Where Gush Mints comes from

Gush Mints is a layered cross. Kush Mints supplies the minty, gassy backbone and a short, sturdy kush frame. Gushers, itself a Gelato 41 and Triangle Kush child, adds the tropical fruit sweetness and heavy frost. F1 Durb, a Durban Poison descendant, is the wild card; it lifts the effect and adds an anise and herbal edge to the terpene mix. The strain came out of California in the early 2020s and quickly became a staple for growers who wanted candy flavour without giving up potency.

In the garden it mostly behaves like its Kush Mints side: compact, broad-leaved and resinous. The Durban influence shows as slightly longer internodes and a sharper, more awake high than you might expect from the look of the plant.

Gush Mints strain effects and experience

Gush Mints begins with a lively, bright head change that owes a lot to the Durban line. For the first forty minutes or so it feels social and a bit giggly. Then it turns, and the Kush Mints and Gushers weight arrives as a deep, heavy calm through the body, with a strong pull toward the couch and, later, sleep. It is best kept for evenings when nothing else needs doing.

At 22% to 28% THC this is a potent strain, and the late heaviness can catch people off guard. Take it slowly and give each draw time to land.

Gush Mints flavour, aroma and appearance

The jar opens with sweet fruit candy, like the chewy snacks it is named after, then fresh spearmint and a sharp diesel note underneath. Break a bud and a herbal, faintly liquorice tone comes through from the Durban side. The smoke is sweet and cool on the inhale and finishes with mint, gas and a touch of cream. Caryophyllene, limonene and linalool usually lead, supported by myrcene.

The buds are tight, rounded nuggets, bright green with lavender tips in a cool room, and so covered in trichomes that they look pale from a distance. Pistils are short and orange. Density is high, which matters when you plan the dry.

Growing Gush Mints in Canada

Indoors

This is where Gush Mints belongs. Veg for four to five weeks, flip at 45 to 50 cm and expect a 1.5 times stretch to a final 80 to 120 cm, which suits a 120 cm or 150 cm tent. Hold 23 to 26 degrees during lights on and keep the night within five degrees. A medium feed with a little extra potassium from week four of bloom helps the buds swell. The candy and mint scent gets loud from week five, so size a carbon filter for your tent; our guide to controlling cannabis smell explains how. Count on 63 to 70 days of flower, and do not rush it.

Outdoors, by region

An early to mid October harvest limits Gush Mints outdoors to coastal BC and the warmest pocket of southern Ontario. On Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Lower Mainland, start indoors in April, plant out after the last frost and put a greenhouse or rain cover over the plant from mid September; tight, sugary buds and west coast rain are a risky combination. In southern Ontario, the Lake Erie shoreline and the Niagara Peninsula can carry it to the finish in a dry fall. Everywhere else, from the Prairies to Newfoundland, grow it indoors or in a heated greenhouse, where its compact size is an advantage rather than a limit.

Height and training

Because it stays short, focus on width. Top at the fifth node and again on the two new leaders to make four main colas, then spread them with low stress training. A sea of green with four small plants in a 120 cm tent also works well, since the internodes are tight. Remove fan leaves shading bud sites at day 21 of bloom and lightly again around day 45.

Flowering and harvest cues

Resin builds from week three and the calyxes swell sharply after day 50. Harvest when the trichomes are mostly cloudy with 10% to 20% amber, usually between day 65 and 70. Pulled too early, Gush Mints tastes thin and grassy, so let it go the distance. Dry for 12 to 14 days at 60% humidity and around 18 degrees, then cure for at least three weeks.

Gush Mints yield indoors and outdoors

Expect 400 to 500 g/m² indoors from a trained, well lit canopy. The rare outdoor plant on the BC coast or in southern Ontario returns 400 to 600 g when October stays dry. The buds are dense and heavy for their size, and the resin gives an excellent return for hash or rosin, which is part of why so many Gush Mints crops end up pressed.

Who Gush Mints is for, and who should pick something else

Choose Gush Mints if you grow indoors, love sweet and minty flavours, and want an evening strain that starts social and ends heavy. It suits growers who can manage humidity and are patient enough to wait for day 65 or later.

Pick something else if you want an outdoor plant for most of Canada, where Kush Mints finishes weeks earlier and handles the cold better, or if you want a daytime strain, where Durban Poison keeps the energy and drops the weight.

How Gush Mints compares

Gushers, one of its parents, is fruitier and sweeter with no mint. Kush Mints is the sturdier, more cold tolerant plant with a coffee and vanilla tone. Across our indica feminized seeds, Gush Mints is the pick for growers who want candy flavour with a genuinely heavy finish.

Questions about Gush Mints

01What is Gush Mints a cross of?

Gush Mints is a three-way cross of Kush Mints, F1 Durb and Gushers. Kush Mints gives it the mint and structure, Gushers the fruit candy sweetness, and F1 Durb, a Durban Poison descendant, a brighter onset and a herbal edge.

02What does Gush Mints taste like?

It tastes of sweet fruit candy and fresh mint, with diesel underneath and a creamy finish. Some phenotypes add a faint liquorice or herbal note from the Durban line. The flavour is strongest after a three week cure.

03Is Gush Mints strong?

Yes. Gush Mints tests from 22% to 28% THC. The effect opens bright and social and then becomes heavy and sedating in the body, so it is best saved for evenings and approached slowly by occasional consumers.

04Can I grow Gush Mints outside in Canada?

Only in the mildest spots. It flowers for 9 to 10 weeks and finishes in early to mid October, which is realistic on the BC coast and in the warmest parts of southern Ontario with rain protection. In the rest of Canada it is an indoor strain.
