E85 Feminized at a glance: E85 is a roughly 60/40 indica leaning hybrid that flowers in 8 to 10 weeks, tests 25% to 30% THC and gives 400 to 550 g/m² of tight, sugar-coated buds that smell of lemon candy, apricot and pump-station gas.
Loud gas on the inside, a plain envelope on the outside
E85 is one of the smelliest strains we carry, so the way it reaches you matters. The seeds ship from our Vancouver, BC seed bank in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the label to suggest what is inside, and they arrive at addresses from Kamloops to Charlottetown in 3 to 7 business days without passing through customs. Every lot is germination tested in Vancouver and protected by our 80% germination guarantee, and the 10 and 25 seed packs are buy one get one free.
Where E85 comes from
E85 strain was bred on the American West Coast by crossing Wedding Cake, the creamy, vanilla-sweet Triangle Kush and Animal Mints hybrid, with Project 4516, a gas-forward selection whose full pedigree has never been published. It reached dispensary shelves in the early 2020s and built a following among people who want their gas strains to taste of something besides fuel. A few menus list different parents for E85, including a lemon cherry and candy cross, which usually means a different cut wearing the same name; the plant we sell is the Wedding Cake x Project 4516 line.
The name is the fuel pump label for gasoline blended with 85% ethanol. It is a nod to the high-octane aroma and the strength of the effect, and it fits a family of strains named after fuels, from Jet Fuel to Diesel. Genetically E85 leans indica at about 60/40, and in the tent it grows like Wedding Cake: stocky, with short internodes and heavy side branching.
E85 strain effects and experience
E85 hits quickly. Within a few minutes there is a strong wave of pressure behind the eyes and a happy, slightly giddy mood. That opening hour stays social and talkative for most people, then a deep body ease arrives and lingers, along with the appetite that the Wedding Cake side is known for. By the second hour it is a sit-down, watch-a-film strain rather than a go-for-a-walk strain.
At 25% to 30% THC, E85 belongs with the strongest flower on the market. Experienced users will appreciate it; newcomers should start with a single small puff.
E85 flavour, aroma and appearance
Open a jar and the first note is sweet: lemon drop, dried apricot and a little vanilla cake from Wedding Cake. Within seconds the gas rolls over it, sharp and solvent-like, with pine and damp earth underneath. On the inhale the sweetness leads; on the exhale the fuel takes over and lingers on the tongue. Dispensary terpene panels commonly show limonene, caryophyllene and humulene at the top, which lines up with the lemon, pepper and woody notes.
The buds are medium sized, golf-ball dense and lime green, with a heavy white trichome coat and fiery orange pistils. Some phenotypes show violet tips on the sugar leaves in a cool finish, but colour is a bonus here, not the main event.
Growing E85 in Canada
Indoors
Expect a squat, bushy plant that stretches only 1.3 to 1.5 times after the flip. Four to five weeks of veg gives a finished height of 80 to 130 cm, which is comfortable for a 150 cm tent. Run the room at 22 to 27 degrees and keep relative humidity near 50% through mid bloom, dropping toward 42% in the last three weeks. E85 takes a medium to heavy feed and responds well to extra phosphorus and potassium from week four of flower. Plan for odour from day one: by week five the gas carries through doors and vents, and our guide to controlling cannabis smell covers filters and airflow for apartments and shared homes.
Outdoors, by region
With 58 to 68 days of bloom, E85 straddles the line between a coastal plant and a nationwide one. In the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island and in the warmer Okanagan valleys, plant out in late May and harvest from late September to early October. Southern Ontario and the Montreal plain can also bring it in during the first half of October if the phenotype finishes on the early side. On the Prairies, start seeds under lights in early April, move the plants out in late May, and keep a frost cloth handy, because the slower phenotypes may need a greenhouse to finish safely. In Atlantic Canada, a greenhouse is the dependable route.
Height and training
The Wedding Cake structure is dense, so opening it up is most of the work. Top once or twice in veg, spread the branches with low stress training and fill a single net. Defoliate lightly before the flip and again at day 21 so the inner bud sites get light. Because the plant stays short, it fits a sea of green with several small plants in place of one large one.
Flowering and harvest cues
Most E85 plants finish between day 58 and day 65, with occasional cuts stretching to 68. Pistils darken early, so rely on trichomes: harvest when the heads are mostly cloudy with 10% to 20% amber for the fullest gas and body effect. Dry whole branches cool and slow, about 12 days at 60% humidity, and give the jars at least two weeks. The lemon and apricot top notes fade if the dry room is too warm, while the gas survives almost anything.
E85 yield indoors and outdoors
Indoors, expect 400 to 550 g/m² from a well trained canopy, with very little shrink on drying thanks to the density. Outdoors in a long coastal season, a single plant in a large container yields 450 to 750 g dried. E85 is not a record breaker for weight, but its resin heads press well, so rosin makers get a strong return from flower and fresh frozen material alike. Our yield per plant guide explains how to predict your own harvest.
Who E85 is for, and who should pick something else
E85 is for people who rank smell and strength above everything else, who already know how to handle a 25% plus strain, and who have good odour control. It also suits growers with limited headroom, because it stays short.
If you need discretion and do not have a carbon filter, if you prefer an uplifting daytime high, or if you are brand new to growing, a milder dessert hybrid is a better place to start.
How E85 compares
Next to Wedding Cake, E85 keeps the sweet cake and appetite but adds a hard gasoline finish and a few points of potency. Compared with Jet Fuel, a sativa leaning fuel strain, E85 is heavier, sweeter and more of an evening choice. Among our indica leaning feminized seeds it is one of the loudest, and Permanent Marker is the closest alternative if you want similar strength with more candy and less fuel.
Frequently asked questions about E85
Why is it called E85 strain?
E85 is named after the fuel blend of 85% ethanol and gasoline sold at North American pumps. The name points to its sharp, gassy aroma and its high potency. Sweet lemon and cake notes come first, but the fuel finish is what most people remember.
What are the parents of E85?
E85 is generally listed as Wedding Cake crossed with Project 4516. Wedding Cake brings the sweet, creamy side and the compact plant, while Project 4516 adds the gas. A few menus list other parents, which usually means a different cut sold under the same name.
How strong is E85 weed?
E85 typically tests between 25% and 30% THC, with very little CBD. It is one of the stronger strains available, with a fast onset and a heavy, relaxing finish, so experienced users get the most out of it and beginners should take very small amounts.
Is E85 an indica or sativa?
E85 is an indica leaning hybrid, roughly 60% indica and 40% sativa. It starts with a happy, talkative lift and moves into deep body relaxation and a strong appetite, which makes it most popular for evenings.
