breath. More balanced crosses are listed under our hybrid feminized seeds.
Frequently asked questions about Dark Rainbow
What is Dark Rainbow strain?
Dark Rainbow is a hybrid made by crossing GMO with Rainbow Belts F1. It tests 24% to 30% THC, flowers in 9 to 10 weeks and is known for a funky, peppery nose with a sweet tropical candy finish and dark purple to near-black buds in cool weather.
Is Dark Rainbow indica or sativa?

How strong is Dark Rainbow?
Dark Rainbow is very strong, with tests commonly between 24% and 30% THC. That places it well above the average strain on a Canadian legal menu, so newer consumers should start with a very small amount.
What does Dark Rainbow taste like?
Dark Rainbow tastes savoury and spicy first, with pepper and chemical funk, then sweet, with tropical fruit and lemon-lime candy on the exhale. GMO leaning plants can add a hint of garlic, while Rainbow Belts leaning plants are fruitier.
