Wedding Cake came out of California in the mid 2010s and spread fast on the strength of its flavour and frost. The most reliable account traces it to a selection from a Triangle Kush and Animal Mints cross, sometimes called Triangle Mints #23. Many seed pages still give its parents as Cherry Pie and Girl Scout Cookies, a pairing that some researchers think belongs to the similar sounding Birthday Cake and was attached to Wedding Cake in early online databases. Either way, it sits firmly in the Cookies extended family.
The alternate name, Pink Cookies, is widely used, including by some Canadian retailers, and both names refer to the same plant. In 2019 a major online strain database named it strain of the year, which cemented its place on dispensary shelves and in home gardens.
Wedding Cake and Birthday Cake are often mixed up, so it helps to know the difference. Birthday Cake, sometimes called Birthday Cake Kush, is usually described as Girl Scout Cookies crossed with Cherry Pie, and it tastes sweeter and more like plain vanilla sponge. Wedding Cake has more tang and pepper, a denser bud and a heavier finish. If a jar smells sharply sour under the vanilla, it is almost certainly Wedding Cake.
Wedding Cake starts with a short, cheerful head lift: a bit of euphoria, a brighter mood and an easy laugh. Wedding Cake is a manageable indoor plant. Veg for four weeks, flip at 40 to 50 cm and expect it to finish between 80 and 120 cm. It prefers 22 to 26 degrees and a steady, moderate feed. The buds are tight and resinous, so from week five of flower hold humidity at 45% or lower and keep air moving through the canopy. Most phenotypes finish in 60 to 65 days; some stretch to 70.
With an 8 to 10 week bloom and a preference for a dry finish, Wedding Cake suits the BC coast, the Okanagan and southern Ontario outdoors, with a harvest in early to mid October. A rain cover for the final two weeks is worth the effort on the coast. Top once and spread the branches with low stress training to create an even canopy of eight to ten colas. Wedding Cake stretches modestly, so a single net is usually enough. Remove lower growth at the flip to keep airflow around the dense buds and focus energy on the tops.
Watch the trichomes rather than the pistils. Harvest when most heads are cloudy with a few amber for a balanced effect, or wait for 15% amber for a heavier evening. Dry for 10 to 14 days at 60% humidity and cure for at least two weeks; the vanilla sweetness comes forward in the jar.
Indoors, a trained plant produces 450 to 600 g/m². Outdoors, a full-season plant in a warm, dry spot gives 500 to 800 g dried. The buds are dense and lose little weight in drying, so what you see at harvest is close to what ends up in the jar.
