Where Animal Mints comes from

Animal Mints is a cross of Animal Cookies and SinMint Cookies. Animal Cookies, a Girl Scout Cookies and Fire OG hybrid, brings the potency, the dense structure and a sweet, earthy dough flavour. SinMint Cookies adds the cool mint note that gives the strain its name, along with extra resin. Some accounts also list Blue Power in the background of the SinMint side, which may account for the occasional purple phenotype. The strain appeared in California in the late 2010s and gained quick popularity with breeders.

Much of its importance today comes from its offspring. Crossing Animal Mints with Bubba Kush created Kush Mints, and the mint line then spread into Gush Mints, Georgia Pie, Cap Junky and many others. The first twenty minutes are clear and upbeat, with a noticeable mood lift and a light, focused head. Then the indica side takes over. A heavy, warm relaxation spreads through the shoulders and legs and holds for two hours or more, and later in the session it often ends in sleep. It is an evening strain by nature.

Potency sits between 22% and 30% THC, which is at the high end of the Cookies family. Experienced users tend to rate it as strong but smooth; newer users should start with a very small amount.

Indoors

Animal Mints stays short, so it suits tents as low as 150 cm. A four week veg and a flip at 40 to 50 cm give a finished height of 80 to 120 cm after a stretch of about 1.4 times. It dislikes heavy feeding: the Cookies side shows burnt tips and clawing leaves quickly, so run it at half to two thirds strength and increase slowly. Keep day temperatures at 22 to 26 degrees and humidity below 45% from week five, because the buds are dense enough to trap moisture in the centre. Most plants finish in 60 to 65 days; the slowest take 70.

Outdoors, by region

Outdoors, Animal Mints needs a warm and dry early autumn. The Okanagan and Similkameen valleys in BC’s interior are ideal, with dry Septembers that let the dense buds finish without rot in late September to early October. The south coast of BC and southern Ontario can grow it too, but a rain cover for the last three weeks is strongly advised, and spacing plants wide helps them dry after showers. In Quebec, the Maritimes and on the Prairies, the combination of a later finish and dense buds makes a greenhouse or indoor grow the more reliable choice. Height and training

Because it is compact, Animal Mints does best with a wide, flat canopy. Top once, then use low stress training to spread six to eight main branches under a net. Remove small interior shoots at the start of flower and lightly defoliate at day 21 so light reaches the lower tops and air moves through the dense middle. A small oscillating fan at canopy height makes a clear difference.

Flowering and harvest cues

Buds harden and the trichomes turn milky from about day 55. Harvest at mostly cloudy with 10% to 15% amber for the full, relaxing effect, usually between day 60 and day 67. Check the centre of the largest buds for mould before cutting, because that is where problems start. Dry slowly for 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity and cure for three weeks; the mint note needs time to come forward.

Animal Mints yield indoors and outdoors

Indoors, a trained canopy returns 400 to 500 g/m² of very dense buds that lose little weight when dried. Outdoors in a dry interior BC season, plants in 50 to 80 litre pots yield 400 to 600 g each.
